When Devi, Lizzie, and Jayne get snowed in and stranded at the grand Bramble Estate, home of the wealthy Vanforte family, they find themselves accidentally right in the middle of a murder plot. The matriarch, Emily Vanforte, has been poisoned at her own dinner party, and whoever did it is still on the loose.
The killer could only be one of four people: Charles, Emily's notorious politician husband; Lottie their seemingly perfect teenage daughter; Douglas, Lottie's good-for-nothing boyfriend; and Tate, Charle's nephew who is more than meets the eye.
Cut off from help, confined in an isolated house with a killer, and surrounded by suspects, the girls decide to solve the mystery before one of them becomes the next victim. But no one is safe with knives hidden under the floorboards, vanishing guns, and secret passages in the walls. And in a house full of liars, how will they ever discover the truth in time?
Short and Sweet Review
Devi, Lizzie, and Jayne’s fates intertwine when they get stuck at an estate when a snow storm hits. The estate is owned by the Vanforte family. Emily Vanforte allows each girl to stay because of the storm the only thing the girls weren’t expecting was for Emily to be poisoned and killed at a family dinner. Everyone is stuck in the house because of the storm and that means the killer is in the house too. The other four people in the house are Charles, Charlotte, Douglas, and Tate. The girls decide they need to solve the murder before one of them is next but in this house you don’t know what to expect.
Catch Your Death, will have you hooked from the very beginning. We have the POV of our three main characters Devi, Jayne, and Lizzie, the girls don’t know each other but somehow they all ended up at the estate. Devi got lost, Lizzie was making a delivery, and Jayne actually works there. Each girl is different, Devi was more outspoken but she was also the most determined to solve the mystery, she also was comedic relief. Lizzie was more timid and anxious, while Jayne kept things more close to the vest but she was also the one who had the most information about the house and the others in it. I love how the story unfolded, we have chapters of the police interrogation and further into the book we get to see chapters of the past and at that point there was a big plot twist and it really made things come together and I wanted to know where things would go from there. I will say we didn’t know much about Emily except for the fact that she was the one bringing in the money, and she wanted people to know that she was on top and because of the at it would seem that her family had a lot of motive to commit the crime. Devi, Jayne, and Lizzie are all basically outsiders looking in so they think each family member is a suspect and it doesn’t help that Emily was going to expose a secret about one of the suspects. Charles was Emily’s husband and a politician and he seems to have a lot of secrets he’s also very self serving. Charlotte is Emily and Charles’s daughter and she brought her boyfriend Douglas for the dinner. Tate is Charles’s nephew and he’s also hanging around the estate. Each character has a motive and it was interesting to learn why each one of them could have wanted Emily dead. One of my favorite things about this book was that the characters were snowed in and they’re searching for clues and they learn that there’s hidden passageways in this house, they find guns, and hidden knives, the whole place is a mystery. The ending was good and I was satisfied with how everything played out.
Overall, I think this was a fun mystery book. We get three distinct characters and a well written mystery from start to finish. I would recommend this book for the plot and all the twists and turns involved.
