Two girls attended a magical ball, but one was never seen again.

At least that’s what those who betrayed her believed.

Two years after being framed for fraud by the Society of the Charmed, an exclusive club of New York’s wealthiest—and most magical—citizens, Emmy Vallillo wastes away in prison, utterly alone.

Until her cell door bursts open, revealing Jack Fontaine, one of the Society’s favorite sons, now imprisoned for a crime he swears he didn’t commit. They make a deal: He’ll help Emmy escape if she helps destroy those who’ve wronged them.

Together, the two break free and, using Emmy’s magic to transform their appearances, they soon become the Society’s new darlings. Now their enemies want to dine with them. Attend lavish balls with them. Marry them. But ruining lives requires Emmy to trust Jack with hers, despite his dark secrets—and the infuriating attraction between them.

When another betrayal brings their enemies to their doorstep, Emmy must choose: finish exacting revenge, or give up the money, the magic, and her safety in this cutthroat world for the most treacherous thing of all—love.

Short and Sweet Review

Emmy went to the ball with her best friend Grace and only one of them walked away a free woman. Ever since that night two years ago Emmy has been locked up and everyone in high society knows her as a fraud. When Jack Fontaine opens Emmy’s cell he makes her a deal that he’ll help her escape and they can both get revenge on those in society who have wronged them. Emmy agrees and she uses her magic to change both of their appearances and soon they become society’s new darlings. Emmy doesn’t exactly trust Jack so it makes it hard to go through this plan but in the end she has to decide if revenge is more important or love.

Emmy was betrayed by her best friend and she’s had two long years to think about how everything went wrong and also grieve because her father also died that night. Jack Fontaine is one of society’s favorite sons and he’s recently been taken in for a crime he swears he didn’t commit but he’s ready to break out and bring Emmy with him. Emmy is a bit weary at first but accepts Jacks offer. Jack wants to get revenge on a few people in high society and he clues Emmy in on the people who were involved in her downfall and she’s ready to also get her sweet revenge. Emmy uses her magic to change their appearances and these two are now going to balls and diners and taking down their enemies. The only problem is they have one enemy who is one step ahead of them. I will say the magic system in this book is interesting and not everyone has magic, but Emmy is able to transform objects into different things, I did like seeing what magic other characters possessed. We get to meet Grace which is the one who betrayed Emmy, and Grace is enemy number one to Emmy. Grace is honestly so ruthless and cruel which is exactly why she made the best villain. It was satisfying seeing Emmy and Jack and their little crew plot and watch their enemies pay the price. There’s obviously one big hit that this crew has been planning and it was interesting and also suspenseful watching everything play out. There is a bit of romance between Jack and Emmy which grows as the book progresses. The ending was great and I’m not mad that this was a standalone because everything was wrapped up well.

Overall, this book was so good it kind of reminds me of the movie Do Revenge. If you want to see two characters infiltrate high society and bring down their enemies from within, then this book is for you!
