For over a year, the Bronx has been plagued by sudden disappearances that no one can explain. Sixteen-year-old Raquel does her best to ignore it. After all, the police only look for the white kids. But when her crush Charlize's cousin goes missing, Raquel starts to pay attention—especially when her own mom comes down with a mysterious illness that seems linked to the disappearances.

Raquel and Charlize team up to investigate, but they soon discover that everything is tied to a terrifying urban legend called the Echo Game. The game is rumored to trap people in a sinister world underneath the city, and the rules are based on a particularly dark chapter in New York's past. And if the friends want to save their home and everyone they love, they will have to play the game and destroy the evil at its heart—or die trying.

Short and Sweet Review

For the past year teens have been disappearing in the Bronx and no one has an answer about what’s happening. Raquel usually ignores these things but when one of the disappearances hits close to home Raquel knows she needs to help. When Charlize, Raquels crush’s cousin goes missing and Raquels mom contracts a mysteries illness, the girls team up to investigate what’s going on in the Bronx.

The book starts off with us seeing Cisco, Charlize’s cousin going a little crazy and he asks Charlize for help but eventually he ends up going missing. Raquels mom was in close contact with Cisco and ends up having to be quarantined and put in a medical induced coma. The girls don’t really know what’s going on but they find out that Cisco was playing a game called the echo. Essentially the Echo is played at like 3 in the morning and there’s a set of rules and if you break one of those rules you’re in trouble.

This book was so good, it was creepy and at some points I really did regret reading it at night. The echo was interesting because it takes the people who play to a dark chapter in their city’s past and in this case it took Raquel and her friends to the period of the Bronx burnings. I liked Raquel even though this whole situation was scary, she faced it head on twice! If it were me I would have no parts of playing the echo game. This group of friends were resourceful and had each others backs which I appreciated because everyone needs a good support system and Raquel had that. There was some good history in this book, I’ve never heard of the Bronx burnings before reading this book.

Burn Down, Rise Up will keep you up at night, and its a good kind of spooky that’ll have you flipping pages until you find out what’s really happening down in the echo and whether our protagonist can survive this game!

.27 is a number Ruby hates. It's a number that marks the percentage of the population that has survived. It's a number that means she's one of the "lucky" few still standing. And it's a number that says her father is probably dead.

Against all odds, Ruby has survived the catastrophic onset of the killer rain. Two weeks after the radio started broadcasting the warning, "It's in the rain. It's fatal and there's no cure," the drinkable water is running out. Ruby's left with two options: persevere on her own or embark on a treacherous journey across the country to find her father—if he's even still alive.

Short and Sweet Review

Ruby is hanging out at a friends house when the panic begins that something is wrong with the rain and it ends up being all the water. The rain is deadly and one drop hitting you could kill you, Ruby ends up surviving but its been two weeks since the initial rain storm that started everything and now drinkable water is running out. Now Ruby has decide whether she wants to stick it out on her own or try to go to London and find her dad.

This was an interesting book because it’s all about your survival instincts and Ruby has to learn to think about herself if she’s going to make it. After the first storm, Ruby was with her mom, baby brother, and step dad, but eventually it’s just Ruby. When it’s just Ruby that’s when I thought the book started to pick up mainly because we get to see how she’s going to survive on her own and make the trip to London. Eventually she meets up with someone from school Darius and a girl that he found and they begin to travel with Ruby. This is where things started to go downhill. I thought Ruby was better off on her own, there was nothing wrong with Darius he honestly had a lot of good input but for some reason Ruby always wanted to argue with him, most of their dialogue was Ruby shouting at him. She also started to make some questionable decisions. The book is written in a way in which its Ruby writing about her experience. I didn’t mind the writing style but I did mind how a promising character seemed to forget what she should be focusing on.

Overall the premise is interesting and I may read the sequel just to see how everything ends.

After a tragic accident at Blackbrook Academy kills one of their own, Orchid, Scarlett, Peacock, Mustard, and Plum are desperate to put the pieces back together and finish out the year. The Murder Crew may have earned their nickname, but the last of their secrets are still coming to light and threatening to destroy friendships, futures, and more. And when another suspicious death rocks the campus and Blackbrook's dark past crashes into its present, they have a choice: Band together or turn on each other.

Because this year's prom? It's to die for.

Short and Sweet

In the Ballroom with the Candlestick picks up where the previous book left off. Vaughn is dead and everyone is still reeling from his death especially Orchid. The rest of the murder crew just wants to finish the school year, but it seems like murder is a trend at Blackbrook and this group has to stick together or let the pressure turn them against each other.

This was an okay ending to everything. Everyone finally learns that Vaughn has a twin brother and he causes a mess of things because people don’t know what his intentions are. People are still getting murdered and the murder crew is determined to finally put an end to the tragedies that has been plaguing the academy. Beth still has the shortest chapters and this time her chapters are of her trying to solve the mystery. Scarlet is still making boss moves and trying to prove that she’s able to be in charge. Mustard and Finn are doing their own thing. Orchid is trying to figure out what she can about Oliver the evil twin. I feel like with all of the POVs there’s not really much character development and over the course of three books these characters didn’t have much substance. I think my favorite thing about this book was the ending and how we got to see alternate endings and see an array of suspects.

This is a fun book series, the mystery was a little confusing, but if you’re looking for a nostalgic and fun read this series is for you.

Eight hours. Six friends. Five survive.

Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends: Her best friend - the older brother - his perfect girlfriend - a secret crush - a classmate - and a killer.

When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead.

With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target. But is there a liar among them? Buried secrets will be forced to light and tensions inside the RV will reach deadly levels. Not all of them will survive the night. . . .

Short and Sweet Review

It’s spring break, Red and five others are heading down to the beach for some fun. But when their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere and there’s no cell service, the group realizes that this was no accident, they were targeted. The group is given until dawn to give up a secret that the person who is keeping them hostage is looking for.

This book was so good and fast paced that it was hard to put down. Red, her best friend Maddy, Maddy’s brother Oliver and his girlfriend Reyna, and two friends from school Arthur and Simon are ready for spring break but the RV breaking down was never part of the plan. When they think that its a simple fix they realize that somebody planned this and now they’re really trapped in the RV. The person is looking for a secret and it seems like a simple request but this group will tear each other apart and the circumstances bring out the worst in some people. Red has been through a lot, she’s lost her mom, her dad is distant, and now she doesn’t know whether she’ll make it out of the RV. Things really start going when the group is trying to find a way to get out of the RV but the shooter makes it clear that none of them will make it out of the RV alive without the secret being revealed. Oliver was the worst character he was insufferable and he made it very clear that he only cared about his own safety. I didn’t mind any of the other characters but I was interested in learning what kind of things they were hiding. The end was great and we see that what was revealed is a lot more complicated than surface level.

Holly Jackson did a great job at writing a book that creates suspense and will keep you on the edge of your seat. She also did a great job writing the characters and making you question whether they can be trusted or not. Definitely get your hands on this book!

A cursed prince sits alone in a secluded castle. Few have seen him, but those who claim they have say his hair is wild and nails are sharp--like a beast's! But how did this prince, once jovial and beloved by the people, come to be a reclusive and bitter monster? And is it possible that he can ever find true love and break the curse that has been placed upon him?

The Beast Within follows Prince Adams transformation into the beast and his quest to find true love. In the beginning we see that the prince is engaged to Circe but once he sees her covered in mud he decides that she’s no longer good for him. What the prince didn’t know is that Circe is a witch and she curses him and turns him into the beast. The prince needs to find love before time runs out. We see the prince try to fall in love with a girl but he was just trying to use her to break the curse which is why it didn’t work. In the story we also see Belle and how it takes time but eventually falls in love with the beast. What was also interesting was seeing more of the odd sisters and how they meddle in peoples affairs.

This was a good book, I’m interested in reading more about the villains and seeing how they became who they are.

When it becomes clear the arch-villainess the Ankh has made her next move, it will take all of Mina's Holmesian ingenuity and Evaline's courage and determination to stop the criminal from executing her boldest and most dangerous plan yet!

Short and Sweet Review

Mina and Evaline are back. After what happened with the Chess Queen Enigma the girls have been laying low but after Mina receives a package she and Evaline are on the search for the Carnelian Crow.

In this book we see the girls try to figure out what the Carnelian Crow is and its importance. The Ankh is also back and is making her next book. Evaline’s family is having financial problems so her sister in law is trying to find her someone rich to marry. This book was pretty short and I don’t think there was a lot going on. The girls did more detective work on their own in this book and it was nice to see their investigation skills and how they got out of certain situations. We see characters from the past books and I liked seeing Mina and Grayling together. The ending was probably the best part because there was a lot of action, it did end on a cliffhanger so I’m interested to see how it all ends in the next book.

Why exactly is the wicked Queen so nasty, particularly to Snow White? Perhaps it has something to do with the creepy-looking man in the magic mirror who's not just some random spooky visage...

Short and Sweet Review

Fairest of All tells the story of the Evil Queen before she became the Evil Queen. We see the queen earlier in life when she marries the king and becomes Snow Whites step mother. Snow White and the queen have a good relationship she tries to be a mother to Snow White while also trying not to replace memories of Snow Whites mom. The King goes off to war but before he leaves he gifts the queen with a mirror that ends up being enchanted. I feel like we all know what happens from here but the Queen begins talking to the mirror and that’s when her descent into the Evil Queen begins. The Evil Queen wants more power and beauty and eventually she becomes unrecognizable to those who she used to love the most.

This was a short book and easy to read. It was an interesting retelling and I liked seeing the beginning of her story and how she became the villain we know her as today.

Pip is about to head to college, but she is still haunted by the way her last investigation ended. She’s used to online death threats in the wake of her viral true-crime podcast, but she can’t help noticing an anonymous person who keeps asking her: Who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears?

Soon the threats escalate and Pip realizes that someone is following her in real life. When she starts to find connections between her stalker and a local serial killer caught six years ago, she wonders if maybe the wrong man is behind bars.

Police refuse to act, so Pip has only one choice: find the suspect herself—or be the next victim. As the deadly game plays out, Pip discovers that everything in her small town is coming full circle . . .and if she doesn’t find the answers, this time she will be the one who disappears. . .

Short and Sweet Review

Pip is about to head to college but she’s still uneasy about how her last investigation ended. Having her own podcast, Pip is used to seeing threats but she’s paying attention to the one asking, “who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears.” Its apparent to Pip that she has a stalker and of course she’s going to investigate but she has to act fast because someone is out to get her.

In this book we see Pip kind of unraveling she still thinks about her last investigation and Stanley’s death kind of haunts her. So when she starts seeing the signs that someone is stalking her, the dead birds, the chalk drawings, and the strange emails, Pip wonders if she’s losing her mind. She sees a similarity in the way she’s being threatened and how a serial caught six years ago would operate but now Pip is trying to figure out if the wrong man is behind bars and if the actually serial killer is out and if she’ll be the next victim. This book has two parts, in the first part we see Pip dealing with her stalker and starting a new investigation, in the second part we see Pip try to get away with murder. I’ve read the first two books in this series and seeing as this is the last one, I have become very invested in Pip and her safety. Everything Pip has learned about true crime and murder becomes handy in this book because she has a murder to cover up. I love the characters and in this book everything comes around full circle we see characters from the first two books, and we see how everything fits together like a puzzle piece in this last book. I will say Pip had some amazing friends and an even better boyfriend. The bond between her and Ravi its amazing, he’s able to get her to think logically and he’s so caring and is willing to do anything to make sure she’s okay.

The plot in this book is amazing. I learned a lot from this book but I still don’t think I’d be able to get away with murder. Pip is an amazing character and she fights for what she believes in even if it puts her in harms way. I will definitely miss following Pip around on her investigations and reading from her podcast. This series has become one of my favorites and holds a special place in my heart!

After the death of her mom (screw cancer), seventeen-year-old Cecelia Ellis goes to live with her estranged grandmother, a celebrated author whose Victorian mansion is as creepy as the murder mysteries she writes. On the surface, life is utterly ordinary in the California coastal town . . . until the homecoming queen is murdered. And she’s not Seaview’s first pretty dead queen.

With a copycat killer on the loose, Cecelia throws herself into the investigation, determined to crack the case like the heroines in her grandmother’s books. But the more Cecelia digs into the town’s secrets, the more she worries that her own mystery might not have a storybook ending.

Short and Sweet Review

After her mothers passing Cecelia is sent to live with her grandmother a famous author in a small town filled with mystery. Cecelia becomes friends with a group of teens who are pretty popular but when one of them is murdered on homecoming night Cecelias new friends start looking like suspects.

This was a pretty good mystery I liked that the current murder was a copycat of a murder that happened years ago in this town to another homecoming queen. It was also interesting that one of Maura’s biggest books was about the murder that took place 50 years ago and they even made a movie about it. Anyway it was interesting to see the dynamics between the characters they came from high places, one was the mayors kid, one a police officers kid, and another one is a therapists kid. Cecelia decides to put on her detective cap but she learns its not as easy as it seems to solve a mystery. All of her new friends have something to hide and she has to decide whether the secrets they’re hiding are relevant enough to make them a murderer. There were some points in the book that were slow but the ending made up for it. I was not expecting what happened in the end and the whole time I didn’t really know who the culprit would be.

This was an exciting mystery and the plot was great and will have you wanting to solve both mysteries that are a stain on Seaview’s history.

The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution.

After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on a mission. One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang’s heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less.

Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right—even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure.

Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma’s cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren’t prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.

Short and Sweet Review

After the events of the first book Shanghai is now on the edge of a revolution. There’s a lot of tension in the city and one wrong move could get you killed. Juliette and Roma aren’t speaking especially because Roma thinks Juliette betrayed him in the biggest way. But when someone starts blackmailing both the Scarlets and the White Flowers, Juliette and Roma have to work together to stop the chaos that is once again arising in Shanghai.

This sequel was such a good ending to this epic duology. Roma and Juliette still have feelings for each other but Juliette thinks its easier for Roma to hate her just so she can keep him safe a little longer. Roma still loves Juliette even though he thinks she killed his closest friend. There’s so much going on in this book but in a good way. We see both gangs being blackmailed and Juliette and Roma trying to find the blackmailer. Some of the Scarlets were doing things that were shocking and I think that was one of the biggest twists because it was a betrayal to Juliette and her cousin. Also Juliette has to stay on her toes because Tyler is still coming for her position. I thought it was interesting that even though Juliette was the heir of the Scarlets, Tyler got more respect from their family. In the end Juliette knows that things in Shanghai aren’t going to get better, the blood feud is never going to end until one gang is completely gone, so she makes the decision to take Roma and make a run for it and from there we can only hope those two had a happily ever after.

Honestly this was a book that kept me hooked until the very end. This was such an imaginative retelling of Romeo and Juliette and I would read this duology again. These Violent Delights duology is worth the read, you’ll fall in love with the characters, the plot, and the forbidden romance!
