Violet Lopez has planned exactly how her life will go: She’ll graduate valedictorian, attend Harvard, and become a big shot lawyer, all so that her injury-prone single dad can finally take a break.
As a member of her elite private school’s law society, Violet is proud to hold a near-perfect record of defending students against the disciplinary board. But when the popular and infuriatingly charming Theo Hudson is accused of a prank he swears he didn’t commit, Violet recuses herself from his case on the grounds of despising the school’s privileged golden boy, and not even a couple classmates’ offer of a four-figure payout to purposely tank his trial can change her mind.
Then Theo uncovers a secret Violet wants to keep under wraps and blackmails her into representing him. Sick of being pushed around by rich kids, Violet decides she can get sweet revenge on the arrogant jock and some much-needed cash at the same time. She’ll twist his alibi, lose key evidence, mislead witnesses—all while playing the perfect lawyer on the surface. Theo goes down, and Violet gets paid.
But the closer Violet gets to Theo, the more she sees beneath his devil-may-care attitude to someone caring and surprisingly sensitive…who she’s been planning to sabotage. Is it too late to change her mind? And even if she does, would Theo ever forgive her?
Violet can object to falling in love all she wants, but her heart overrules every time.
Short and Sweet Review
Violet Lopez has her future all planned out. She’s going to graduate valedictorian, get into Harvard, and become a successful lawyer so she can give her injury-prone single dad a chance to finally relax. As a member of her school’s law society, she’s proud of her record defending students against the disciplinary board, but things get complicated when Theo Hudson, the charming golden boy she can’t stand, is accused of a prank he claims he didn’t commit. After Violet refuses to take his case, Theo discovers a secret that gives him the perfect opportunity to force her into representing him. Violet decides to use the situation to her advantage, accepting money to sabotage his defense. The problem? The more time she spends with Theo, the harder it becomes to go through with her plan.
I really enjoyed Violet as a main character. She’s ambitious, hardworking, and determined to build a better future for herself and her dad, but she’s also putting so much pressure on herself to be perfect that she barely gives herself room to breathe. I could understand why she was so focused on school and her future, especially with everything she’s trying to accomplish, even when her need for control leads her to make some questionable decisions. I also loved seeing how much her relationship with her dad mattered to her. Their bond added a sweet emotional element to the story and helped explain why Violet feels like she has to do everything herself.
Theo was such a fun love interest! I expected him to be the typical rich, popular guy who gets away with everything, but there’s so much more to him than that. He’s genuinely kind, thoughtful, and caring, and I loved how he slowly challenged Violet’s assumptions about him. Their relationship felt natural, and I enjoyed watching Violet realize that maybe the person she’d already decided to dislike wasn’t who she thought he was. The romance was sweet without taking over the entire story, and I especially liked that Violet still had her own goals and responsibilities outside of her relationship with Theo.
The courtroom storyline was another highlight for me. I loved the idea of students defending their classmates, and it gave the book something extra beyond the usual high school romance. The cases were entertaining, and I liked seeing Violet’s passion for the law come through in the way she approached them. The biggest issue for me was Violet’s decision to go along with the plan to sabotage Theo. I understood why the money was tempting, but she continued with it even as her feelings changed, and there were times when I wanted her to come clean sooner. It made it harder to root for her, especially because Theo genuinely cared about her. I also wish we’d gotten a little more courtroom drama because that part of the story was so much fun.
Overall, Legally Yours, Violet Lopez was a sweet and entertaining YA romance with a great balance of relationships, family, academics, and courtroom drama. I loved Violet and Theo’s dynamic, the father-daughter relationship, and seeing Violet learn that she doesn’t have to be perfect to build the future she wants. While I got frustrated with some of her choices, the ending was satisfying, and I really enjoyed how everything came together. If you love Legally Blonde, academic overachievers, sweet romances, supportive friendships, and a little courtroom drama mixed into your YA contemporary reads, definitely give this one a try!
