Short and Sweet Review
Veronique has the power to control the wind and after the death of her parents she was raised by her grandmother, Mawmaw. Veronique has been warned by her Mawmaw to keep her powers a secret. When Mawmaw becomes sick she decides to let Veroniques aunt take her in, but in a city like New Orleans Veronique begins to lose control of her powers. Veronique has to learn to harness her powers and also learn what Mawmaw has been trying to keep her safe from all of these years.
Tempest was an intriguing book full of secrets that are uncovered throughout. Our main character Veronique grew up in rural Louisiana with her grandma where she learned she needed to keep her powers under wraps. When Veronique learns her Mawmaw is sick and she’s moving in with her aunt and her family in New Orleans she’s scared and rightly so she’s been sheltered most of her life. Her aunt Eve is a bit strict and she’s the only one who knows about Veroniques powers. Veronique ends up hitting it off with her cousin Zaza who’s around the same age. Zaza has lived in the city her whole life so she’s used to going out and having fun and now she wants to bring Veronique along for the fun. Veronique is experiencing new things and because of this her powers are starting to become more noticeable. Veronique is told she needs to do a better job of hiding them because there’s people who are after her because of her powers and they’ll do anything to find her. We have a character Kez, who works at Zaza’s dads bookshop and he seems to be more observant than most and he can tell Veronique has powers from the moment he meets her, he offers to help her and we end up learning what his motives are, I do wish we got to see more of him towards the end of the book. Veronique also has a love interest named Tyree who she meets on the bus and they were cute, I wouldn’t say the relationship was too intense but he was very open and supportive and I enjoyed that. I will say we see a lot of Veronique getting accustomed to her new life and learning how to get better control of her powers and then we learn about all of the secrets and then we have the big ending. I will say the ending wasn’t a big bang because we knew it was going to happen but I still enjoyed it. I do wish we got to see some of the other characters who were vital to Veronique in the epilogue.
Overall, this was a good book and it was entertaining. The pacing wasn’t too fast or slow and watching Veronique learn about her new environment and herself was something that I enjoyed. I would recommend this book to readers.
