Robin of Locksley is dead.

Maid Marian doesn’t know how she’ll go on, but the people of Locksley town, persecuted by the Sheriff of Nottingham, need a protector. And the dreadful Guy of Gisborne, the Sheriff’s right hand, wishes to step into Robin’s shoes as Lord of Locksley and Marian’s fiancé.

Who is there to stop them?

Marian never meant to tread in Robin’s footsteps—never intended to stand as a beacon of hope to those awaiting his triumphant return. But with a sweep of his green cloak and the flash of her sword, Marian makes the choice to become her own hero: Robin Hood.

Short and Sweet

After the death of her betrothed Robin, Marian doesn’t know how she’ll go on. The people in Locksley are doomed to live in poverty or hang if they don’t do what the Sheriff of Nottingham requires. Marian is also faced with the fact that Guy of Gisborne now wants her hand in marriage. Marian isn’t sure what to do, because everything around her seems to be falling apart but when Marian puts on Robin’s green cloak and takes his sword and bow it isn’t what she was expecting at all especially when people mistake her for Robin. Now Marian disguised as Robin will be the hero that the people of Nottingham need and give them hope.

Characters

Marian (Robin Hood): Marian is our main character and she’s been through a lot, from losing her love Robin, to being asked to marry Guy of Gisborne not soon after, and seeing the people of Nottingham suffer due to the Sheriff. Marian is a strong character despite everything that has happened and she uses this strength to become Robin Hood and become the peoples champion because she thinks this is what her Robin would  want. I do think that Marian is skilled with the Bow but not so much one on one combat, she also risks a lot by going out as Robin because he is seen as being a vigilante and is breaking the law so if she’s ever caught that would be the end for her. Marian is also a caring character and will try to do what is right and fight for what is right.

Guy of Gisborne: Sir Guy is Marians love interest in this book, he is also trying to become the new Lord of Locksley. Sir Guy does what he thinks and right which is following the law and he follows the sheriffs orders. I liked Sir Guy mainly because he’s so guarded that you want to dislike him but once you peel back the layers you realize he isn’t so bad.

Elena: Elena is Marian’s maid and throughout the book we learn that Elena has been hiding a few secrets from Marian but the further we read Elena and Marians friendship develops into obviously more of a friendship instead of just a lady and her maid. Elena is also shown to be very loyal to those she loves.

Merry Men: There are three merry men and I decided to put them all in this category instead of giving them their own section because their isn’t much to say about them. The merry men consist of Will (Elena’s brother), John, and Alan (Elena’s fiancé). These three are outlaws that Marian meets in the forest and they become loyal to Robin and his cause to help the people of Nottingham.

Romance

Marian and Robin: So we don’t really know what Marian and Robin’s relationship is like because Robin has already passed, but we do get short flashbacks from his point of view. From these flashbacks it seems as though Robin would allow Marian to truly be herself and didn’t confine her to feeling as if she must do certain things like most women were expected to do during that time. Robin and Marian met as children and as they grew their feelings for each other have grown and developed and they can be themselves around each other such as when these two learn to shoot using a bowl and how to sword fight.

Marian and Sir Guy: There’s not a lot of romance between these two they have a very complicated relationship. Marian spends a lot of her time trying to avoid Sir Guy while he likes to seek her out. Marian doesn’t like Sir Guy and she definitely feels like he’s trying to take Locksley when it in her mind is still Robin’s.

Quotes

~ “But one thing you have never been, my dear, is weak.”

~ “Then this time, we’ll fight,” she said. “One more mission. Robin Hood’s last ride.”

My Thoughts

~ I liked the short flashbacks that gave us a bit of insight into Robin’s life and what he was like.

~ I think Marian had a great support system especially her father who loved her and cared about her wellbeing and put that above anything else.

~ Marian’s stable master Much, was a great character I liked how he knew what was going on with Marian as Robin Hood but he didn’t let her know that he knew but he did give her help about how to be more carful.

~ I felt that Marian went into most situations as Robin without really having a plan which put her at risk every time which was the one thing I didn’t like.

~ I will say that when Marian was staying at Nottingham thats when most of the plans to help the people took place and she got help from her merry men of course.

~ For me I thought that most of my interest was held 60% of the way into the book I think a lot more was happening at that point.

~ I thought that this was a great retelling of Robin Hood and I liked that Marian was a strong character and her strength wasn’t weekend just because she was a girl. It was also shown that the men took orders from Robin more easily than if the orders were to have come from Marian.

~ The ending had a huge twist and I didn’t see it coming but I loved it and it ended perfectly.

Overall

In the end I throughly enjoyed Sherwood. Following Marian on her journey as Robin Hood and learning to become a hero and giving people hope was great. I loved the characters they’re really what makes the book shine. Sherwood is a great book all around from the plot to the characters I do think that it took me a while to really get into it but once I did I couldn’t put it down.

After receiving a distress call from a drill team on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is sent into deep space to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

When they arrive, they find the planet littered with the remains of the project—including its members’ dead bodies. As they try to piece together what could have possibly decimated an entire project, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

Short and Sweet

When a distress call is made from a distant planet a search and rescue crew is sent to find out what happened, but when they arrive they find that everyone that was on the planet was killed. Now the crew has to figure out what happened before it happens to them. The rescue crew consists of Dylan (the captain), Lisbeth (a scientist), Thea (Lisbeth’s intern), Nova (the pilot), Sullivan (Nova’s cousin and a mechanic), Toby and Cleaver (Two tech guys). So the book starts off mysterious because no one is sure what happened on the planet Achyls because the distress call was the last form of communication to come from anyone on that planet. No one on the search and rescue crew is really sure what they’re getting themselves into. So we get to read from everyones POV and I guess it was okay but I honestly could have done without some characters, we mostly get Thea and Nova’s POV which was okay with me because they were more interesting but like I said I didn’t like everyone else. Anyway Achyls is a gross planet with one side in the sun and the other in complete darkness. Dr. Lisbeth grew up on Achyls and she has a mysterious past that she doesn’t like to talk about but she knows something about the planet and what may have happened to the other crew that she won’t mention. In the book we do meet one survivor Amos but the group isn’t sure if they can trust him or not. As the title mentioned there is something on the planet the contagion that got the other group, and I will say I liked learning about it and how it affects people. The first half of the book mainly focused on the group getting to the planet and finding out what happened and the second half focuses on them trying to find a way off. I feel like this review is all over the place but so was this book. It was loooong the chapters were looooong and by long I mean long like I’ve never read one chapter and have it take me an hour. Contagion was a good thriller I don’t usually read books that take place in space. I probably will read the next book just to find out what happens.

You may think you know the story. Penniless orphan Jane Eyre begins a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester—and, Reader, she marries him. Or does she?

Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Bronte, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

Short and Sweet

My Plain Jane follows Jane Eyre as she leaves he teaching job to become a governess at Thornfield Hall. While there Jane meets the master of the house Mr. Rochester, and falls in love, but strange things are happening at Thornfield Hall. In this adventure Jane has her best friend Charlotte Bronte an aspiring author, and they both meet Alexander Blackwood a supernatural investigator.

Characters

Jane: Jane is often described as being plain and I guess to most people who come across her she is. Jane is able to see ghost and is in fact a beacon but she wants nothing to do with becoming a ghost hunter which is why she takes the job as a governess. Jane is an interesting character I liked her but she did let the shady things that Rochester did slide, I felt like she should have inquired more about the weird things going on at Thornfield.

Charlotte: Charlotte is an aspiring author and one of Janes best friends. Charlotte is not a seer but is intrigued by the work the society does to hunt down ghost so she sticks around and tries to help Alex. Even though Charlotte can’t see ghost, her great observational skills and ability to make plans does end up becoming useful enough to keep her around as an assistant.

Alex: Alex is one of the best ghost hunters and takes his job very seriously. Alex comes across Jane and realizes that she would be a great ghost hunter but she doesn’t want to accept his offer so he decides to do whatever it takes to convince her to join the society.

Helen: Helen died when she was at Lowood so she’s obviously a ghost. Helen sticks around because she believes Jane needs her to and they are best friends. I love Helen she sticks up for Jane even though most people can’t hear or see her, and when Jane is at Thornfield she acts as a voice of reason.

Mr. Rochester: Edward Rochester is the master of Thornfield Hall and something is very off with the man. Honestly he just acts so strange and acts like certain things haven’t happened, for example if there was someone banging on the wall he would pretend he didn’t hear it.

Romance

Jane and Mr. Rochester: Um Rochester is really old and acts very strange and he tells Jane nice things and I guess this is why she loves him? Honestly its just all so strange especially his odd behavior.

Charlotte and Alex: In the beginning Alex looks at Charlotte as a pest but as time goes by and they spend more time together he starts to fall for her and vice versa. I liked this relationship it wasn’t instant it took a little while to develop.

My Thoughts

~ I thought this book was funny and I wasn’t expecting that but there was a good amount of humor.

~ I liked the mystery aspect of this book, because what in the world is going on at Thornfield and why does Rochester act so strange? I also liked the ghost hunting and it was fun seeing Alex do his job.

~ So in this book Charlotte and Jane are best friends instead of Charlotte being the author of a book Jane is a character in.

~ I loved Alex and Charlotte’s attempt at trying to recruit Jane to join the society it was interesting seeing Charlotte’s plan play out.

~ Charlotte’s brother Bran is also a character and he’s supposed to be a recruit for the society but he isn’t living up to the expectations. Bran is sweet but he does make a mess of things.

Overall

I genuinely liked this book going into it I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it but I fell in love with the premise and the characters. I haven’t read a lot of books about ghost hunters but I thought it was great and I enjoyed the twist on Jane Eyre. So the books in the series don’t have to be read in order but I definitely plan on reading the first one and I can’t wait until the third book is released!

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Short and Sweet Review

Nimona comes into villain Ballister Blackheart’s life when she decides she wants to be his sidekick. Ballisters main goal other than doing villainous things is to prove that hero Ambrosius Goldenloin and the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t really heroes and are up to something sinister. Forgot to mention this but Nimona is a shapeshifter and can take the form of any creature in a matter of seconds. Even though Ballister is a villain he feels as though there’s a way to go about his evil plans and this is something Nimona doesn’t agree with, which we see when she goes off script and is more violent than Ballister would like. When Ballister sees this other side of Nimona he starts to inquire about her past. I loved this graphic novel, I don’t read a lot of graphic novels but this one was amazing. Nimona as a character was funny and I loved Ballister despite the fact that he was a villain. I feel like the roles were switched in this book and the villains are actually our protagonist while the institution and the heroes were our antagonist. I thought the dynamic between Goldenloin and Blackheart was interesting they were once friends so there’s a lot of history there and even though they’re on the opposite team now they still care for each other. So in Nimona we get a lighthearted story about a villain and his sidekick and her unknown background, we also get a villain and his elaborate plans to bring down the heroes. There’s so many amazing aspects in this book, the story, the characters, the science, the humor, its just all around captivating and magical. Definitely read Nimona if you need something short but also mesmerizing to read!

Jules Ember was raised hearing legends of the ancient magic of the wicked Alchemist and the good Sorceress. But she has just learned the truth: She is the Alchemist, and Caro—a woman who single-handedly murdered the Queen and Jules’s first love, Roan, in cold blood—is the Sorceress.

The whole kingdom believes that Jules is responsible for the murders, and a hefty bounty has been placed on her head. And Caro is intent on destroying Jules, who stole her heart twelve lifetimes ago. Now Jules must piece together the stories of her past lives to save the person who has captured her heart in this one.

Short and Sweet

After the events that took place in Everless, Jules is back and she’s on the run. Jules is being accused of murdering the Queen and Roan when it wasn’t her but Caro the Sorceress. Now Jules must try to remember her past as the Alchemist and piece together memories that will help will her figure out how to finally kill the Sorceress.

Characters

Jules (The Alchemist): Jules the Alchemist on a mission to learn about her past and find a way to stop the Sorceress. We do see Jules get frustrated a lot in this book at her inability to remember things from her past, but each time she gets a flashback she does feel one step closer to finding a way to stop Caro.

Caro (The Sorceress): Caro is well Caro. I mean she’s the Sorceress and she’s on a mission to find Jules and finally get her heart back after all these years and she’ll stop at nothing. Caro scares me its like she finds it fun to toy with Jules and Jules’s feelings for Caro because she knows Jules cares about her.

Liam: We get a lot more of Liam in this book than we did in Everless and he is determined to help Jules and stop Caro. Liam loves Jules and desperately wants to help her and keep her safe and he thinks the best way to do that is to keep her hidden. Liam is mysterious but soon we see who he actually is and he’s kind and sweet and just wants to do the right thing.

Ina: Ina the new crowned queen and Jules’s twin sister. Ina doesn’t know the truth so she’s obviously furious at Jules for killing Roan and her mother and now as queen she has a bounty out for Jules. We don’t see Ina a lot because Jules is on the run but when we do, Ina is still kind and has a trusting nature but we learn that she’s stronger than people may think she is.

Elias: Elias is Liams best friend and helps Jules escape and aids her on the run and helps her try to figure out her past as the Alchemist. I liked Elias he was nice and liked to joke a lot but he cared for his friend Liam and would do anything to help him and Jules.

Romance

Jules and Liam: Jules and Liam grow closer in this book and they spend a lot of time together mainly because he’s helping Jules while she’s on the run. Jules knows that Caro is going to try to break her heart by trying to hurt someone Jules loves so Jules does what she thinks is best and pushes Liam away even though she wants to be with him. In the end love wins and thats all I’ll say about these two.

My Thoughts

~ I loved following Jules around on her journey to try to find out what her life as the Alchemist was like.

~ I also liked seeing more of the Alchemist powers to weave time used. It came in handy a lot in the book especially when Jules was near enemies.

~ Jules did get flashbacks from her previous lives and we learn more about her time as the Alchemist and what actually happened between her and Caro. We get the biggest flashback at the end of the book and I loved it because it just made so much sense as to how their feud started and how Jules ended up with Caro’s heart in the first place.

~ I also liked how helpful Liam was. He has spent most of his life researching the Alchemist and her life and I felt like if anyone was equipped to help Jules it was him.

~ I wish there was more with Ina and Jules I mean their sisters but Ina doesn’t know it and I mean they do get time together I just wish there was more.

~ The ending was good everything is answered but it also felt abrupt as to how it ended and I feel like that could have been better.

Overall

I thought that Evermore was a great ending to this duology. I will say I wish there was a little more to the ending than just the epilogue. I would definitely recommend this book I loved the story of the Alchemist and the Sorceress and their fight throughout different lifetimes and how it finally ended. Check these books out you won’t regret it!

Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.

Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the mainland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.

Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.

This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.

Short and Sweet

After waiting her whole life Katharine is finally the crowned queen of Fennbirn, but theres a few things that still trouble her: the dead queens that life inside of her, the fact that she doesn’t know for sure if her sisters are dead, and that the people aren’t happy with her reign. Arsinoe and Mirabella are very much alive and are on the mainland trying to adjust to life there. But things become complicated when Arsinoe starts dreaming about things that occurred during the Blue Queen’s reign and when Arsinoe sees the blue queen her message is clear, the two sisters need to go back to the island. Jules has been with the war gifted warrior Emilia training to control her legion curse but Emilia believes that Jules can take the throne from Katharine with a rebellion, and begins to call Jules the Legion Queen

Characters

Mirabella: Mirabella is my favorite character, I love her so much. She definitely loves her sisters especially Arsinoe and she takes on the big sister role and really likes it. In this book we see more of her big sister nurturing side come out because its her and Arsinoe together on the mainland.

Arsinoe: Sweet, strong Arsinoe. Arsinoe is also one of my favorite characters and her story in this book is interesting. Even though she’s on the island its like she can’t leave Fennbirn behind and that becomes even more true when she starts having dreams about a girl named Daphne who lived during the reign of the Blue Queen. Arsinoe is the only one having the dreams and its because of the low magic that she used on the island. Arsinoe’s goal is to find out what the dreams mean and why the Blue Queen would want her and Mirabella to go back to Fennbirn.

Katharine: Usually I dread reading about Katharine and her life but something changed in this book. I actually felt bad for the poor girl I couldn’t tell if she still had a bit of Katharine in her or if she really was overcome by the dead queens in her body. She really struggled with them and they did end up doing things when they took control of her that made the people question her leadership even more than they already did which only made things harder for her. The undead queen deals with a lot in this book.

Billy: Billy plays a bigger role in this book mainly because Arsinoe and Mirabella are staying with him and his family on the mainland. I loved Billy he cares about Arsinoe and he has a friendship with Mirabella and I liked seeing these relationships develop in this book.

Jules: Jules Jules Jules, the Legion Queen. Jules has been staying with Emilia training and learning how to control her war gift. I liked Jules in this book she has to make a lot of decisions in this book about her future and whether being a queen would be worth it in the end.

Emilia: … I feel bad for saying this but I could not stand Emilia, I dreaded reading scenes with her in them. Emilia is so head strong and believes that Jules needs to be the legion queen and does not care if Jules wants to do it or not. Jules would try to tell Emilia that she doesn’t want to do this and that she just wants to be able to go back to wolf spring but  Emilia will not hear any of that.

Romance

Arsinoe and Billy: We obviously get a lot more of Billy and Arsinoe in this book and I couldn’t stop swooning over them. They’re just so right for each other even though they do have to deal with certain things like Billy’s mother trying to marry him off to another girl and him having to go to school on the mainland. In the last book Arsinoe wouldn’t tell Billy how she feels about him but I’m sure she made it obvious in this book and I love how patient he is with her.

Katharine and Pietyr: Well these two definitely care about each other but they’re dynamic has somewhat changed since Katherine has become queen crowned. I like that Pietyr cares about Katharine and that she trusts him and that he’s her confidant.

Quotes

~ “I am my sister’s keeper. Her protector.”

My Thoughts

~ The whole Blue Queen mystery was intriguing. First of all, who is she? What does she want? What is she doing back? Why is she in Arsinoe’s dreams? Further into the book we get the answers to all of these questions and it was not what I was expecting. When I got the answers I had to process everything I just read. The Blue Queen and the mist play such a big role in this book.

~ The mist is supposed to protect the island of Fennbirn and it was created by the Blue Queen during her reign. But the mist starts to attack the people of Fennbirn and leaves the bodies strewn around.

~ My favorite characters POVs to read from were Arsinoe and Mirabella and I liked seeing how their bond as sisters grew. They both genuinely care for each other and it was nice to see.

~ On the island Arsinoe and Mirabella’s powers aren’t strong and start to fade because of their distance from the island.

~ On Fennbirn Katharine has to deal with the mist and a so called rebellion from the legion queen so her time as queen crowned is not going well and not only does she have to deal with that she has the dead queens to worry about.

~ Jules is just weighing her options and trying to decide if she actually wants to be a queen or if she just wants to lay low.

~ There’s so much going on in this book but in a good way and it kept me hooked until the very end. And the ending ugh cliffhanger and I need to know whats going to happen!

Overall

The books in this series just get better and better and I can’t wait until the next one is released! The build up of whats going to happen or what I think is going to happen has me on the edge of my seat. This is one of my favorite series and I will always recommend it! So on that note read this book, and if you haven’t read any of the books binge the first three!!!

Cottonwood Hollow, Kansas, is a strange place. For the past century, every girl has been born with a special talent, like the ability to Fix any object, Heal any wound, or Find what is missing.

To best friends Rome, Lux, and Mercy, their abilities often feel more like a curse. Rome may be able to Fix anything she touches, but that won’t help her mom pay rent. Lux’s ability to attract any man with a smile has always meant danger. And although Mercy can make Enough of whatever is needed, even that won’t help when her friendship with Rome and Lux is tested.

Follow three best friends in this enchanting debut novel as they discover that friendship is stronger than curses, that trust is worth the risk, and sometimes, what you’ve been looking for has been under your feet the whole time.

Short and Sweet

The girls from Cottonwood Hollow are all born with a talent, such as finding things, fixing things, or even healing. We follow Rome, Lux, and Mercy as they discover that their friendship is stronger than the secrets they’re keeping from each other.

Characters

Rome: Rome is a fixer which means she can fix things. Rome is a strong and independent character, she puts on a brave front and tries to keep her problems bottled up. Rome has been helping her mom make ends meet for the past year and she keeps this a secret from her friends because she doesn’t want her friends to pity her or look at her as a charity case.

Lux: Lux is a siren and her gift can only be used on men. Lux considers her talent a gift because one wrong look at someone and they’ll be head over heels for her. Lux has also been keeping secrets from her friends about her home life and her secret getting out can mean her whole life changing.

Mercy: Mercy’s talent is enough, which means whenever she is around there will always be enough of something like food or drinks. I loved Mercy she’s so sweet and caring. She’s nice to everyone which made her character so lovable. Mercy didn’t have any secrets that she was keeping but it hurts her to know that Lux and Rome are keeping things from her because they’re more than friends they’re like sisters.

Romance

Rome and Jett: I liked this couple a lot. Rome and Jett go to the same school but their first conversation took place when Rome ran out of gas and Jett gave her a ride to the gas station. They’re so cute together and it’s weird for Rome because she’s from Cottonwood Hollow and he’s from Evanston. Theres a few times when Rome tries to push Jett away but she realizes that she does like him. Jett is a sweet guy and he genuinely cares for Rome, and wants to get to know her.

Quotes

~ “Sometimes being a good friend means keeping your distance, even if you’re walking side by side.”

~ “We’ve fought before, but never over secrets like these.”

My Thoughts

~ The bond between these three girls is amazing, as I mentioned before they’re more like sisters than friends. They go through their problems and they’re achievements together.

~ A long time ago Emmeline Remington put a curse on the town and after that every girl born in Cottonwood Hollow has a talent. I thought that this aspect of the book was interesting because we see that everyone in town has a different kind of talent. Our three main characters learn that these talents may not be a curse but a gift.

~ The storyline was great and it held my attention the whole time I liked learning more about the girls, and the town. I thought that this book would have three POVs but we’re just reading from Romes.

~ Not only do we learn about all of the girls personal lives but we also learn that Emmeline left a dowry chest and Lux believes that the contents of this chest can help her fix her situation at home and Rome believes it could help her too.

~ Both Lux and Rome are keeping secrets from Mercy because they don’t think she’s strong enough to handle it and because she’s the gentle one out of the three of them but they learn that Mercy is stronger than she looks.

~ I like that each girl had a different characteristics and they still complemented each other. Rome is brave and tries to deal with things on her own, Lux is strong and trying to make it, and Mercy is compassionate and has a heart of gold.

Overall

This book was so AMAZING and I couldn’t put it down! It was such a beautiful journey that these three girls go through to learn that their bond as friends is unbreakable and that they truly care for each other no matter what the circumstances are. The characters are relatable and I got so invested in their lives. The Deepest Roots is a contemporary with a little magic, which was interesting and made me more interested in learning about the talents in town and to find this dowry chest. I absolutely loved this book and in the short amount of time that I’ve read it and processed everything it has become one of my favorites! I definitely recommend this book, the writing, the storyline, and the characters are just everything that I was looking for to get me back into reading.

Emelina Flores and her sister, Olivia, were determined to bring peace to the people of Ruina. But as the war for liberation raged on, what triumph and freedom meant to Em and Olivia slowly changed. As Olivia’s violence and thirst for vengeance became her only ambition, Em was left to pick up the pieces.

But it’s not only Em who is upset by Olivia’s increased violence. Other members of the Ruined army are beginning to see the cracks, and soon a small group of them defects from Olivia’s army and joins Em instead.

The two sisters are soon pitted against each other in an epic battle for the kingdom and the future, and only one will win.

Short and Sweet

After everything that has happened in the past two novels Emelina and Olivia are divided and only one sister will make it out alive. Alliances will have to be made and people will have to chose sides. Emelina knows that theres faults in Olivia’s way of thinking and the other Ruined are noticing it too. Its only a matter of time before Emelina has to figure out a way to defeat her sister.

Characters

Emelina: One of the queens of Ruina. Em is obviously the more sensible sister of the two, she doesn’t feel like she needs to conquer the world she just wants to be with Cas and keep her people safe. She’s smart and even though she knows what she’s going to end up doing will be hard Em knows its what needs to be done and I commend her for that.

Olivia: The other queen of Ruina. The first word that comes to mind when I think about Olivia is crazy, she just has one thing on her mind and thats revenge. She expects everyone to side with her and she plans on getting what she wants even if others don’t agree with her.

Cas: The king of Lera. After everything that has happened Cas has to rebuild Lera and plans to do things differently than his parents did and that includes making an alliance with the Ruined even though he knows his people are reluctant about the idea. Cas is very compassionate and considers other peoples interest and ideas before he makes a decision.

Aren: One of the most powerful ruined. I love Aren he’s so loyal to Em and understands her point of view and I just love how he protects her especially because she’s useless its helpful when he’s around because the other ruined listen. Aren is also compassionate and cares about people and is willing to risk his life in order to save others.

Iria: The Olso warrior who betrayed her army in order to help Aren. We learn more about Iria because we get to read from her point of view. I actually liked her a lot she risked a lot by helping Aren and because of it she ends up in a jail and becoming known as a traitor.

Galo: One of Cas’ guards. Galo goes through a lot in this book, he’s trying to find his place. I like him and how willing he was to help the Ruined in this book. Its also a joke in this book that he always feels like he has to save everyone and I think that its really sweet.

Romance

Emelina and Cas: My favorite couple in the book of course. I love that these two have stuck together even though they originally supposed to be together. They have to face all of the odds and somehow they make it work and its just so impressive, love conquers all.

Aren and Iria: I’m in love with this relationship, these two just mesh so well. I mean Iria literally became a traitor to her people just to save Aren and in this book he delivers on his promise to rescue her and it’s just so sweet and the loyalty makes my heart swell. When you read from each of their POVs they’re thinking about each other she’s thinking about if he’ll actually come to save her and he’s just thinking about when he’ll get the chance to finally go rescue her. They care so much about each other and you can tell and I love it!

Galo and Mateo: Two guards in love. We get to see there relationship a bit more in this book but most of the time they’re separated, but even thought they aren’t together you can tell they care about each other.

Quotes

~”You can run now, sister.” Olivia said from behind her. “But I’m coming for you. I promise.”

~”The Ruined don’t hide anymore. We fight.”

My Thoughts

~ Allied takes place right after the events of Avenged and now the Ruined are trying to decide if they should follow Olivia or Em. There’s a lot of tension surrounding the Ruined and the sisters especially because they know they can’t trust each other.

~ I liked how everything came down to stopping Olivia it was obviously a hard decision for Em to make because it was her sister, the sister she risked everything for to save, but Em knew the only way to keep others safe was to stop Olivia.

~ On one hand I like Olivia because she’s ruthless but on the other hand she’s really crazy like the amount of people she took out was insane.

~ We get to read from multiple characters POVs which I liked and it didn’t get confusing at any point I think it helped add to the story.

~ Theres just so much going on in this book and it held my attention the whole way through. I enjoyed reading about the betrayal and alliances that were eventually formed I also liked reading about the war that was going to happen either way.

~ Out of all the books in the series Allied would have to be my favorite I loved how everything was wrapped up.

Overall

I’m so sad that this trilogy is over! It became one of my favorites after I finished reading Ruined I knew this series was going to be amazing and it was. Allied is just the perfect ending to this trilogy I was worried that it may fall short but it does not disappoint! I definitely think this series is worth reading and I will never stop recommending it to friends and family, so if you haven’t read the Ruined series yet I strongly suggest you pick it up today!

Mirabella, Arsinoe, and Katharine weren't always scheming to murder each other. They weren't always surrounded by rival foster families, each swearing to have their best interests at heart. And they weren't always afraid of being unexpectedly attacked—by one of their own sisters, no less—in a way that could cost them their last breath.

They used to be together. Just three sisters. Alone in a glen.

This is the story of the three queens—after they were born, before they were separated, during the time when they all lived together, loved each other, and protected each other. It’s also the story of the day they were torn apart, and the several years that follow.

From birth to eleven years old, this is a rare glimpse of the queens' lives…before they were at stake.

Short and Sweet Review

What could go wrong when you read a book about your favorite queens before they knew about having to kill each other? Absolutely nothing. When we first start this novella we get to read about The queens parents, Queen Camille and King Philippe. I love reading about past queens I think it would be interesting to see what their lives are like after they give birth to the future queens and leave Fennbirn. In this book we get to see the queens when they were younger when they lived at the cottage and how close they were as sisters and their bond. We also get some insight on some things that I don’t want to spoil for you guys. All of the queens have a pretty rough go of it once they’re separated but we see how they adjust to life away from each other and with their new foster families. Mirabella is my favorite queen, she is the oldest of the three but she has a motherly instinct and still cares about her sisters even though she can no longer see them. This book really explains why each queen is the way she is, why Mirabella is so reluctant to hurt her sisters, why Arsinoe tries to leave the island, and why Katherine the youngest is struggling with being a poisoner. I love this series and I think everyone should read it. I would recommend reading this novella after the first book so nothing gets spoiled for you!

Triplet queens born on the island of Fennbirn can be many things: Elementals. Poisoners. Naturalists. If an oracle queen is born, however, one with the gift of sight, she’s immediately drowned, extinguishing her chance at ever taking the throne.

But that’s not how it always was. This cautionary practice started long ago, with Queen Elsabet—the legendary, and last, oracle queen—whose reign was tinged with blood and horror.

Paranoid, ruthless, and utterly mad, Elsabet’s mistrust led to the senseless slaying of three entire houses of innocent people. At least, that’s the unchallenged tale carried down from generation to generation. But what really happened? Discover the true story behind the queen who, though born with the gift of sight, could not foresee her swift and sudden fall from power . . . until it was too late.

Short and Sweet Review

“Do not be sorry. Just do not become my enemy.”

The Oracle Queen is the story of the last oracle queen of Fennbirn, Queen Elsabet. Queen Elsabet is known for taking the throne and eventually going crazy, she orders that three houses with families inside be burnt down without reason or cause. I felt really bad reading Elsabet’s story she was dealt a bad hand when it came to the people closest to her that she should have been able to trust. Everyone around her was out to make her look bad except her maid and the leader of the queens guard. I liked Elsabet she knew that some of the people on the black council were a little shady and didn’t like how she operated as the queen. There’s a lot of back stabbing and shadiness that goes on in this book and I just wish that Elsabet and the people she could actually trust caught onto it before it was too late. When starting this book I came into it thinking that Elsabet was ruling with an iron fist and that she was crazy but she was the opposite and trying to make everyone happy. Elsabet’s story is just tragic and after reading it I’m just so conflicted I don’t want to spoil anything but if it wasn’t for the people in this book all future born oracle queens wouldn’t be drowned out of the fear that they’re mad. I enjoyed this novella and learning about the last oracle queen I just wish Elsabet’s fate turned out a little differently. I would say that this novella can be read before starting the Three Dark Crowns series or in between books.
