Twin sisters, Mercy and Hunter are witches, direct descendants of the Goode family, the founders of their town. After the murder of their mother at the hands of a foul demon, they have become the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds--ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and the darkest of creatures exist.

Grief has taken a terrible toll on the twins. Rather than bringing them together, their sadness has torn them apart, driving Mercy to attempt to save the crumbling Gates without her twin and Hunter into the arms of a dangerous goddess. While Mercy looks for aid from Khenti, Guardian of the Egyptian Underworld, Hunter begins to realize the goddess she’s allied with is more monster than deity. She needs her sister’s help, but Mercy is beyond her reach on an adventure that could cost them everything, including their world.

Short and Sweet Review

Omens Bite picks up right where Spells Trouble ended. Hunter and Mercy still aren’t getting along and at this point I think it’s petty and quite obnoxious. Hunter doesn’t want to be around Mercy and blames her for making her forsake her God Tyr. Mercy thinks Hunter needs to grow up. Its funny because Mercy says some pretty crappy things to Hunter but when Hunter serves it right back Mercy starts crying and wants to know how Hunter can be so mean to her. Anyway the girls are still trying to figure out what’s going on with the gates but separately. Mercy starts spending more time with Khenti the guardian of the Egyptian underworld. While Hunter is being used by her new Goddess Amphitrite. The first half of the book was good and I really had high hopes that I would like this book more than the first but then the second half happened and I was disappointed but not surprised. Also there’s a few chapters where Kirk had his POV and honestly he is one of the worst people and he had an encounter with Mercy that just made me uncomfortable. His whole M.O. in this book is trying to convince everyone that Mercy and Hunter are witches but he just comes across as crazy. Xena the cat person is in this book and she also makes me very uncomfortable. She’s just so weird when she’s in her human form she still acts like a cat licking people and hissing its just very off-putting. If she was like Salem from Sabrina a cat that can talk I would be okay with it but her changing into a human and doing the weirdest things just… gross! So the book leaves off on a cliffhanger Mercy needs Hunters help and Hunter needs to find a way to get rid of Amphitrite. This book had a lot of potential but I was put off by the cat and Mercy and Hunter’s petty fighting. I will read the next book because I’m already so far in so what do I have to lose?

ROWAN OF WILDWOOD, the Empress of Witches. Rowan has a madly ambitious plan to reshape the world with her shadow magic, and only Emma is standing in her way. But getting to Emma won’t be easy. Emma has loyal and vigilant friends, not the least of whom is…
STEFAN HILDEBRAND, a werewolf now dying from a shotgun wound. Desperate to protect Emma, he’ll do anything to claw his way back to life. But does that include making a devil’s bargain with an entity called the Trickster?

My Thoughts

~ Vampire Rising picks up right where Vampire soul ended, so there’s no confusion when you start reading this book.

~ All of the characters from the previous book return, we also get to meet a few new ones.

~ I loved experiencing Emma’s past lives with her. It was interesting to see how she lived before she became Emma Rue.

~ I felt bad for Emma she just found Julian only to lose him, and not only that she’s the only one who remembers that he exist. I’m glad Emma didn’t give up on Julian after his disappearance she tries everything she can to get him back.

~Emma has a lot to deal with in this book, she’s trying to find Julian and she’s becoming a transcendent again.

~ Stefan is back and he’s also going through a change after meeting a guy named the trickster. I love how protective Stefan is over Emma, he continues to help her and watch out for her.

~ Rowan is also back and she’s trying to get a weapon back from Emma, while she also works on some experiments.

~ There’s also references to some of the novellas which made me so happy.

Overall

I loved this book as much as the first one if not more! The world gets more complex and I loved meeting the new characters as they added more to the plot. Vampire Rising ended with a cliffhanger and I just want to know what happens next! I love Emma as a character and I can’t wait to continue this journey with the Heartblaze novels. I would recommend this series and the novellas too!

Bound together. Worlds apart.

Kami Glass is in love with someone she's never met—a boy she's talked to in her head since she was born. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she has learned ways to turn that to her advantage. Her life seems to be in order, until disturbing events begin to occur. There has been screaming in the woods and the manor overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. . . . The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. Now Kami can see that the town she has known and loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secrets—and a murderer. The key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy she thought was imaginary is real, and definitely and deliciously dangerous.

Short and Sweet

Kami Glass lives in Sorry-in-the-Vale. Kami is your average high school journalist always trying to get the story. The only thing that’s not normal about Kami is the fact she has been communicating via her mind with a boy since she was a baby. Kami gets her big break when the Lynburns come back to town and she’s determined to learn their secrets.

What I liked

~Kami, she’s so determined and she’s your modern day Nancy Drew.

~Surprisingly this book was funny, which I wasn’t expecting it to be.

~The mystery kept me on my toes I actually didn’t know what secret the Lynburns were hiding.

~Jared and getting to see his point of view sometimes.

~The newspaper crew: Kami, Angela, Holly, Jared, and Ash.

What I didn’t like

~The only thing that bothered me was when the POV would switch between Kami and Jared I was confused about what was going on.

Quotes

~“Kami said, “I want you to go in there and vamp that receptionist.”  “What?” Ash said blankly.  “You know,” Kami said. “Dazzle her with your charms. Rock her world. Go on.”

Overall

I’m definitely glad I read this book! I thought the characters were great and so was the mystery. I plan on reading Untold soon! By the way something I just found out, on Sarah Rees Brennan’s website there’s drawings of the characters. If you like mysteries, with a paranormal aspect in a goth setting check this book out!

Ash, a high school senior from a broken home, performs an act of kindness that forces her into hiding. Now she’s living in the woods, training dogs to guard livestock. She soon discovers that she’s not alone in the forest. A dark, malignant beast is preying on her beloved animals. As Ash edges toward despair, a mysterious stranger appears…

Magnus, a werewolf from the nearby town of Corby, claims he is hunting the beast, but he knows more that he’s saying. His connection to Ash, and his desire for her, take her by surprise.

Their forbidden attraction captures the attention of Corby’s dangerous Gray Wolves, a council of elders determined to keep humans and werewolves apart. If necessary, they won’t hesitate to eliminate Ash, if the beast doesn’t get her first.

To survive, Ash must balance the needs of her heart with the necessities of survival. If she fails, she’ll meet a gruesome end in a forest without pity.

Ash lives alone out in the woods and she thinks she’s alone until something keeps attacking her livestock. Now Ash has to find what’s attacking her livestock and find a way to survive all while keeping her heart in check when stranger Magnus comes along. I enjoyed reading this novella! It was nice to read especially because it takes place in the same world as the Heartblaze novel. Ash was an amazing and enjoyable heroine she was strong and independent and at the same time compassionate. Magnus was a great character to we don’t see much of him but he when we do get to meet him we just want more! Magnus was the fierce alpha wolf. I really liked this novella I’m just sad it was so short, I would love to see these two in another book!

When I first started this book I wasn’t sure if I liked it or if I’d be able to finish it. I was kind of confused especially with the four POVs but I figured it out quick. In the four POVs we meet Emma, Julian, Stefan, and Cynthia, we also get to see flashbacks of Cassandra which is Emma’s past life. This book had so many elements I liked I finished it in one sitting. Its like you’re on a ride with all of the characters. Emma was on a mission to find out about her past life and who she really is, Julian is a vampire who has been waiting for Emma, Stefan is a werewolf who has been ordered to kill Emma, and Cynthia is a ghost on a mission to get something back from Emma. Its all so crazy and fast paced and everyone is coming for Emma but the thing is she doesn’t remember everything from her past life as Cassandra, so why does she have so many enemies? I loved the risk Emma took to find out about her past life she was a brave and strong heroine. I also loved the other characters and getting to see their connection in this mystery was amazing. The ending blew me away! It ended in a cliff hanger and the first thought I had when I finished was “Wow! I need the sequel now!” I would recommend this book to my friends and anyone who likes paranormal books!
