For all of Kat’s life, it’s just been her and her mother, Jamie—except for the forty-eight hours when Jamie was married and Kat had a stepbrother, Liam. That all ended in an epic divorce, and Kat and Liam haven’t spoken since.

Now Jamie is a jewel thief trying to go straight, but she has one last job—at billionaire Ross Sutherland’s birthday party. And Kat has figured out a way to tag along. What Kat doesn’t know, though, is that there are two surprise guests at the dazzling Sutherland compound that weekend. The last two people she wants to run into. Liam and his father—a serial scammer who has his sights set on Ross Sutherland’s youngest daughter.

Kat and Liam are on a collision course to disaster, and when a Sutherland dies, they realize they might actually be in the killer’s crosshairs themselves. Somehow Kat and Liam are the new targets, and they can’t trust anyone—except each other.

Or can they? Because if there’s one thing both Kat and Liam know, it’s how to lie. They learned from the best.

Short and Sweet Review

When Liam and Kat were kids their parents got married in Vegas, so they were step siblings for two days. After that it has just been Kat and her mom Jamie taking on the world. Jamie is a jewel thief trying to go straight but she has one more job to complete at billionaire Ross Sutherland’s birthday, and Kat tags along. Liam lived with his mom and after her death he’s sent to live with his con artist of a dad, Luke. Luke just happens to be dating Ross’s daughter Annalise, which means Liam is also heading to this extravagant birthday party. There’s a jewel heist or an attempt at one and of course a murder that our characters have to solve before they become targets.

I love McManus’s books and I think this one is different because its not surrounding high school students, Liam and Kat are still teens but this book has a different setting than we’re used to with her books. I bought this book without reading the synopsis, so reading about all of the jewel heist plans I was intrigued but when the murder occurs it felt like familiar territory. Even though Liam and Kat haven’t seen each other since they were kids they were still able to rely and confide in each other and I liked the teamwork that was going on. We also meet Augustus who is Annalise’s nephew and he and Liam spend a lot of time together so Kat and Liams duo becomes a trio. Kats mom gets sick and she isn’t able to complete her mission but Kat intervenes and somehow it makes things worse. We see Kat try to rectify her mistake with the help of Liam and Augustus and then they end up having bigger problems when there’s a murder. I liked the characters in this book, they had each others backs and I feel like Augustus was out comedic relief. The ending was good and everything made sense which I loved.

Overall, McManus writes great books and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. I loved how different this book feels from the others but also familiar. If you’re a fan of McManus, you’ll enjoy this book!
