The Dark has been waiting for far too long, and it won't stay hidden any longer.

Something is wrong in Snakebite, Oregon. Teenagers are disappearing, some turning up dead, the weather isn’t normal, and all fingers seem to point to TV’s most popular ghost hunters who have just returned to town. Logan Ortiz-Woodley, daughter of TV's ParaSpectors, has never been to Snakebite before, but the moment she and her dads arrive, she starts to get the feeling that there's more secrets buried here than they originally let on.

Ashley Barton’s boyfriend was the first teen to go missing, and she’s felt his presence ever since. But now that the Ortiz-Woodleys are in town, his ghost is following her and the only person Ashley can trust is the mysterious Logan. When Ashley and Logan team up to figure out who—or what—is haunting Snakebite, their investigation reveals truths about the town, their families, and themselves that neither of them are ready for. As the danger intensifies, they realize that their growing feelings for each other could be a light in the darkness.

Short and Sweet Review

Logan’s dads ghost hunters on the show ParaSpectors. When Logan’s dad Brandon goes back home to Snakebite, Oregon, things start to go wrong teenagers start disappearing and some even end up dead. Everyone starts to suspect its Logan and her dads but Logan is ready to figure out what’s really going on and she learns that some secrets are better left buried.

Ashley’s boyfriend was one of the first teens to go missing and ever since then she can feel his presence. Because Logan’s dads are well known ghost hunters Ashley decides to team up with her to figure out what is going on in Snakebite.

This book is everything you want when it comes to books about ghost, small towns, and weird vibes. The people in Snakebite definitely have that small town mentality where they really look down on outsiders and that’s exactly what Logan and her dads are. But Brandon and Alejo grew up in Snakebite they just happened to leave, but they weren’t welcomed back with open arms, honestly if these people had pitchforks I’m sure they would have used them. Logan is a strong and determined character, she may have a rocky relationship with Brandon but she’ll still defend him and Alejo’s innocence. Logan has a dry sarcastic sense of humor and if you like that you’ll love her. Logan and Brandon’s rocky relationship gets explored and I liked how it gets resolved. Ashley and Logan start working together and it was an interesting pairing because Logan doesn’t care what people think but Ashley does and that makes her want to hide the fact that she’s working with Logan, also her friends weren’t very supportive and they wouldn’t hear her out. Ashley and Logan find a lot secrets about both of their families and something called the Dark which is a very interesting entity. Logan, Ashely, and The Dark had POVs and it was great because Logan and Ashley are going through different things throughout the book and seeing what The Dark is doing adds to the creepy tone of the book.

If you like creepy ghost books this one is for you! I loved the characters and seeing how their investigation progressed. There was a lot of things that were uncovered that’ll leave you wanting more and the ending was satisfying.

Cat lives in her high school. She never leaves, and for a long time her school has provided her with everything she needs. But now things are changing. The hallways contract and expand along with the school’s breathing, and the showers in the bathroom run a bloody red. Cat’s best friend is slowly turning into cardboard, and instead of a face, Cat has a cat mask made of her own hardened flesh.

Cat doesn’t remember why she is trapped in her school or why half of them—Cat included—are slowly transforming. Escaping has always been the one impossibility in her school’s upside-down world. But to save herself from the eventual self-destruction all the students face, Cat must find the way out. And to do that, she’ll have to remember what put her there in the first place.

Short and Sweet Review

Let me start of with saying this was one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read and I’m still not sure if it was good weird or bad weird. I feel like when people say their on an acid trip that’s what reading this book was like.

Our main character Cat lives in her high school she doesn’t remember how or why that is. Cat isn’t the only one who lives in the high school there are other students and they’re separated based on whether they still look normal or have been “changed.” When students are being murdered Cat takes it upon herself to figure out who’s killing the other students and stop them.

Honestly I don’t even know what was happening it was that trippy. The book goes back and forth between past and present so we can see what Cats life was like before she was stuck in the school and changed. In the present we see that the school is a living entity and some of the students had strange changes or powers. The book was okay I just don’t think it worked, maybe it would have been better if they were trapped in the school and it was the school that was alive and murderous but having the students have cardboard boxes and tentacles for arms just wasn’t it. Overall this was a fast read and definitely one of the strangest books I’ve read this year.

After a party, four teens are in a hit-and-run accident that results in a young boy's death. Unable to deal with the consequences, they leave the body behind, and make an anonymous phone call to the police, tipping them off. The group makes a secret pact to bury the memory of that night and never speak of it again, but when one of the girls receives a note that reads "I know what you did last summer," their dark lie is unearthed. With twists and turns at every corner, they'll have to fight to stay steps ahead of a killer determined to make them pay.

Julie, Ray, Helen, and Barry used to be close friends until the hit in run accident, Julie decides to cut ties with everyone. That was last summer and now Julie is getting messages in the mail suggesting that someone else knows about the accident, which is when she decides to let everyone else in the group know what’s going on. No one else thinks that it’s a big deal until they all start getting threatening messages, but no one goes to the police because that’ll just get them in trouble for what happened last summer.

This book was boring and the characters don’t make it any better. Helen is like the prom queen super pretty only thinks about herself and follows Barry around like a puppy dog. Barry is your basic jock, he likes to think of himself as an alpha male and he’s an awful person in general. The only two sensible people in this book are Julie and Ray and not by a long shot. We just see the characters get notes, one ends up getting seriously hurt and that’s when everyone starts to actually care, besides Julie because she was already thinking clearly. Anyway Julie is the only one who wants to figure out who knows, and when we do find out who it is it’s not surprising. Honestly this was such a lackluster book, I didn’t connect to the characters and it was just predictable and dull.

Seventeen-year-old film noir fan Neve Lanier is a girl who just wants to be seen, but doesn’t really fit in anywhere. When Neve is betrayed by her best friend, Yasmin, at the end of the school year, she heads off to a girl’s empowerment camp feeling like no one will ever love her again. So when she grabs the attention of the beautiful, charismatic Diane, she falls right under her spell, and may accidentally promise to murder Diane’s predatory step-brother, Javier, in exchange for Diane murdering Yasmin. But that was just a joke…right?

Wrong. When Yasmin turns up dead, Diane comes calling, attempting to blackmail Neve into murdering Javier. Stalling for time, Neve pretends to go along with Diane’s plan until she can find a way out that doesn't involve homicide. But as she gets to know Javier – and falls for him – she realizes that everything Diane told her is a lie. Even worse, she discovers that Yasmin probably wasn't Diane's first victim. And unless Neve can stop her, she won't be the last.

Short and Sweet Review

Neve doesn’t really fit in anywhere, she has an interesting sense of style as a fan of noir films and after being betrayed by her best friend Yasmin Neve is really on the outs. Neve’s parents decide to send her to an empowerment camp for the summer. Which is where Neve meets Diane. Diane gives Neve attention and that’s basically how Neve falls under her spell. Neve tells Diane about Yasmin and Diane offers to kill Yasmin if Neve kills Dianes brother, Javier. Neve agrees thinking its a joke but once camp ends Neve learns that Yasmin has been murdered. Neve is the number one suspect and the only way to get Diane to back off is for Neve to uphold her end of the deal and kill Javier.

This book was interesting, Neve was an okay character. After Yasmin betrayed her she really didn’t have any friends. So when Diane gave her attention she just gravitated towards her. The problem here was that the other girls at the camp knew that something was off about Diane and when they tried to warn Neve she didn’t take them seriously and just brushed them off. Diane was crazy she was sweet at the camp but after that you could really see the crazy showing. Neve ends up meeting Javier and thinking that he’s alright and can be trusted. I think the problem with Neve is that once someone shows her attention she thinks they’re trustworthy. This was a game of cat and mouse and Neve was an okay player, I feel like she should have been a better judge of character because she ended up having to ask a girl from camp, Inara for help. If I was Inara I wouldn’t of helped Neve especially after the way she talked to her. Anyway this was an okay book the ending was a hot mess but otherwise the rest was tolerable. It wasn’t my favorite book by this author but it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve read either.

The nightmare is just beginning.

Ricky Desmond has been through this all before. If he could just get through to his mother, he could convince her that he doesn’t belong at Brookline. From the man who thinks he can fly to the woman who killed her husband, the other patients are nothing like him; all he did was lose his temper just a little bit, just the once. But when Ricky is selected by the sinister Warden Crawford for a very special program—a program that the warden claims will not cure him but perfect him—Ricky realizes that he may not be able to wait for his mom a second longer. With the help of a sympathetic nurse and a fellow patient, Ricky needs to escape now.

Short and Sweet Review

Brookline isn’t the first place Ricky’s parents have sent him to try to fix him, but Ricky knows something isn’t right with Brookline. He’s seeing and hearing things, and now the Warden has taken a special interest in him, and even chose Ricky for a special program. Ricky realizes that he needs to get out of Brookline he just doesn’t know how he’s going to do it.

Escape from Asylum takes place before the trilogy and we actually get to see Warden Crawford at work. Ricky is placed into Brookline after being caught with a boy and attacking his stepfather. Ricky becomes friends with another patient Kay, and he’s not sure if he can trust nurse Ash, she makes it seem like she’s playing both sides. I liked this story, I’ve already read the other three books in the series and this book sheds a light on what the asylum was like when it was open. It was interesting seeing Ricky figure out things by snooping around, it was unfortunate that he even ended up at the asylum in the first place. Ricky and Kay were good characters, I wish we saw more of Kay though, but they were kept apart once the warden realized that they were friends. The second part of the book was great, we see more of the mystery unfolding and what the warden has planned.

Overall this was a good book, it can be read as a standalone or a prequel. I honestly love this series and the pictures that are included really add to the creepy vibe.

Tress Montor murdered Felicity Turnado—but she might not have to live with the guilt for long. With an infected arm held together by duct tape, the panther who clawed her open on the loose, and the whole town on the hunt for the lost homecoming queen, the odds are stacked against Tress. As her mind slides deeper into delirium, Tress is haunted by the growing sound of Felicity’s heartbeat pulsing from the “best friend” charm around her fevered neck.

Ribbit Usher has been a punchline his whole life—from his nickname to his latest turn as the unwitting star of a humiliating viral video. In the past he’s willingly played the fool, but now it’s time to fulfill his destiny. That means saving the girl, so that Felicity can take her place at his side and Ribbit can exact revenge on all who have done him wrong—which includes his cousin, Tress. Ribbit is held by a pact he made with his mother long ago, a pact that must be delivered upon in four days.

With time ticking down and an enemy she considers a friend lurking in the shadows, Tress’s grip on reality is failing. Can she keep both mind and body together long enough to finally find out what happened to her parents?

The Last Laugh picks up right where the Initial Insult left off. Tress just finished leaving Felicity behind a brick wall and walked away leaving her to die. But now Tress is starting to feel guilty but if the guilt doesn’t eat away at her, the infection in her arm will. The only thing Tress cares about before the infection takes her is finding out what happened to her parents. Ribbit Usher Tress’s cousin has been in a humiliating video that gives him his 15 minutes of fame but he’s tired of being the butt of everyones jokes. Ribbit plans on finding Felicity and having her be his and then exacting on everyone who has done him wrong including Tress.

In the Last Laugh we get the POVs of Tress, Ribbit, and Rue (the orangutan). I liked Tress’s POV the most the girl is on a mission and some how not dead even with the infection in her arm giving her fevers and hallucinations. Ribbit on the other hand is a momma’s boy he’ll do anything to please her and he plans on doing exactly that in four days. Honestly Ribbit is messed up in the head he may not show it often but the kid is off his rocker. Rue’s POV I feel like was unnecessary it just felt like nonsense.

I enjoyed this book more than the first book mainly because there’s a lot more at stake for the characters. Tress is doing a little digging on what happened to her parents and she learns more than she bargained for and there’s still the panther running around town that she has to take care of. Ribbit plans on doing something he should have done years ago. This book was just crazy but it worked and it added a level of intensity. I didn’t like Tress in the first book but in this one I was definitely rooting for her.

The Last Laugh was hard to put down and it delivered. I didn’t know what to expect from this sequel but it was amazing! Check out this duology if you’re into darker YA reads!

No matter how different best friends Adelle and Connie are, one thing they’ve always had in common is their love of a little-known gothic romance novel called Moira. So when the girls are tempted by a mysterious man to enter the world of the book, they hardly suspect it will work. But suddenly they are in the world of Moira, living among characters they’ve obsessed about for years.

Except…all is not how they remembered it. The world has been turned upside down: The lavish balls and star-crossed love affairs are now interlaced with unspeakable horrors. The girls realize that something dark is lurking behind their foray into fiction—and they will have to rewrite their own arcs if they hope to escape this nightmare with their lives.

Short and Sweet Review

Best friends Adelle and Connie both love a little known historic, gothic romance novel by the name Moira. When the two are told by a man that her can transport them into the book Adelle jumps at the chance but Connie is more suspicious, but soon the girls are in the book that they’ve been obsessing over for years. Unfortunately the book is nothing like they imagined. Now the girls have to find a way to survive in this nightmarish world and make it back to their own.

Adelle and Connie love this book Moira so when this guy who works in a shop they’ve been going to for a while says he can put them in the book they say yes not thinking it’ll work. In the book the girls are separated Adelle actually ends up meeting the main characters but they’re so much different than the ones she pictured in her head. Connie ends up with the side characters a group called the Penny-Farthings. Adelle and Connie quickly realize that the world they’re in isn’t one they want to be in. There’s also some creature in the wharf that takes sleep walking people and is using them for whatever reason.

The characters in the book were interesting, they obviously weren’t how Connie and Adelle imagined them but my favorites were Orla, Caid, and Missi. These were characters that the girls originally brushed off but ended up being the best characters. Moira and Severin on the other hand were awful. There were some weird things going on in this book and most of it could be attributed to the girls being in a world they shouldn’t have been in.

I liked Connie and Adelle, Adelle was basically living in a fantasy world for the first couple of chapters she was in the book because she didn’t know what was going on outside. Connie was helping the Penny-Farthings fight and get supplies. I did like how all of the characters got together to help try to stop the monster in the wharf from completing his goal, and trying to help the girls get back to their own time. I will say I’m still a little confused on what happened in the end.

The premise was good I think that some more information about the thing in the wharf and what the dream city is would have made this book even better. I liked the horror vibes and just seeing what would happen next. I loved seeing Connie and Adelle navigate their way through a world they thought they knew. It just makes you wonder what it would be like inside your favorite book.

Her name is unimportant.

All you must know is that today she will become one of the four saints of Haven. The elders will mark her and place the red hood on her head. With her sisters, she will stand against the evil power that lives beneath the black mountain—an evil which has already killed nine of her village’s men.

She will tell no one of the white-eyed beasts that follow her. Or the faceless gray women tall as houses. Or the girls she saw kissing in the elm grove.

Today she will be a saint of Haven. She will rid her family of her mother’s shame at last and save her people from destruction. She is not afraid. Are you?

Short and Sweet Review

In the village of Haven men are dying and our main character knows that when she becomes one of the four saints that she can stop the evil that has invaded Haven. She has seen beast and faceless women but she will tell no one because she will be the one to save her people.

This book was something. Something interesting, strange, different. Some of these things were good and others just had me wondering what was going on. The book starts off with our main character who won’t go by her name because it’s the name her mother went by and her mother brought shame upon their family. Anyway once she becomes a saint she goes by the name Amity. Unfortunately for Amity and the Village men are still being killed and the village thinks it’s because they made Amity a saint after everything her mother did. The other Saints, Mercy and Temperance invite Amity with them to a place called Avazel where Amity meets a coven of witches who use a power called Extasia. Their leader Malice admits that her and the coven have been killing the men in Haven basically to meet the devil. Amity decides that she’s going to find relics and meet the devil first to stop the evil taking place in Haven.

Extasia was nothing that I was expecting at all. There were a lot of religious tones. The men in the village had elders they looked to God and it was such an old way of thinking but they would find it acceptable to beat on the saints. The saints and other girls in the village dealt with a lot of abuse they shouldn’t have, but they followed the way of thinking. Amity who in the end becomes rage (lots of name changes) uses Extasia and has to keep it a secret because she knows what will happen if she’s found out and she still has a mission to complete. I liked watching Amity try to find the relics and slowly go from obedient to realizing that things in Haven aren’t as great as she once thought. Amity definitely had a lot of character development from the beginning to the end, she was stronger and much more sure of herself and willing to see change. I did like the sisterhood between the saints and how they realized that they were the ones who could save Haven. The romance we see a sliver of it so I’m not sure why it was made to be one of the big selling points for this book. I would say there’s maybe 3 to 5 scenes with the love interest and just one big one. The ending reminded me of books like Divergent or the Maze Runner and basically felt out of place.

There were things I liked about this book and other things that just confused me or made me want to put this book down. Overall it was different and not what I was expecting.

Bears aren’t the only predators in these woods.
Best friends Neena and Josie spent high school as outsiders, but at least they had each other. Now, with college and a two-thousand-mile separation looming on the horizon, they have one last chance to be together—a three-day hike deep into the woods of the Pisgah National Forest.

Simmering tensions lead to a detour off the trail and straight into a waking nightmare … and then into something far worse. Something that will test them in horrifying ways.

Short and Sweet Review

Neela and Josie are best friends and before going off to college they decide to go on a camping trip. The only thing they need to worry about is bears and navigating the woods and making it back home. Unfortunately there’s more to worry about in the woods than just bears.

Where to start, where to start? Neela and Josie are supposedly best friends but once they start their hiking we see them throw jabs and say things that are hurtful to each other. I don’t know if it was the stress or if they’ve just been holding back and things were finally let loose. Neela was a selfish character and basically only cared about herself. Josie was bossy and overbearing. Once these two clashed the only thing that brought them back together was the fact that Josie got hurt. During the time Josie got hurt we see both POVs as Neela leaves to go get help. The things that happened just seemed unrealistic, I feel like Josie could have survived one thing but the rest of the things that happened should have just taken her out. The perpetrators had no real motive and it was just a waste, I would have rather seen the girls run from a bear. The ending again seemed like something that could happen but the fact that it happened to that certain character the probabilities of it seem 50/50.

I’m glad this book was short because the first 100 or so pages was the girls just arguing, and whining. I didn’t like either character and I don’t feel like there was suspense or at least enough to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Summer 1958. A gruesome killer plagues the Midwest, leaving behind a trail of bodies completely drained of blood.

Michael Jensen, an aspiring journalist whose father happens to be the town sheriff, never imagined that the Bloodless Murders would come to his backyard. Not until the night the Carlson family was found murdered in their home. Marie Catherine Hale, a diminutive fifteen-year-old, was discovered at the scene—covered in blood. She is the sole suspect in custody.

Michael didn’t think that he would be part of the investigation, but he is pulled in when Marie decides that he is the only one she will confess to. As Marie recounts her version of the story, it falls to Michael to find the truth: What really happened the night that the Carlsons were killed? And how did one girl wind up in the middle of all these bodies?

Short and Sweet Review

It’s the summer of 1958 and a killer is leaving a trail of bodies along the midwest, and these bodies are drained of blood. Michael Jensen wants to be a journalist and his father is the sheriff in town. Michael never thought that the “Bloodless Murders” would come to his small town. But when the Carlson family is murdered and Marie Catherine Hale is at the scene of the crime drenched in blood, Michael is dragged into the investigation. Marie decides that if she’s going to tell her story the only person she’s going to tell it to is Michael.

The book starts off with a thrill we see Marie covered in the victims blood but claiming that she didn’t commit the killings but she also won’t give up who she was with or tell her story so she just looks guilty. Marie will only tell her story to Michael which surprise everyone but obviously he has to do it because its everyones chance to get answers. We see a sort of friendship develop between Michael and Marie which is kind of understandable because they’re the same age but at the same time she could possibly be a serial killer. Anyway Marie is an unreliable story teller and we can see how she weaves a story and how paranoid Michael becomes. This is one of those books that keeps you reading because you want to know what happened and Marie will keep you guessing till the very end because she doesn’t really want to tell her story, it’s almost like she’s buying time.

All These Bodies will keep you engaged until the very end. I will say that I’m still not sure about that ending and even though I finished the book a few days ago I’m still thinking about it.
