Two years ago, a misunderstanding between the leaders of Earth and the invading Ilori resulted in the deaths of one-third of the world’s population.

Seventeen-year-old Janelle “Ellie” Baker survives in an Ilori-controlled center in New York City. With humans deemed dangerously volatile because of their initial reaction to the invasion, emotional expression can be grounds for execution. Music, art and books are illegal, but Ellie breaks the rules by keeping a secret library. When a book goes missing, Ellie is terrified that the Ilori will track it back to her and kill her.

Born in a lab, M0Rr1S was raised to be emotionless. When he finds Ellie’s illegal library, he’s duty-bound to deliver her for execution. The trouble is, he finds himself drawn to human music and in desperate need of more. They’re both breaking the rules for the love of art—and Ellie inspires the same feelings in him that music does.

Ellie’s—and humanity’s—fate rests in the hands of an alien she should fear. M0Rr1S has a lot of secrets, but also a potential solution—thousands of miles away. The two embark on a wild and dangerous road trip with a bag of books and their favorite albums, all the while creating a story and a song of their own that just might save them both.

Short and Sweet Review

Two years ago after a misunderstanding between Earth’s leaders and the Ilori’s the Ilori ended up invading Earth and killing one third of the population. Janelle Baker lives in an Ilori controlled center in New York. Having things like art, books, or music are grounds for execution. Janelle has a secret library in the basement but when one of her books goes missing she’s afraid that it’ll get traced back to her and she’ll be killed. Morris is a lab made Ilori and he was made to be emotionless, but when Morris finds Janelles library he knows he has a duty to deliver her to her execution but he can’t bring himself to do it. Unlike most Ilori Morris actually likes music and wants more of it. The two end up going on a cross country road trip with a bag of books and some albums. I truly loved both of the characters Ellie has had a tough life being stuck in a building and having her favorite thing (books!) be considered illegal. Her parents have also become different people her father is under Ilori control and her mother has become an alcoholic. Morris is a lab made but he’s different he feels emotions and he likes music. He is also disliked by many of the other Ilori. During their road trip these two learned a lot about each other and their struggles. I think that the road trip and their love for books and music brought them closer. There were a few twists but they just kept me hooked. The ending was great and in the end I really loved this book!

Nor once dreamed of seeing the wondrous wealth and beauty of Ilara, the kingdom that’s ruled her village for as long as anyone can remember. But when a childhood accident left her with a permanent scar, it became clear that her identical twin sister, Zadie, would likely be chosen to marry the Crown Prince—while Nor remained behind, unable to ever set foot on land.

Then Zadie is gravely injured, and Nor is sent to Ilara in her place. To Nor’s dismay, her future husband, Prince Ceren, is as forbidding and cold as his home—a castle carved into a mountain and devoid of sunlight. And as she grows closer to Ceren’s brother, the charming Prince Talin, Nor uncovers startling truths about a failing royal bloodline, a murdered queen…and a plot to destroy the home she was once so eager to leave.

In order to save her people, Nor must learn to negotiate the treacherous protocols of a court where lies reign and obsession rules. But discovering her own formidable strength may be the one move that costs her everything: the crown, Varenia and Zadie.

Short and Sweet

Princes from Ilara have married maidens from Varenia for generations. Nor has always known that it was either her or her sister, Zadie that would be picked to go to Ilara, but all of that changed when Nor ended up with a scar on her face. When Zadie is injured before she is set to leave for Ilara Nor is picked to go in her place. Everything isn’t as great as Nor imagined it would be, Prince Ceren is cold and off-putting. When Nor becomes closer to Prince Talin she learns a lot of things that she wasn’t aware of before coming to Ilara. Now Nor has to find a way to navigate Ilara and save her people.

Characters

Nor: Nor is our main character and I liked her. Nor was strong and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, she risked taking Zadies place knowing that she could be killed if she was caught. Nor loves her family and the people of Varenia even if they treat her badly, she’s was still willing to do what was right and try to save them.

Zadie: Zadie is Nor’s twin sister and one of the most beautiful girls in Varenia. Zadie is constricted by a lot of rules mainly because her mother doesn’t want Zadie to jeopardize her chance at going to Ilara. Zadie is meek and doesn’t speak out much and thats one thing I didn’t like about her, especially after her accident.

Sami: Sami is Nor and Zadie’s childhood friend and their only friend. Sami is the son of the governor but he doesn’t have much say in what his father does, but Sami does plan on being governor of Varenia one day and wants to rule differently than his father.

Talin: Talin is Ceren’s younger half brother. He may seem kinder than his brother but he may have his own motives, which is why Nor has to watch out for him. Talin is helpful in trying to keep Nor safe from Ceren but Talin isn’t always around because he doesn’t live in the castle with everyone.

Ceren: I thought that Ceren would have some kind of redeeming qualities, but that wasn’t the case at all. You want to feel bad for him because he’s sick, but then he’ll just do something thats awful to counteract you feeling bad. He loves to make people feel uncomfortable and he’s just plain cruel.

Romance

Nor and Ceren: Since Nor took the place of Zadie, Nor is going to become Ceren’s wife. These two didn’t have any chemistry. I don’t think Ceren likes anyone at all. Ceren is cold and cruel and only kept Nor around to use her.

Nor and Talin: Nor has been attracted to Talin since he came to Varenia. Nor didn’t know Talin was a prince until she came to Ilara. Talin is different from his brother in that he’s kind and willing to make Nor feel comfortable.

Zadie and Sami: Zadie and Sami have always been in love, which is why it was hard for both of them when they found out that Zadie was chosen to go to Ilara. This leads to Zadie doing something dangerous, which was a risk because in the end she didn’t know if Sami would even stay with her after what she did.

My Thoughts

~ I thought it was interesting that the people in Varenia are only used to the sea while everyone from Ilara is used to the land. When Nor finally gets to Ilara she learns that adjusting to land isn’t as easy as she thought it would be.

~ I thought Nor’s mother was horrible and was an antagonist herself. Nor’s mother would be the antagonist on Varenia while Ceren would be the antagonist in Ilara. I thought Nor’s mothers attitude was horrible and she obviously favored Zadie because she would be the one chosen to go to Ilara, she also tried to blame Nor for Zadie’s accident.

~ This book started off very slow, I’m sure it was slow to build up the setting and the plot but I don’t think it really helped build up the plot. When we finally got to the plot and some action the book was basically over.

~ Nor decides that while she’s in Ilara she’ll do some spying and try to report back to Sami by meeting him at a market.

~ In Ilara it’s the women who are supposed to be in charge but since there hasn’t been any female heirs and the queens have died before their husbands, the kings have ruled.

~ In Varenia there are pink pearls that can be traded in for currency and these pearls also have healing properties, which is why Ceren is interested in learning more about them and is trying to keep them for himself.

~ While in Ilara Nor is confined to the castle and isn’t allowed to leave unless Ceren gives her permission.

~In the castle Nor makes an alliance with Melina, an older woman who also came from Varenia. Nor has to be careful when meeting with Melina because Ceren doesn’t like her.

~ Nor learns a lot about things that have happened in the past and Ceren’s future plans which will affect the people in Varenia.

~ I thought the ending was okay it could have been better I think if the pace of the book was a little faster and the plot didn’t occur towards the end of the book there could have been more added that would have made the book more exciting.

Overall

The book ended on a cliffhanger and I’m interested to see what will happen next with Nor especially because of everything that happened in the end. I liked this book but I thought that the pacing was slow and there wasn’t much that happened until the end.

On the quest to find her missing mother, prim and proper Enne Salta became reluctant allies with Levi Glaisyer, the city’s most famous con man. Saving his life in the Shadow Game forced Enne to assume the identity of Séance, a mysterious underworld figure. Now, with the Chancellor of the Republic dead and bounties on both their heads, she and Levi must play a dangerous game of crime and politics…with the very fate of New Reynes at stake.

Thirsting for his freedom and the chance to build an empire, Levi enters an unlikely partnership with the estranged son of mafia donna Vianca Augustine. Meanwhile, Enne remains trapped by Vianca’s binding oath, playing the roles of both darling lady and cunning street lord, unsure which side of herself reflects the truth.

As Enne and Levi walk a path of unimaginable wealth and opportunity, new relationships and deadly secrets could quickly lead them into ruin. And when unforeseen players enter the game, they must each make an impossible choice: sacrifice everything they’ve earned in order to survive...

Or die as legends.

Short and Sweet

After the events of the Shadow game both Levi and Enne are wanted criminals. Levi partners with Harrison Augustine to take down his mother Vianca, while Enne plays the part of a lady by day and street lord by night. Now both of them have to make decisions that will either help them or in the long run set them back and it could be the end.

Characters

Levi: Levi Levi Levi, well he’s still the Iron lord but something about him in this book was off putting. I think he was too concerned about helping Harrison that he forgot to consider the feelings of those around him. Levi is still good at making plans and usually gets himself out of tough situations. Oh and because Levi is working with Harrison he has to keep it on the down low because if Vianca found out Levi was working with her son it would be the end of him and the legacy he’s trying to create.

Enne: Enne is trying to figure herself out in this book, is she still the proper lady from Bellamy or has New Reynes made her a Lord? Enne goes by the name Seance when she’s dealing with the other gangs or wants to be inconspicuous. I liked Enne a lot in this book she’s a lot tougher and she does have to make ethical choices in this book.

Jac: Jac is still Levi’s second and best friend but their relationship in this book is strained and it made me sad because they’re best friends. Jac is on his own mission to find out who is going to be the next person to inherit the Torren empire and its hard for him because Jac used to be addicted to a drug that is distributed by the Torrens. So now that he’s in their territory he has to fight the urges to use lullaby. Jac also meets Sophia Torren who is determined to take the empire down.

Lola: Lola is Enne’s second and one of her best friends. Lola is around in this book she helps Enne learn the history of the north side and she’s there to give advice, but I didn’t feel like she was there as much as I wanted her to be. Lola is still her grumpy self but deep down she cares about those closest to her.

Romance

Levi and Enne: Well these two obviously like each other but the relationship in this book wasn’t the best. Levi tried to keep secrets from Enne because he thought it would be safer incase Vianca found something out. They fought a lot in this book and sometimes went weeks without talking but they would meet up to discuss business.

Jac and Sophia: Jac meets Sophia when he’s trying to find out who is going to take over the Torren empire, and it so happens that Sophia is a Torren. Jac ends up staying to help Sophia take down her half-siblings so they can burn the Torren empire to the ground. Jac likes Sophia but she’s keeping a few secrets from him which makes it hard for him to trust her.

Lola and Tock: So Tock is a new iron and I guess Levi’s third, anyway Lola and Tock meet at a party and there was chemistry and yeah. We don’t see a lot of their encounters but they’re usually together when they can be.

My Thoughts

~ There’s a lot going on in this book, Levi is working with Harrison, Vianca is using the omertà to have Enne attend political parties for her. Harrison is running against Worner Prescott which is the man her mother is supporting. It’s all very messy, Levi is supporting Harrison and hoping he wins because Harrison will kill Vianca which will break the omertà.

~ By the way there’s an all girl gang called the Spirits! Enne made a girl gang you guys and they’re awesome! At first it just started with Enne and Lola and then they recruited Grace and in the end theres more than 10 all together. Most of the girls have the split talent to count which is helpful for the plans that Enne and Levi have.

~ We meet all of the gangs from the north side in this book and let me just say they’re all interesting in their own ways and obviously not the most trusting people.

~ We get to read from Levi, Enne, and Jac’s POV and I will say that I enjoyed Enne’s the most.

~ There’s always been talk that Vianca had a third person under her omertà and we finally get to see who that person is ready for revenge.

~ There’s a lot of politics involved in this book and because of that there’s a lot of secrets and betrayal going on. Everyone has something to lose this time around.

Overall

This was a solid sequel but when I think about it I did enjoy Ace of Shades a little more, mainly because this one had me worrying about the characters at every turn. The ending was a cliffhanger and now I need the third book in my hands now just to see how everything ends! I really do love this series its so different and I love New Reynes and its fun to lose myself in this world, so definitely read check out the series!!!

You’d think being the new girl in a tiny town would equal one very boring senior year. But if you’re me—Annie Marck, alias Cleves—and you accidentally transform into teenage royalty by entering Lancaster High on the arm of the king himself? Life becomes the exact opposite of boring.

Henry has it all: he’s the jock, the genius and the brooding bad boy all in one. Which sort of explains why he’s on his sixth girlfriend in two years.

What it doesn’t explain is why two of them—two of us—are dead.

My best friend thinks it’s Henry’s fault, which is obviously ridiculous. My nemesis says we shouldn’t talk about it, which is straight-up sketchy. But as the resident nosy new girl, I’m determined to find out what really happened to Lancaster’s dead queens…ideally before history repeats itself.

Short and Sweet

Everyone knows about the infamous King Henry VII and his six wives, but in this retelling we meet Annie aka Cleves girlfriend number four and Henry’s best friend. But things start to get suspicious when Henry is on his sixth girlfriend in six months and two of his exes are dead. Cleves’ best friend thinks Henry is behind it all and now all they have to do is prove it before his sixth girlfriend ends up dead too.

Characters

Annie (Cleves): Our main character and narrator. Cleves who got her nickname because she’s from Cleveland moves to Lancaster where she’s best friends with Henry which by association makes her popular. Cleves is pretty funny and sarcastic she knows what she wants and she wants the editor in chef position for the school paper. One thing Cleves doesn’t like is feeling like she’s being censored. One thing about Cleves is that she’s very indecisive and doesn’t know whether she should take Henry’s side or Parker’s.

Henry: Henry is a popular football player but he’s also a serial dater and for some reason he’s already on girlfriend number six in six months which he doesn’t find strange at all. Like the actually Henry VII I found this Henry very accurate considering that this book takes place during modern times. Henry was interesting he liked to pull pranks on his girlfriends and that was mainly because he thought that they were up to something. Henry is also dealing with a lot he has a leg injury which is holding him back and he feels like he’s not good enough in his fathers eyes.

Parker: Parker is one of Cleves’ best friends. She’s organized practical and hmm a little vengeful when she feels like someone is messing with her friends, she also has a lot of bite to her and she can be pretty mean. I actually liked Parkers character she isn’t what you’d expect she’s dealt with a lot after she lost her boyfriend George in the explosion (more on that later), now Parkers main goal is to keep those closest around her safe and while doing that she can come off as paranoid.

Romance

~ I have kindly listed each girlfriend in their respective order of 1-6

Henry and Lina: Lina is Henry’s first girlfriend and she is described as an overachiever, who also that she shows grace when put in pressure situations. When Henry first starts talking about Lina all he ever says is that she’s great and the most amazing person ever but eventually he ends up leaving her for Anna.

Henry and Anna: Anna is described as an overly ambitious Francophile and people weren’t the biggest fan of her because they thought she stole Henry away from Lina, and this was also a big thing in the book because people were either team Lina or team Anna. The big thing that happened in this relationship occurred at prom where there was an explosion that killed Anna and her brother George. Anna is blamed for this explosion and people consider her a murderer and say that her motive for causing the explosion was to cover up that she may have been cheating on Henry.

Henry and Jane: This one was an interesting relationship mainly because whenever Cleves talks about Jane all she can say is that Jane was boring and all she did was volunteer at the hospital but I don’t know how boring she could have been because Henry seemed to like her a lot.

Henry and Cleves: This is probably the shortest relationship of them all and because of that these two like to act like it never even happened. Henry and Cleves met at a summer camp and hit it off and became best friends and kept in touch so when she moved closer to him they were both happy about it. These two only start dating because someone told Henry he should ask Cleves out because they seemed like they would work, and even though they broke up they continued being best friends, and these two broke up because Henry started to like Katie.

Henry and Katie: Katie was a cheerleader Henry was a football player this was a match made in popular kid heaven. I liked Katie she was sweet and she’s dealt with a lot in the past and has a reputation for sleeping around. Katie was trying to work past her issues and I liked how she always tried to stay positive. Sadly, like her cousin Anna, Katie met her demise.

Henry and Cat: Cat is the editor in chief of the school paper and the Vice President of the debate club. This relationship was strange mainly because it seemed like Henry wouldn’t date someone like Cat which is exactly way she went for him, she knew he liked dating different kinds of girls. Cat was smart and at first I didn’t like her but she grew on me. Honestly she’s just really really really smart which you’ll notice when you read the book.

Quotes

~ “Cheating sets him off because it’s an insult and a betrayal. As long as I don’t cheat, I’m safe.”

My Thoughts

~ I’m going to be honest, the first half of this book was hard to get through. I don’t know if it was because of it going to the past and then back to the present but it just wasn’t good. And the plot doesn’t really take effect until the second half of the book anyway when Parker tells Cleves about her thoughts on Henry, the first half was mainly just about girlfriends 1-4 and Henry’s history with them.

~ I liked the girl power thing going on in this book I thought it was amazing how they all banded together because they realized no one else could get hurt.

~ What I loved the most was that the girlfriends and some of the things that happened to them corresponds to their historical counterparts. There were a lot of Easter eggs in this book and it was great.

~ I liked the mystery aspect of the book when we have to question if Anna and Katie’s deaths were accidents or if something sinister actually happened. So to figure this out and put up theories Cleves makes a blog called the Dead Queens Club.

~ For a retelling this book was very well written each character was their own person and it made me feel for each of them. Each character is so vivid and add something to the story.

~ The best part was the ending it was dramatic and tense but it was amazing and I loved it and I thought it ended perfectly.

Overall

I thought this book was great it was a good retelling and I liked how the history was weaved throughout. Capin did a great job giving each character their own personality and making each of them entertaining and captivating. The only thing that did bother me like I mentioned before was the first half of the book which I did find somewhat boring but after that everything was smooth sailing and I couldn’t put the book down. Definitely read this book if you like historical retellings with a sassy and snarky main character.
