Nothing will stop Madeline Moore from taking over her family’s independent bookstore after college. Nothing, that is—until a chain bookstore called Prologue opens across the street and threatens to shut them down.
Madeline sets out to demolish the competition, but the guy who works over at Prologue seems intent on ruining her life. Not only is he taking her customers, he has the unbelievable audacity to be… extremely cute.
But that doesn’t matter. Jasper is the enemy and he will be destroyed. After all—all’s fair in love and (book) war.
Short and Sweet Review
Madeline wants to take over her family’s bookstore after college, but she learns that her dreams may not come true after a chain bookstore across the street, Prologue opens and threatens to shut them down. Madeline is determined to take them down but Jasper over at Prologue seems to have the same idea by stealing customers and he has the audacity to be cute.
Madeline loves her family’s bookstore Books and Moore so when her aunt Astrid shares the news that bookstore is going to close Madeline feels like her world is falling apart. Madeline starts coming up with ideas to make more money to try to keep the bookstore open. I liked all of Madeline’s fundraising ideas from getting food trucks, pastries, an author to come by, her friend to make a YouTube video, and a go fund me.
We also see that Madeline’s mom comes back in her life and how that relationship affects things. Madeline and her brother Benny were raised by their aunt Astrid and Benny’s dad Sterling so to have their mom come back was an adjustment and there was a lot of tension.
The rivalry and romance between Madeline and Jasper was an interesting one to say the least. The two were in a prank war and would try to take customers from each others stores and at one point we see things go too far. When things go too far that’s when these two decide to get into a sort of relationship? I’m not even sure I should call it a relationship but whatever it was I didn’t really like it. I felt like they didn’t really have chemistry they had more of a hookup vibe going on and they didn’t really spend much time in the romance phase.
This book was okay I was all for saving the bookstore but towards the end of the book I found myself getting annoyed with Madeline. I loved that she wanted to save the bookstore but she just wouldn’t look at things realistically like everyone else would and it was annoying and so were her outbursts. Overall it just fell short of my expectations.
