After receiving a strange summons, eighteen-year-old nursing student Molly O’Rinn finds herself the private live-in nurse for a wealthy young man in his haunting Hudson Valley mansion. But after arriving at his secluded estate, Molly discovers that her handsome employer is not what he seems, and most surprising of all is what rests deep inside the mansion’s walls.

Perhaps not what, but who…

A young man about Molly’s age—at least in appearance—is a prisoner of the estate, locked behind magical barriers. Nin is royalty, the son of a legend. He is not human, not of this world…and not like anyone Molly has ever met.

Molly should stay away from him. But Nin is a terrifying yet strangely attractive being, and soon both Molly and Nin find themselves drawn to each other, sparked by a connection neither of them can deny. But as the two become entangled in a forbidden affair, outside forces start to press in.

Because Nin’s legendary father is looking for his son, and he’s not the only one.

To keep Molly safe, Nin must find a way back to his realm or suffer the consequences. Even if it means choosing his princely duty over love.

Short and Sweet Review

Molly is a nursing student and she’s doing pretty well. When a stranger calls upon Molly to become his live in nurse, Molly has no choice but to accept this new position. When Molly arrives at the secluded mansion she doesn’t immediately meet her new employer Voss, but has more interactions with the other servants in the home. Molly does some exploring and finds someone chained up in the basement and it turns out he’s the Prince of Mourning Nin. He was tricked and now he’s trapped and he needs Molly’s help to escape.

This was an interesting book. Our main character Molly is able to see ghosts and she doesn’t know why but every time someone has died she has seen Nin. When she encounters him at the mansion she’s shocked but she wants to know more and quickly learns that there’s a lot of dangerous secrets lurking around that place. Her new employer Voss is sick which is why Molly was called there in the first place but he has a very sinister demeanor about him and just his presence and conversations with Molly were off putting. When Molly finds Nin and learns more about his entrapment she decides to help him and by doing that she puts herself in danger. I liked all of the characters and the story line, I’m interested in learning more about the others in The House of Death family. I do think at some points the book does get confusing but I’m hoping there will be more answers in the next book.

Overall, this was a good read. The ending felt a bit rushed but it did leave off getting us excited for what’s to come. I would recommend this book for anyone who’s looking for a mystery with a darker tone.

The idea of a girl living under the shadow of her father’s crimes and then becoming trapped in a deadly cabin getaway sounded like the perfect setup for a tense YA thriller. I also liked how the story explored the way […]

TO DROWN A WITCH By Lindsey Olsson

Short and Sweet Review To Drown a Witch had a really intriguing premise that immediately caught my attention. The idea of there being only one true Witch in each generation, hunted by an entire kingdom while everyone else relies on stolen magic, felt fresh and full of potential. The mystery surrounding the Witch’s identity, combined […]

BEWARE THE ABBOTT BOYS By Chelsea Ichaso

Short and Sweet Review Beware the Abbott Boys had all the ingredients for a mystery I should have loved: a suspicious family, a small town full of secrets, a dead girl, and a second murder that throws everyone into chaos. The premise hooked me immediately, and the opening chapters did a great job creating an […]
