Amelia Applebaum isn’t in love with Walter Holland. He just happens to be her favorite moderately famous, chaotically bisexual YouTuber. Who she just happened to invite to prom. (But it’s fine. No, for real. If you delete the post, it didn’t happen.)

Okay, maybe her friends are right: She’s slightly parasocially infatuated. But Amelia just knows sparks would fly—if only she could connect with Walter for real.

If only he would host a meet and greet.

If only it were just a short road trip away.

And if only Amelia could talk her best friends into making it the perfect last hurrah before graduation—even her newly single, always-cynical, guitar-toting best friend Natalie.

One thing’s for sure: All roads lead to butterflies.

But what if Amelia’s butterflies aren’t for Walter at all?

Short and Sweet Review

Amelia is a big fan of Walter Holland and his content and she may have even invited him to prom. Amelia’s friends think she has a parasocial relationship with Walter, but Amlia knows if she can just meet him in person that they would hit it off. Walter has a meet and greet and Amelia plans on getting there along with a few friends and a road trip. Amelia has always thought she liked Walter but over the course of the road trip she learns maybe she’s always had her sights set on someone else.

I think I’ve read every book by Becky Albertalli, this book wasn’t my favorite but it wasn’t the worst either. This book follows our main character Amelia on her quest to meet Walter Holland her favorite YouTuber. Her friends think she has a parasocial relationship with him and if you don’t know what that means its a fan but they take it one step forward and feel like anything that happens in that persons life also affects them. When Amelia learns about Walter’s meet and greet she convinces her friends to go on a roadtrip to the meet and greet location. Of the friends going on this roadtrip one of them is Natalie, Amelia feels like she has to protect Natalie from her ex which is honorable but the amount of bad comments Amelia would make would wear on anyones nerves. Throughout the book we get to see YouTube comments, reddit threads, and tweets, and I enjoyed seeing these and how invested people would get into the lives of someone they’re a fan of. I did like when we finally go to meet Walter because he’s just a normal person and because we get to see some characters from past books and that was also nice. When Amelia meets Walter I think she finally comes to the realization that it’s not Walter she wants but Natalie but she’s hoping it’s not too late. I thought this was a cute book and one that could be read in one setting. I do think one of the problems I had with this book is that I didn’t connect with Amelia and sometimes she was dense.

Overall, this was a cute book and I did like the plot. If you’ve read any of Albertalli’s books pick this one up, it’s very on par with her other books. This may not have been my favorite book of hers but it’s one I don’t think should be skipped, also this book is perfect for the summer.
