The first lie made Lily a savior. The second framed Clara for murder. If it weren't for Lily, Clara would still be a total outcast, shunned for her role in an incident that gave her a criminal record and ruined another girl's life. She's spent the past two years trying to escape that night, and ever since Lily Dalton befriended her, she's almost succeeded. After all, Lily's the golden girl of the high school—smart, popular, beloved by all—and as her best friend, Clara's now the bright, hard-working chemistry whiz.
But is Lily really just the good-hearted friend who saved Clara from the past? Because lately Lily has been talking about certain classmates and teachers—about wanting revenge. Do you ever think about making them pay? she asks. How would you do it? Lily has to be joking. At least that's what Clara thinks, until she finds a folder that outlines a deadly plan, including detailed steps and a list of targets in their school.
Shockingly, there's even more to Lily's plan, and it has everything to do with Clara. After all, everyone already knows what she did two years ago. Suddenly all the evidence has been turned against her, and there's no way she can prove her innocence. And the people on that list of targets? One after the next, they're meeting terrible fates, and Clara's looking guiltier by the second. It's up to Clara to find the truth and clear her name, before it's too late.
Short and Sweet Review
Two years ago Clara took part in incident that gave her a criminal record and ended up ruining a friends life. Ever since that night Clara has worked hard to fix her reputation to no avail, until Lily Dalton befriends her. Clara has been a social pariah but now with Lily as her friend things have turned around for the most part. So Clara is shocked when Lily blames Clara for plotting to do a bombing at their school. Clara is in serious trouble but people are doubting her innocence especially after what happened two years ago, now Clara has to prove her innocence and time is not her friend.
Two Perfect Lies, has an interesting synopsis which is why I wanted to read this book. Clara is our main character and a couple of years ago she ended up doing something that caused someone else to get hurt and Clara ended up getting a criminal record. High school kids aren’t the nicest to she’s pretty much been shunned for a while since that incident took place. Lily Dalton is popular and in the eyes of her peers she can do no wrong, so when she befriends Clara it’s a surprise but people begin to accept Clara. At this point Clara and Lily have been friends for more than a few months so when Lily isn’t acting like her normal self Clara can tell something is up. Lily starts talking about people at school she doesn’t like and the next thing you know Clara finds Lily’s folder with a hit list and a plan to bomb some cars in the school parking lot. Clara thinks she has time to go the next morning to report Lily but Lily beat her to it and now everyone thinks Clara is behind the plan.
I found Clara to be an irritating character. She’s apparently super smart, doesn’t make the best decisions but we’re supposed to feel for her because this time she’s innocent but it’s like the whole world is against her. My biggest issue with Clara is that she would spend a lot of time trying to figure out why Lily would do this to her and oh no Lily couldn’t possibly have something against me and its like she just turned you in for domestic terrorism, I didn’t understand how she could be so dense. Anyway she spends most of the book trying to figure out why and then reminiscing about how she was a bad person for what happened two years ago. At some point Clara picks herself up by the boot straps and realizes she needs to get out of her feelings and figure out what Lily’s motive was and how to prove it was really her. Lily is actually pretty smart and it seems like she’s usually one step ahead of Clara. There was also Henry who decides to help Clara and he’s a love interest which I thought was unnecessary because Clara didn’t have time for that she needed to solve this mystery before she got locked up. I will say I liked seeing the game of cat and mouse between Clara and Lily, but when we got to why Lily did what she did her motive for targeting Clara was pretty weak.
Overall, I thought this book was okay. I found Clara to be annoying and she spent a majority of the book grating on my nerves. I stuck around to find out what the motives were and if Clara would be able to clear her name. I personally didn’t enjoy this book because of the characters, I thought the storyline was interesting which is what’s keeping this rating a bit higher. I would still recommend this book because the story is good and maybe others will like the characters better than I did.
