A spring night, soft moonlight, five beautiful Prom Queen candidates, dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom—these should be the ingredients for romance. But instead they’re a recipe for terror…

Short and Sweet Review

Spring prom season is here and it’s supposed to be romantic, full of dancing, dresses, and the excitement of being crowned queen. But at Shadyside High, things take a dark turn when five girls are nominated for prom queen and then someone starts killing them off one by one. What should have been a night to celebrate turns into a fight to survive, and no one knows who’s behind it or who will be next.

The Prom Queen by R. L. Stine is classic teen slasher horror dramatic, fast, and honestly a lot of fun.The characters aren’t super likable. The girls are competitive, petty, and full of drama, especially once they’re all competing for the crown. But that actually worked for the story because it made everyone feel suspicious. No one really trusts each other, and that adds to the tension.

The mystery is what really kept me reading. The idea of someone targeting prom queen candidates is a little over the top, but it makes for a fun and suspenseful ride. There are plenty of suspects and twists, and I didn’t guess the reveal, which made it even better. Once things get going, it’s hard to put down. This book really captures that classic Fear Street vibe dramatic teens, high stakes, and lots of suspense. It’s a little cheesy and definitely feels dated in some ways, but that’s part of the charm.

Overall, this was a quick, entertaining read. It’s not deep or emotional just fun, tense, and perfect if you want something that feels like an old school slasher in book form. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
