When a runaway teen is arrested for shoplifting, he's desperate not to be sent back to the hyper-religious parents he knows will never accept him. While at the police station, he notices a resemblance to the aged-up photos of Nate Beaumont, a child who went missing ten years ago—and, in a moment of desperation, he takes Nate’s identity in hopes that it will help him make a quick getaway.

Before he can run again, Nate’s family arrives and welcomes him home to a life he never had. As "Nate" watches and waits for his chance to escape, he finds that the Beaumonts are nurturing and loving, very different from his own parents.

But soon unsettling things start to happen—vandalism, alarms going off in the middle of the night—and it becomes clear that someone knows "Nate" isn't who he says he is...and that the real Nate wasn't kidnapped, but murdered.

As he starts to unravel the mystery, he gets ever closer to the devil he may know—and learns he might be their next victim.

Short and Sweet Review

When a teen comes home and learns that his family wants to send him to a conversion, he decides the best thing for him is to runaway. He’s been on the run for eight months and when he gets caught shoplifting he’s taken to the police station. He sees a picture of a kid that went missing ten years ago and the age progression picture looks just like him so he decides to tell the cops he’s Nate. The only problem is Nate’s family comes to pick him up and now he has to keep up this charade. Nate’s parents are a lot better than his and although he has a plan to run away life with the Beaumont family isn’t too bad, but weird things are starting to happen and he has the feeling someone knows he isn’t Nate.

This book will immediately have you hooked, we learn a little background about out main character and how he got to where he is now. When Nate goes back to the Beaumonts home he realizes that this charade is going to have to be a little longer then he planned for, but he gets away with most things by saying he has amnesia. The Beaumont family consists of the parents Marcus and Valencia and their other son Easton. Valencia is the one who is most willing to accept that this is Nate, while Marcus and Easton are more hesitant. Nate meets Miles who was Nates childhood friend he has a podcast and he immediately clocks Nate for who he is an imposter. Miles lets Nate know he’ll help him escape if Nate can get some inside dirt on the Beaumonts, because Miles thinks someone in the family murdered their son. I was on the edge of my seat after Miles let that thought out, but we still have a lot of suspects and we have to figure out what happened ten years ago. While Nate is living somewhat comfortably strange accidents begin to happen at the house and Nate knows his jig may be up sooner than later. I was worried about Nate, there was obviously something strange going on and I didn’t want him to end up facing the same fate as the original Nate. I do think towards the end when we find out what happened, it wasn’t my favorite reveal but I will say it did make sense. I was glad that the mystery of what happened to the original Nate was solved and we weren’t left with questions. I did like the ending and I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll leave it at that

Overall, this was a great book. From the very beginning you’ll be glued to the pages trying to figure out what happened to the original Nate and if our new one will make it out alive. Definitely add this book to your TBR!

Short and Sweet Review Didn’t Do It had a premise that immediately grabbed my attention. The idea of a girl living under the shadow of her father’s crimes and then becoming trapped in a deadly cabin getaway sounded like the perfect setup for a tense YA thriller. I also liked how the story explored the way […]

TO DROWN A WITCH By Lindsey Olsson

Short and Sweet Review To Drown a Witch had a really intriguing premise that immediately caught my attention. The mystery surrounding the Witch’s identity, combined […]

BEWARE THE ABBOTT BOYS By Chelsea Ichaso

Short and Sweet Review Beware the Abbott Boys had all the ingredients for a mystery I should have loved: a suspicious family, a small town full of secrets, a dead girl, and a second murder that throws everyone into chaos. The premise hooked me immediately, and the opening chapters did a great job creating an […]
