Kylie Galen has never felt normal. One night she finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens—but within hours of arriving, it becomes clear that her fellow campers aren't "troubled." Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic, and live in the normal world. They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought to Shadow Falls for a reason.

As if life wasn't complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek's a half Fae who's determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a brooding werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn't be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart. Even though Kylie is uncertain about everything, she starts to realize that Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

Short and Sweet Review

When Kylie goes to a party and ends up in a jail cell a few hours later, her mom ends up sending her to Shadow Falls a camp. Kylie thinks the camp is for troubled teens but she quickly learns this camp is for supernatural beings. Kylie has been seeing a ghost of a soldier and it’s made things hard for her. Even though Shadow Falls can help her discover who she really is Kylie has a hard time believing that she’s a supernatural. At Shadow Falls, Kylie meets new friends and even has two boys she has her sights on. Everything is up in the air and Kylie learns that maybe Shadow Falls is exactly where she’s meant to be.

This is my second time reading Born at Midnight and I plan on rereading the whole series, I’m not sure why I didn’t review it before but here I am. I went into reading this book not remembering everything that happened but I did remember I wanted all the Kylie and Lucas moments. But let’s rewind, Kylie is a normal teenage girl, she just broke up with her boyfriend and she’s just trying to go out to a party and have a little fun. The only thing that isn’t normal about Kylie is she can see ghosts but only one specific ghost seems to be haunting her. When The party Kylie is at gets shut down by the police and she’s hauled into jail her therapist recommends to her parents Camp Shadow Falls. Kylie thinks she’s there because of the party mishap but really she’s a supernatural she just doesn’t know what kind yet. We see Kylie struggle to come to terms with being at Shadow Falls and doesn’t want to accept that she could be different she just wants to be normal. Kylie meets her roommates Della a vampire and Miranda a witch. I will admit because Kylie hasn’t grown up around supernaturals this whole world is new to her and she can say things that rub the others the wrong way. We also have Derek a fairy and Lucas a werewolf and there’s a bit of a love triangle which is a waste of time because the sparks between Lucas and Kylie are there and there’s no reason to mess with a good thing. Kylie also had Holiday who is one of the counselors and she’s like a big sister to Kylie and is instrumental in helping her figure out how to get her footing. I did enjoy this book and seeing Kylie navigate her life with the new information she was learning about herself. Most of the book is spent getting to know the different characters and learning about the supernatural world and also just seeing Kylie adjust, there was also a subplot of someone trying to sabotage the camp.

Overall, this quickly became one of my favorite series when I first read it and after a second reread it still holds up, the dialogue is a bit cheesy but I can look past that. I’m excited to read and review the rest of the books in the series and get some more Kylie and Lucas moments.
