Hope Jackson is dead. Everyone is convinced she took her own life, but Liv, one of Hope’s best friends, isn’t so sure. Hope’s boyfriend, Brendan, was always jealous and possessive, and his alibi doesn’t really check out. But in the town’s eyes, Hope was just some nobody who was going to drag down golden boy Brendan.

So with the help of Hope’s other two best friends, Kizzie and Sherie, Liv is determined to bring Brendan’s actions to light. Together, they vow to make him pay.

But as their plans keep escalating, Liv begins to have second thoughts—especially as she’s realizing that Brendan may not be the only one with the motive or opportunity to kill Hope. Is Liv really getting justice for Hope, or is she just helping one of Hope’s so-called friends cover up their lies?

Short and Sweet Review

Liv’s best friend Hope recently died and everyone thinks Hope took her own life but Liv isn’t so sure. Around the time of Hope’s death people suspected her boyfriend Brendan of being jealous and controlling but in the end he was never charged with anything. Liv enlists the help of Hope’s two other best friends Kizzy and Sherie to help her learn the truth about Hopes death and if Brendan had any involvement. Over the course of the night, the girl’s plans keep escalating and they learn Brendan may not have been the only one who wanted Hope dead.

This is a hard book for me to review, I liked some elements of it and others not so much. Hope is a character we don’t meet because this book is set after she has already died but from flashbacks she seems like someone who was depressed and also in a toxic relationship. Liv was her best friend and she wants to know the truth about Hopes death, so she asks for Kizzy and Sheries help to do so. The three girls basically kidnap him and try to keep him hostage but their plans go awry when two other guys show up and they end up locked in a smart house together after a storm hits. Lots of truths are exposed during their time together but it also shows us we don’t know who to believe because everyones a liar and you don’t really know who to trust and even Liv is an unreliable narrator. Oddly, its not enough to figure out what happened to Hope but some of the other characters end up being killed as well so now we’re locked in a house getting bits and pieces about Hopes death and having our other suspects killed off as well. The author has a note at the front of the book, which tells us the book is about believing black woman and touches on mental health in the black community, and that’s good and well but I personally lost that the more I got into the book.

Overall, I’m still not sure what to make of this book, I think the ending is what really throws me off. I like the synopsis and how things played out for the most part but the puzzle pieces coming together it just feels like a piece doesn’t fit. I don’t think this book was for me but I would still recommend it.
