Seven years ago, Maeve Abenthy lost everything: her world, her father, even her name. Desperate to escape the stain of her father’s crimes, she lives under a fake name, never staying in one place long enough to put down roots.

Then she receives a mysterious letter with four impossible words: Your father was innocent.

To uncover the truth, she poses as an apprentice for the Otherwhere Post, where she’ll be trained in the art of scriptomancy—the dangerous magic that allows couriers to enchant letters and deliver them to other worlds. But looking into her father’s past draws more attention than she’d planned.

Her secretive, infuriatingly handsome mentor knows she’s lying about her identity, and time is running out to convince him to trust her. Worse, she begins to receive threatening letters, warning her to drop her investigation—or else. For Maeve to unravel the mystery of what happened seven years ago, she may have to forfeit her life.

Short and Sweet Review

Seven years ago Maeve’s life was upended, she lost her father, her home, and even the ability to use her name. A monster was unleashed and Maeve’s father was blamed which caused her to become collateral damage. Maeve gets a letter saying that her father was innocent but that letter came years too late to find the sender so to uncover what happened back then Maeve decides to become an apprentice at the Otherwhere Post and learn the art of scriptomancy. Scriptomancy will allow Maeve to learn how to enchant letters and deliver them to other worlds. The only problem is her mentor knows she isn’t who she says she is and someone else at the Otherwhere knows who she is and is sending threats.

The Otherwhere Post, can be described as a very magical world with mystery involved. The world reminded me of Hogwarts like a nice place to go to school and learn scriptomancy which involves enchanting letters and making magic through writing. Maeve is our main character and she’s had a pretty rough go of it she’s been in hiding and she lost her father but the idea that he could be innocent changes everything. Maeve is a tough character she’s been through a lot but she’s persevered, she’s also determined to get information she needs about her dad and nothing else. Maeve already knows a lot about scriptomancy from the things she learned from her dad so when she gets to the otherwhere post she’s pretty advanced. Tristan is a courier for the post and also becomes Maeve’s mentor which he isn’t too pleased about because of something that happened to his last mentee. Tristan is also wary because he knows Maeve isn’t who she says she is. I did like the romance between the two because they had a great banter between them and the chemistry was great, and even though they didn’t know everything about each other Maeve was still able to trust him and turn to him for help. The world building was great and I enjoyed reading about the otherwhere post and the magic system was pretty interesting too. I loved the plot and how everything was worked out, I wasn’t sure how everything was going to turn out but I loved how Maeve was able to uncover everything. There’s also a few side characters Nan and Shea and I loved them too because as much as Maeve didn’t want friends and was pushing them away they still came through for her in a major way.

This was a fun and captivating book! The magic system here was different and it was fun to learn about. Maeve is an amazing character and she does everything in her power to try to clear her father’s name and find out what happened years ago. I would recommend this book for the magic, the characters, and the plot, it’s truly one that will keep you wanting to know how everything is going to unfold.
