Hannah is having an incredible spring break. A week at a resort in Mexico with her best friend Emmy and her family is perfect for de-stressing from senior year, even if it's awkward being around Emmy's older brother, Jackson, who she's had a crush on for as long as she can remember.

Still, the beach is gorgeous. So is the guy they meet in the surf. Except Hannah is now the third wheel in Emmy's vacation romance.

Eager to impress Emmy, her wealthy new boyfriend charters a private sailboat to make the most of their last day in paradise, and Hannah and Jackson are invited along. As the clouds roll in and the skies darken, their boat is the only one leaving the marina. And the further they get into open water, the more unsettled Hannah becomes. A storm is brewing onboard that's as deadly as the one racing toward them. Forget surviving graduation. Who will make it back to land alive?

Short and Sweet Review

Hannah and her best friend Emmy are in Mexico for Spring break. It’s their senior year and both of them just need this week to relax and hangout before they eventually go their separate ways before college. Emmy’s family is also on this vacation and it’s a bit awkward because Hannah has a crush on Emmy’s brother Jackson, but Hannah is trying to avert her gaze and focus on the beautiful scenery and spending time with her bestie. When Emmy meets a guy on the beach, Hannah becomes the third wheel. What’s worse is when he invites Emmy on his private sailboat but she isn’t going without Hannah and Emmy’s parents won’t let the girls go unless Jackson also goes. Now this group of four is out and the skies aren’t so beautiful anymore, a storm is coming and not everyone is going to make it out alive.

When I read the synopsis for this book I was like hmm okay seems like a solid premise not something that hasn’t been done before, but I was hoping it would be executed well enough that I wouldn’t mind that it would be predictable. These four get on the boat and I forgot to mention the guy from the beach, his name is Ben. If you watch enough documentaries and crime shows then you will immediately clock ben for the crazy person is. When they get on the boat he starts making some questionable choices and Hannah and Jackson call him out because they don’t want to die but for whatever reason Emmy is sticking by his side. So there’s a lot of tension between Hannah and Emmy because why would you trust this stranger over your best friend of years? We also have the issue of Hannah and Emmy and their after high school plans where Hannah thinks everything is hunky dory but Emmy actually has some feelings she hasn’t expressed. Also Hannah and Jackson, I didn’t really care about them but they’re on a small sailboat and there’s no better time to express their feelings for each other. The sailboat is without a captain the storm is getting closer and it eventually hits and there’s only a few survivors. I don’t want to spoil the end of the book but it was okay I think that’s the only redeeming part of this book. I couldn’t stand Emmy and her making excuses for Ben I thought she was annoying I didn’t like how much energy Hannah spent on being mad at Emmy for defending Ben, and Jackson is just there.

Overall, I couldn’t wait for this book to be over. I really had to push myself to finish it and the only thing that helped was reminding myself that this book was on the shorter side. I didn’t connect with either character and you would think in a life or death situation we would be a little smarter about the decisions we’re making but that was a no. I personally didn’t enjoy this book but I could see how some people would enjoy it.
