Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…

Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

Short and Sweet Review

200 years ago three sisters were accused of being witches and were drowned. Now every summer solstice they come back and take the bodies of three girls and drown unsuspecting boys in the harbor where they were killed.

Penny Talbot is used to her towns history and the story of the Swan sisters, but when Bo and outsider comes to town she feels like she has to look out for him. Both Penny and Bo are hiding secrets from each other and those secrets may become their downfall.

I liked the setting of Sparrow it seemed like a dreary little town and Penny lived on an island away from the town. We see a lot of the island mainly because when it’s Swan season Penny wants to stay where it’s safe. When Bo comes to town Penny feels a need to keep him safe, especially because he has no idea about the Swan sisters and could end up being a victim if he isn’t careful. Bo is hiding the reason of why he came to Sparrow and Penny is hiding her ability to see the Swan sisters. I thought it was interesting that Penny had the ability to see the sisters while no one else in town could, it was also useful because she knew who to avoid. We learn more about the swan sisters which I liked, they ended up being dealt a bad card. Penny and Bo also had a little romance, which I didn’t mind I liked them together. The plot twist at the end was actually really good and I suspected something but not what actually ended up happening

The mystery of who the Swan sisters could be and our two characters secrets kept me reading til the very end. I loved the plot and the characters and it was a great read for the month of October!
