Harriet Manners is a geek. She always has been, and she thought she always would be—but when she's discovered by a modeling agent, she leaps at the chance to reinvent herself.

There's only one problem: Harriet is the definition of awkward. Can she transform from geek to chic?

Short and Sweet Review

Geek Girl follows our main character Harriet, a self proclaimed geek. Harriet ends up being discovered by a modeling agency and her whole world changes.

Geek Girl is an easy to read book, I did appreciate the short chapters. Harriet is what she claims a geek but I don’t really see it. She does some quirky things like hiding under tables when she’s uncomfortable and she is likable but I feel like her character tries hard to have the geeky persona that just isn’t her, and by no means is she popular. Harriet and her dad are probably the more excited about this modeling thing whereas her stepmom Annabel is more cautious. I will say Harriet and her dad did a lot of lying while taking Harriet to her first modeling gig, which puts a big strain on some relationships. I found Harriets dad to be immature especially for someone who had the role as a parent and an adult. The only adult who was reasonable and actually thought things through was Annabel. I almost forgot to mention that Harriet has a best friend Natalie who has wanted to be a model since she was a kid so there’s some tension when she finds out that Harriet is one. There’s also a boy who stalks Harriet and I didn’t find it endearing or cute it was just weird, stalking is a serious crime friends. Anyway I think Harriet learns a few lessons in this book which I liked mainly about not losing herself, and that honesty is the best policy.

Overall, this was a cute book and I read it because of the new series on Netflix. I’ll continue reading the series just to see what her next adventure will be and hopefully there’s some major character growth that occurs.
