@doctorfusionbebop: Some 17 y. o. chick named Dee Guerrera was just sent to Alcatraz 2.0 for killing her stepsister. So, how long do you think she'll last?

@morrisdavis72195: I hope she meets justice! She'll get what's coming to her! BWAHAHA!

@EltonJohnForevzz: Me? I think Dee's innocent. And I hope she can survive.

WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society's most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2.0.

When seventeen-year-old Dee Guerrera wakes up in a haze, lying on the ground of a dimly lit warehouse, she realizes she's about to be the next victim of the app. Knowing hardened criminals are getting a taste of their own medicine in this place is one thing, but Dee refuses to roll over and die for a heinous crime she didn't commit. Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she's innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman's cast of executioners kill them off one by one?

Short and Sweet Review

After being convicted of a crime she didn’t do Dee Guerrera wakes up on Alcatraz 2.0. In the future convicted criminals are sent to Alcatraz where a group of executioners kill the criminals for everyone to see  through live streaming on the postman app. Now Dee has to figure out how to prove she’s innocent and get off the island without being taken out by the postman’s killers. When Dee arrives on the island she ends up killing one of the postman’s killers right off the bat which ends up making her pretty popular and she’s given the name Cinderella Survivor. Dee is determined to stay alive and find a way to prove her innocence, and she ends up getting some help from Nyles, Griselda, Ethan, and Blair. The only problem is the postman starts to target those four because of how close they’ve become to Dee. Each character is different Nyles has actually been left alone on Alcatraz because he has diplomatic immunity, Ethan is a film buff, Griselda is snarky and doesn’t trust easily, and Blair is the kind of person to take you under her wing. I thought the book was interesting I liked how Alcatraz isn’t the normal prison we all know but a suburban island with stores and barracks for the criminals. The only thing that isn’t so great is that the postman has executioners that come and kill the criminals in different creative ways, there’s Gucci who uses fashion items, Robin who acts like Robin Hood and so on. Dee also has an interesting past because she was kidnapped when she was younger which also plays out in the story. Dee and her friends become known as the Death Row Breakfast Club on the live feed chats. I thought the addition of the chats was great because we got to see what people actually thought about what was going on to people on Alcatraz. There’s also a romance between Dee and Nyles which I didn’t mind. They’re were around each other a lot but there wasn’t too many scenes with them having PDA mainly because they were trying to stay alive. This book is a good thriller and I did like how it ended there were twists that I wasn’t expecting and I’m excited to see what will happen in the sequel!

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever.

In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.

But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose.

But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies.

And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.

Short and Sweet

Jane attends Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore preparing to be an attendant and fight off shamblers, but that’s not the life Jane wants. Jane just wants to finish her education and go back home to Kentucky. But when families start to go missing in Baltimore Jane finds herself in the middle of a situation she never thought she’d be in.

Characters

Jane: Jane is our main character and I liked her. Jane was smart unlike some of the other girls she knew how to read and write. Jane was sometimes impulsive which got her into a lot of trouble at times. Jane is also great at fighting shamblers at close combat.

Katherine: Katherine is black but she’s light skinned which gives her an advantage to pass as a white woman which she and Jane use in certain situations. I loved Katherine she well mannered, snarky, and fashionable, she’s also great with a rifle. I felt bad that people didn’t want her as an attendant because she was too pretty.

Romance

There’s not much romance in this book. Jane used to date Red Jack but they broke up and are somewhat friends now, and Jane and Gideon are just friendly with each other.

Quotes

~ “Besides Jane, the day I cannot take down a few shambles wearing something fashionable is the day I turn in my rifle.”

My Thoughts

~ Let me just start by saying Jane and Katherine are my favorite thing about this book! They didn’t like each other at first but then they ended up growing on each other and that is the greatest relationship in this book their friendship!

~ The book is told in Jane’s POV only and at the start of every chapter we see a little snippet from letters between Jane and her mother. All I really want is for Jane and her mother to be reunited.

~ I liked the mystery aspect of the book because where were all the families disappearing to? This one hit more to home for Jane because its Red Jack’s sister who also goes missing.

~ When Jane and Katherine were sent to Summerland I felt to bad for them because the Priest and the Sheriff were awful it was almost like they were running a cult.

~ Like I mentioned earlier Jane is pretty smart and she comes up with a plan to get her and Katherine out of Summerland and to somewhere safe mainly back to her home at Rosehill.

~ The ending left me wanting Jane and her mother to reunite especially because the letter problem and I can’t wait to see her journey to California

Overall

I loved this book, it was amazing and I’m ready for the sequel! I just want Jane to find her momma and I want more of Jane and Katherine I love their friendship. This book was captivating and entertaining and I can’t stop thinking about it!

After receiving a distress call from a drill team on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is sent into deep space to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

When they arrive, they find the planet littered with the remains of the project—including its members’ dead bodies. As they try to piece together what could have possibly decimated an entire project, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

Short and Sweet

When a distress call is made from a distant planet a search and rescue crew is sent to find out what happened, but when they arrive they find that everyone that was on the planet was killed. Now the crew has to figure out what happened before it happens to them. The rescue crew consists of Dylan (the captain), Lisbeth (a scientist), Thea (Lisbeth’s intern), Nova (the pilot), Sullivan (Nova’s cousin and a mechanic), Toby and Cleaver (Two tech guys). So the book starts off mysterious because no one is sure what happened on the planet Achyls because the distress call was the last form of communication to come from anyone on that planet. No one on the search and rescue crew is really sure what they’re getting themselves into. So we get to read from everyones POV and I guess it was okay but I honestly could have done without some characters, we mostly get Thea and Nova’s POV which was okay with me because they were more interesting but like I said I didn’t like everyone else. Anyway Achyls is a gross planet with one side in the sun and the other in complete darkness. Dr. Lisbeth grew up on Achyls and she has a mysterious past that she doesn’t like to talk about but she knows something about the planet and what may have happened to the other crew that she won’t mention. In the book we do meet one survivor Amos but the group isn’t sure if they can trust him or not. As the title mentioned there is something on the planet the contagion that got the other group, and I will say I liked learning about it and how it affects people. The first half of the book mainly focused on the group getting to the planet and finding out what happened and the second half focuses on them trying to find a way off. I feel like this review is all over the place but so was this book. It was loooong the chapters were looooong and by long I mean long like I’ve never read one chapter and have it take me an hour. Contagion was a good thriller I don’t usually read books that take place in space. I probably will read the next book just to find out what happens.

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas's life.

Short and Sweet Review

Cas’s job is to kill the dead and that’s what he’ll do no matter the danger that’s involved. His job takes Cas and his mother to Canada, and this time his job is to kill Anna Korlov. Anna dressed in blood. Anna is different than any other ghost Cas has had to kill. Anna is powerful and she knows she’s dead. Cas won’t stop until he finds out is making Anna so powerful, and in the process he falls in love with her. In the end Anna isn’t the one Cas had to worry about. Cas and Anna really make this book. Cas has this creepy job of killing the dead and has to deal with all of the danger that comes with having to do that. And Anna has two sides to her the girl she was before she died and a girl who kills anyone who walks into her house. I loved this book, I couldn’t put it down I just needed to know what was going to happen next. The ending has a huge twist which I wasn’t ready for. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal, horror, and romance. I’m definitely going to get the second book which is Girl of Nightmares.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie are looking forward to two days of boys, booze, and fun-filled luxury. But what starts out as fun turns twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine. And things only get worse from there.

With a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the outside world . . . so when a mysterious killer begins picking them off one by one, there’s no escape. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on one another, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

Short and Sweet

Ten is the story of ten teenagers who are invited to a secret house party on a secluded island over the course of a three-day weekend. Expecting to have a fun time at the party, best friends Meg and Minnie decide to go, despite Meg’s reservations. When the two arrive at the island and party house, things begin to go awry. After watching a video ending with a chilling message, “Vengeance is mine.”, the teenagers start getting picked off one by one by an unknown killer, and at this party, there’s no one you can trust.

What I Liked

~ Ten Teens on an island for three days and one killer that they have to avoid. Its so good and the suspense and having to try to avoid a killer on an island, there’s not a lot of places you can hide.

~There were some twist that I wasn’t expecting and let me tell you the killer is one smart cookie.

~Meg is a very likeable character. She’s always there for her friends, always wants to help out, and her instincts were on point. Especially when it comes to murders around her she didn’t do anything idiotic that would get her killed.

What I Didn’t Like

~This question is irrelevant when it comes to this book.

Overall

TEN is one of my favorite novels! If you want a novel with secrets and betrayals, shocking moments and terrifying conclusions, TEN is definitely the book you should buy and read!

For Annie Kramer, the summer before college is bittersweet—both a last hurrah of freedom and the last days she'll spend with her boyfriend, Jack, before they head off to different colleges. So she and her friends plan one final adventure: a houseboating trip on Shasta Lake, complete with booze, romance . . . and an off-limits exploration of the notorious Bull Valley Mine.

The legends of mysterious lights and missing persons on Shasta Lake have been a staple of sleepovers and campouts since Annie was a kid. Full of decrepit bridges that lead to nowhere, railroad tunnels that disappear into the mountains, and terrifying stories of unexplained deaths and bodies that were never recovered, Bull Valley Mine is notorious and frightening—perfect for an epic conclusion to their high school lives.

The trip is fun and light—at first. But when a deranged stranger stumbles upon their campsite, spouting terrifying warnings and pleas for help, it's clear that everyone is in danger. And when their exploration of the mine goes horribly wrong, Annie and her friends quickly discover that the menace of Bull Valley Mine doesn't stay at Shasta Lake—it follows them home.

As one by one her friends fall victim to this mysterious and violent force, Annie must do whatever it takes to discover the ancient secrets of the mine and save her friends . . . if she's not already too late.

Short and Sweet

Annie and her friends are graduating and planning their summer of “no regrets” before leaving for college in the fall. They take a trip to the lake, where they venture into an old, deserted mine. In the mine Annie and her friends get separated. After leaving the lake and the mine Annie and her friends realize something has followed them out of the mine and is determined to kill each of them one by one.

What I liked

~ Annie, she was smart and determined to solve the mystery of what happened in the mine and what’s after them.

~ The teens were getting picked off one by one and trying to figure out who was next and if Annie would be able to save them had me on the edge.

~ It was fast paced, eerie, and also had some humor.

What I didn’t like

~Nothing!

Quotes

“I have no idea why you would bring a controlled substance for which I do not have a medical license onto government premises. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

~“Four tunnels,” Jack says decisively, “eight of us. We’ll split up and see where they lead.”
“Split up?” Sonya asks. “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

Overall

I love all of Gretchen McNeil’s books and this one was just as good as all of her others and its kind of like Ten. The ending was great and it really threw me because I wasn’t expecting it at all. If you like mysteries and horrors this is a great book to read and you can definitely try to find out yourselves what’s after Annie and her friends.

Suspicion is a dark romantic YA story full of mystery and secrecy.
The book starts with the very end of the story where the main character starts retelling how she has come to be this situation. The beginning is all about a tragedy no less: the death of Imogen’s family and keeps going until we have unraveled all the mysteries and secrets that Rockford Manor has held for some years now. However, in all this turmoil of not really knowing what’s happening, we get to meet the “teenage side” of the main character. She has had a crush all her life on Sebastian, who she left years ago at Rockford Manor.  He has started dating her cousin.  There is some magic behind the story and related to the maze, as the cover promises, and Rockford Manor. I really liked all of the plot twists, and I loved the mystery.
I highly recommend Suspicion to everyone who likes mysteries, this book definitely blew me away.
