Sabrina Alvarez is pretty much a nobody—until she lands the starring role in the big budget film based on the Kettle Springs Massacre. Sabrina knows she should be on top of the world. She’s going to be THE Quinn Maybrook, Final Girl of Final Girls, national hero and certified badass. But as soon as Sabrina gets to Kettle Springs, she just can’t quite shake the feeling that something’s off. A spate of deaths, an out-of-control director, a town decimated by loss and divided by anger, and a movie designed to glorify it all. Something bad is brewing, and this time, it’s all on film.
Short and Sweet Review
We’re back in Kettle Springs, but this time we aren’t following Quinn. Instead, we get to watch her story come to life on the big screen. Sabrina Alvarez lands the starring role as Quinn Maybrook in the movie about the Kettle Springs Massacre, and she is determined to prove that she has what it takes to play the ultimate Final Girl. Honestly, I thought that was such a fun setup, especially knowing that Kettle Springs is not exactly the safest place to be.
When I read the previous book in the series, I honestly thought that was going to be the last time we visited this world, so I was really happy to be wrong. The author even mentioned in the acknowledgments that there were clues throughout the previous book hinting that the story wasn’t over, and after going back and looking for them, I can definitely see it now. I really enjoyed Sabrina as our new main character. She’s smart, determined, and takes the role seriously because she wants to channel Quinn and become the badass Final Girl she’s playing. I thought that made her a really strong addition to the series, and I liked watching her figure out that something isn’t quite right in Kettle Springs while everyone around her is trying to make a movie about one of the town’s darkest moments. The premise itself was probably my favorite part. We’re watching a movie about the Kettle Springs Massacre being filmed in the actual town where everything happened, while strange things start happening behind the scenes. Between the out of control director, the divided town, the deaths, and the movie itself, there was so much going on that I was invested in seeing how everything would play out. I also really liked getting different POVs throughout the story. It gave us a chance to see what was happening from different perspectives and made the story feel bigger than just Sabrina’s experience. It was also fun seeing some familiar characters like Cole and Rust again. Those little connections to the previous books made returning to Kettle Springs feel even more worthwhile. And of course, we can’t talk about this series without talking about Frendo. At this point, it really does feel like Frendo is never truly gone, and I honestly don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye to this world. I wouldn’t be mad at all if we got another installment, although I also think this could work as a stopping point for the series.
Overall, Lights! Camera! Frendo! was such a fun return to Kettle Springs. I loved the movie within the story setup, Sabrina was a great new Final Girl, and it was nice getting to revisit some familiar characters and see how the events of the previous books continued to affect this world. It kept me invested from beginning to end, and with spooky season right around the corner, this was a perfect time to revisit Kettle Springs. If you’ve read the other books in the series and enjoyed them, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up.
