The longing of dreams draws the dead, and this city holds many dreams.
After a supernatural show down with a serial killer, Evie O'Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. With her uncanny ability to read people's secrets, she's become a media darling and earned the title "America's Sweetheart Seer." Everyone's in love with the city's newest It Girl... everyone except the other Diviners.
Piano-playing Henry Dubois and Chinatown resident Ling Chan are two Diviners struggling to keep their powers a secret--for they can walk in dreams. And while Evie is living the high life, victims of a mysterious sleeping sickness are turning up across New York City.
As Henry searches for a lost love and Ling strives to succeed in a world that shuns her, a malevolent force infects their dreams. And at the edges of it all lurks a man in a stovepipe hat who has plans that extend farther than anyone can guess... As the sickness spreads, can the Diviners descend into the dreamworld to save the city?
Short and Sweet Review
Lair of Dreams picks up soon after where The Diviners left off. Now that people know that diviners exist things are different. Evie is living it up at different hotels throwing parties and she’s also on a radio show using her gifts to help people. Not all of the diviners are happy about what Evie did and are very happy living life on the down low. We have Ling and Henry who can dream walk and the focus of this book is mainly on them. There’s something called the sleeping sickness that is taking people in their dreams and Henry and Ling have to be careful while they’re going around in dreams. Henry wants to find his love from New Orleans and feels he can do it in the dream world and he learns that with Ling they’re stronger together but there’s something sinister in this dream world.
We have so many characters in this book but it works. Evie who can read an objects past is helping Sam find his mother in this book and they’re also faking a romance to appease the radio station and get it more publicity. Ling lives in Chinatown and she’s able to speak with the dead in the dream world and sometimes gets paid for her services. Ling is crippled but in the dream world she’s able to do things that she hasn’t been for a while which is why she prefers it there. Theta and Memphis are still seeing each other and he’s able to heal but hasn’t used his powers and Theta is keeping her power of making fire a secret. Like I said theres a lot going on but it’s all relatively easy to follow. I enjoyed seeing Henry and Ling meet up in the dream world because at this point they’re the only diviners working together and I do like the friendship that they form. It was interesting to see the dream world because Henry and Ling not only learn that they can walk in dreams but they can also manipulate things in the dreams. WE also meet another character in the world and that’s when the puzzle pieces begin to come together. When I went into this book I was expecting another murder spree like in the first book but I found myself enjoying seeing this story come together. The end was also my favorite when we get to see all of our diviners come together and work as a team it was like the avengers coming together.
Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely. Even though these books are long once you really get into them it’s hard to put down as you want to know what’s going to happen next. Now that all the diviners know each other I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
