WATCH YOUR BACK

I'M COMING FOR YOU

Lylah and her friends can't wait to spend a night out together. Partying is the perfect way to let loose from the stress of life and school, and Lylah hopes that hitting the dance floor with Chace, her best friend, will bring them closer together. She's been crushing on him since they met. If only he thought of her the same way…

The girls are touching up their makeup and the guys are sliding on their coats when the doorbell rings. No one is there. An envelope sits on the doormat. It's an anonymous note addressed to their friend Sonny. A secret admirer? Maybe. They all laugh it off.

Except Sonny never comes home. And a new note arrives:

YOUR TURN

Short and Sweet Review

Lylah and her friends love to party, but one night when getting ready the doorbell rings and an envelope is left on the doorstep and then one of her roommates ends up missing. The notes keep coming and more of Lylah’s friends are put in danger.

This book was one of those books that makes you wonder if the main character has brain cells. Lylah’s friends are going missing but her and her roomies that are still alive think it’s smart to sneak away from their security detail just to get some alone time. The culprit in this book is cutting out peoples hearts and it’s just a bad plot used from an episode of Criminal Minds. Also Lylah isn’t a Nancy Drew, her and her friends pick one person they think can do it and decide to blame that person for everything and of course they end up being wrong. Anyway the actual culprit was off their rocker and had some real dependency issues going on. While Lylah’s friends are being slaughtered like pigs she’s out and about thinking about her crush Chace and trying to get closer to him because she’s had a crush on him for like ever.

Overall, not a good book. I read most of Prestons books and I don’t love them but I’m always hopeful that one of them will be good enough for me to change my mind and this book just tilted the seesaw to the no don’t read anything else by this author! Anyway, this is like a bad horror movie where the characters make you want to slap your forehead and shout out “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Summer is trapped in a cellar with the man who took her—and three other girls: Rose, Poppy, and Violet. His perfect flowers. His family. But flowers can't survive long cut off from the sun, and time is running out...

Short and Sweet Review

Summer is kidnapped by some man calling himself Clover and she’s locked into his cellar with three other girls who he calls Rose, Poppy, and Violet, and Summer becomes Lily.

Honestly there’s not much to this book. Our main character was kidnapped and now she has to figure out how to survive and escape. Summer is trapped in the cellar with three other girls who have been there longer than her and tell her to play along because if she doesn’t she’ll be killed. We have three POVs Summers, her boyfriend Lewis, and the kidnapper Clover. I will say I enjoyed Summers the most but I did like how Clover’s gave us an insight into why he was doing what he was doing. This book reminds me of a famous case that happened during the 2010s. I will say I enjoyed the ending of this book or at least I think I did, I was on a NyQuil kick when I got to final chapter.

Overall, this book was okay. There wasn’t a lot to it, a majority of the book just follows the girls life in the Cellar and we see Clover find more potential victims and Lewis try to find Summer. I plan on reading the sequel to this book just to see what it has in store.

It’s just a stupid meme that’s going around their small fishing town in the dead of winter—people reposting and sharing their biggest fear. But when her classmates start turning up dead—dying in the way that they said scared them the most—Izzy knows it’s no joke.

With each death hitting closer to home, Izzy sets out to try to stop the killer. Could her older sister’s friend Tristan have something to do with the deaths? He’s given her some strange vibes. Or what about his brooding cousin, Axel? But he’s in her classes at school. He’s not a murderer . . . is he? Izzie’s soon on a path that will lead her right to the killer . . . and her own worst nightmare.

Short and Sweet Review

There’s a meme going around asking about peoples biggest fears and the teens in Izzy’s town are reposting it thinking it’s a harmless thing. When Izzy finds one of her classmates dead she realizes that its more than just a game and there’s a killer out there.

This book has a pretty cool plot but the execution is bad. We have our main character Izzy who didn’t share the meme and she’s the one who finds the first victim, and because of this she thinks she’s qualified to investigate. I found Izzy to be the most insufferable character, she was just annoying and she wouldn’t listen to people to leave things alone and stay in her lane. Izzy would go around thinking she knew who it was and just going around pining murders on everyone is not a strategy. Even though Izzy didn’t share the meme and reveal her fear she ends up becoming someone the culprit wants, because she doesn’t know how to leave things alone and she kept interfering with things she shouldn’t have been. She kept messing with one of her classmates, Axel, accusing him of the murders and then she would get upset because he wanted to keep his distance from her. Izzy was just a hot mess, I get why she would want to figure things out but honestly she was better off keeping her distance. I figured out who the culprit was and it was intersting because we got to see their POV for a few chapters. I will say I didn’t like the ending it felt abrupt and I think that happens with a lot of Prestons books.

Overall, this book was not for me. There’s just something about Natasha Preston books that I don’t jive with, I keep reading them because the synopsis sounds great but them when I start reading the execution is just off and the book falls flat and unfortunately that’s what happened here.

It's a fight for survival in a building designed to ensure that no one makes it out alive.

In Piper's hometown, teenagers keep disappearing, and everyone assumes they're just a bunch of runaways. But when yet another person vanishes, Piper and her best friend Hazel suspect something more sinister is going on.

So they decide to investigate, determined to learn the truth. Their search for answers leads them to the source of the missing…and their captors. Piper and Hazel suddenly find themselves locked away in a secluded property in the middle of a privately owned forest.

But the building isn't only meant to keep them imprisoned; every room is a test to see if they can make it out alive.

And failure means being lost…forever.

Short and Sweet Review

Teenagers in Piper’s hometown are going missing. Piper and her friend Hazel get the bright idea that they should investigate. Piper and Hazel go to a party and end up leaving with two guys who are the actual kidnappers. The girls are taken to some secluded warehouse in the middle of the forest. In the warehouse there are the other teens that have gone missing and they inform the girls that there are six rooms made to torture them. Each room is made to break a person and if they can survive it they may be able to make it out of this situation alive.

This book read like an episode of Criminal Minds. Piper and Hazel were naive, like why did they think that they were going to be the ones to solve this mystery of missing teens and then they ended up getting taken themselves. In the warehouse they meet four other teens who have been there a various amount of time. The different rooms are: sound, light, sleep deprivation, temperature, one with water, and one where there was supposed to be like a fight to the death. Room zero is where people fight to the death and it’s mentioned but Piper never goes to that room. In this place Piper tries to take on the role of a leader which doesn’t go over well with everyone, and Hazel just gets insufferable, the situation obviously isn’t ideal but she is the biggest pessimist in the room. Anyway we see Piper endure some of the rooms and we see other characters come and go into them. The main thing everyone wants to do is get out alive and see their families. The captors are deranged and honestly I think the best thing about this book like I mentioned before was that it was like an episode of Criminal Minds, it really added a lot of suspense to the book. In the end there was another captor who just came out the woodwork and you can tell that everyone who came up with the idea of kidnapping people and making them endure such crazy things is not right in the head.

Overall the concept was great but the characters were horrible and so was the ending. I think that’s a common theme in Preston’s books, the endings just throw me off so much that the book becomes off-putting to me. This was an okay book but I don’t think Preston’s books are really for me.

Jagged Island: a private amusement park for the very rich—or the very influential. Liam, James, Will, Ava, Harper, and Paisley—social media influencers with millions of followers—have been invited for an exclusive weekend before the park opens. They’ll make posts and videos for their channels and report every second of their VIP treatment.

When the teens arrive, they're stunned: the resort is even better than they’d imagined. Their hotel rooms are unreal, the park’s themed rides are incredible, and the island is hauntingly beautiful. They’re given a jam-packed itinerary for the weekend.

But soon they'll discover that something's missing from their schedule: getting off the island alive.

Short and Sweet Review

Paisley and five other influencers are invited Jagged Island a private amusement park for the rich. For the weekend each of the influencers will post videos and pictures to their social media, so that the park can get some recognition before the park opens. The group thinks that the amusement rides are fun and their hotel rooms are amazing, the only problem is not everyone is going to leave the island alive.

The Island is a pretty straightforward book, it’s not something we haven’t seen before. I did like the setting of a fancy island amusement park and hotel. The aesthetic was creepy and threw some of the characters off. Each of the influencers invited have different interests and our main character Paisley is into true crime. When the characters find the first victim they’re all thrown off and start to panic. They all realize that they’re stuck on the island without a way home and one of them is a killer.

It was pretty interesting seeing all the characters run around the island and try to get away from the killer. It was also hard trying to figure out who the killer was especially when Paisley would flip back and forth between whether someone could do it or not. There was a bit of romance which was ridiculous because who has time for romance when someone is coming at you with a knife.

Overall, this was an okay book. The whole time I thought this was a three heart book for me but it was the ending that got me to take it a little lower. I think it would have great to experience more of the amusement park but I think the only thing that could’ve saved this book for me was something else happening in the end than what actually did.

It's not like she--or Dad--or Tyler--are in any danger. . . .

Short and Sweet Review

Ivy and Iris were split up after their parents divorced, Ivy lived with dad, and Iris lived with mom. When Their mom dies Iris goes to live with Ivy and her dad. Everything seems fine until it Ivy feels like Iris is trying to do everything she does and Iris may not have the best intentions. I am very conflicted, I was excited to read this book because of the synopsis but after reading the book my expectations just weren’t met. Ivy just seems like she’s paranoid when it comes to Iris and no one seems to think there’s anything wrong with Iris. I also thought Iris was extremely annoying everything would set her off, her mood swings were too much for me I didn’t enjoy her character at all. There was a lot wrong with Iris, I understand that everyone grieves differently but every time Ivy would bring up their mom Iris would shut down… She’s crazy. The whole time we’re left wondering if Iris really is trying to take Ivy’s place and why. There’s some weird things that happen. I thought this book was slow and I really had to push through to finish it but during the last 75% it started to pick up. I didn’t connect with any of the characters I felt like Ivy was one dimensional and that Iris’s dialogue was cringey. The Twin just fell short and I think it could have been better if the ending wasn’t rushed and left open ended.

They think they're invincible.
They think they can do and say whatever they want.
They think there are no consequences.
They've left me no choice.
It's time for them to pay for their sins.

A weekend partying at a remote cabin is just what Mackenzie needs. She can't wait to let loose with her friends. But a crazy night of fun leaves two of them dead-murdered.

With no signs of a forced entry or struggle, suspicion turns to the five survivors. Someone isn't telling the truth. And Mackenzie's first mistake? Assuming the killing is over...

Short and Sweet

Mackenzie and her friends go away for the weekend to stay at a Josh’s parent’s remote cabin. All of the fun the teens were expecting to have ends short when two friends are found murdered. The police suspect one of the five survivors is the culprit, because they can’t find signs of forced entry. Mackenzie not believing one of her friends could commit murder decides to start an investigation of her own.

My Thoughts

~ Mackenzie was a decent main character. She tried to see the positive in things that would happen. She was also very loyal to her friends. The only problems I had with Mackenzie was that her inner monologue was dramatic and at times I felt like she wasn’t using common sense.

~ Mackenzie decides to do her own detective work, because she thinks the police have the wrong suspects. She had these thoughts for half the book and it got ridiculous because literally no one was in the cabin besides the group of teens! Anyway while doing her detective work she learns secrets about her friends, which then has her questioning if one of them could actually be a murderer.

the office eye roll stanley hudson

~ I just found Mackenzie’s friends annoying of course you’re not going to point the finger at yourself but to blame someone just because they’re new to the group bothered me.

~ During her investigation Mackenzie starts to fall for Blake, the brother of one of the victims, the relationship between these two was definitely insta-love.

~At the end we find out who the murderer is and I wasn’t expecting it to be who it was.

Overall

I did not like the ending at all! I thought things would be resolved, but that wasn’t the case. I hope there’s a sequel just so I can have some peace of mind.
