Divided by their order. United by their vengeance.

Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom—and vengeance.

Jazmyne is the Queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.

Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain—except the lengths they will go to win this game.

Jazmyne is the Queen’s daughter and she’s tired of the way her mother runs things, which is why she has aligned herself with a group willing to kill her mother so that Jazmyne can take the throne. Iraya has been living in a cell and spends her days thinking about how she’s going to exact revenge on the Queen who killed her family to ascend the throne.

We get both of the girl’s POVs and I personally thought Iraya was a stronger character. Even though both girls wanted the Queen out of the picture Iraya was willing to do anything while we see that Jazmyne would sometimes hesitate. I will say that Jazmyne would be the more logical one while Iraya was rash in her decision making.

The world building felt incomplete and sometimes didn’t make sense to me. I will say the pacing of the book was slow. It was hard to get through this book because I felt that there wasn’t a lot happening and sometimes the POVs sounded alike and it just wasn’t working for me. The synopsis mentions that the two main characters team up but they butt heads on everything and don’t really talk about working together until halfway through the book. I also didn’t feel like there were a lot of witch elements in the book.

Overall I’m not sure if I would pick up the second book. I was looking forward to reading Witches Steeped in Gold and unfortunately it was a let down.

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off-script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

Short and Sweet Review

Kate and Anderson have been friends for a long time! Though they may seem codependent, they’re not, even though they actually do almost everything together. So when their crush from summer camp, Matt ends up going to their school they decide that this can be a communal crush. But Kate and Anderson soon learn that communal crushes aren’t fun when actual feelings become involved.

As soon as the book starts we see the friendship between Kate and Anderson, they really consult each other on everything. They also have two other friends Brandie and Raina that are in their group. Once they realize Matt is going to their school they decide that this can be a communal crush and this is where the trouble begins. So everyone that is important in this book is in the play so theirs lots of rehearsals. Matt and Anderson have a class together, and Kate sees Matt during rehearsals and also at her house. Even though Anderson and Kate promised that they would be happy for each other when it comes to stuff happening with Matt we can see that each of them begin to get jealous of each other. I will say that’s the only thing that bothered me, they would be okay and promise not to get mad but then a few chapters later one of them would get jealous and it became a cycle. I think my favorite part of this book was Noah. Noah and Kate used to be friends but now he’s more so her brothers friend. But now Noah is in the school play so there’s lots of him to go around. I honestly preferred Noah and Kate he just had so much to offer and he was sweet and really trying to make an effort. There’s nothing wrong with Matt but there wasn’t much chemistry but with Noah and Kate it’s flying off the page.

This was a pretty good I liked the friendships and the family relationships. Also the romantic relationships and how those all came about. I really loved reading about the play rehearsals and how most of the drama took place there. Thinking back I like this book a lot more than I thought I did despite the drama ring around. Definitely pick this book up!

When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.

Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.

Short and Sweet

Lizzie Bennet wants to be a lawyer at her fathers firm, so when a murder takes place in London’s high society Lizzie knows this is her chance to prove herself. The only thing that’s standing in her way is Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a solicitor that works for a firm that rivals her fathers. Lizzie is convinced that the wrong person is being blamed for murder and she’s determined to find the actual culprit.

Characters

Lizzie: Lizzie prefers to spend her time at her fathers firm than with her mother and her sister doing social calls. Lizzie was a good main character. I just loved her! Lizzie wasn’t perfect but it was easy to relate to her. In the time that this book takes place in women aren’t seen in the law and order scene. But Lizzie is good at what she does on the down low she looks into some cases for her dad, and she just wants to prove herself and eventually get a position at their firm, Longbourn and Sons. Lizzie is determined, smart, and good at putting the pieces together.

Darcy: Darcy works for his father at their prestigious firm Pemberley Associates. Darcy is a solicitor and was formally hired by the accused. Darcy is determined to prove his clients innocence and he thinks that Lizzie is just getting in his way. Darcy comes off as cold but he takes his job seriously and is also trying to prove that he’s good at his job.

Romance

Lizzie and Darcy: There’s some tension her mainly because Darcy was actually hired and Lizzie is kind of consulting, but Darcy feels like he doesn’t need Lizzie interfering with the case. I liked these two they had good banter between them and when they actually put their heads together they made a good team. Perhaps a great crime solving duo in the future?

Lizzie and Wickham: I’m not really sure if I saw a relationship between these two looking back. I think maybe they were better as friends but there was some flirtation going on. Wickham is a runner that Lizzie meets after she gets caught for “breaking and entering” but is it really breaking and entering when someone lets you in? Anyway after that encounter Wickham and Lizzie follow some leads together and they get along great.

Lizzie and Collins: Collins works at Longbourn and Sons, and is expected to get the firm if and when Mr. Bennet dies. Lizzie absolutely despises Collins. Collins thinks that he’s better than everyone and honestly he’s not that great at his job. Collins is also expected to propose to Lizzie but Lizzie can’t stand the thought of being married to him.

My Thoughts

Lizzie wants to be a solicitor at her father’s firm so when he asks her to prove herself she decides to take on a murder case. Mr. Charles Bingley is accused of killing his brother in law, but he maintains his innocence. Lizzie decides to offer her expertise, but is stopped short when she finds out that Bingley is to be represented by Mr. Darcy. But Bingley likes Lizzie so much that he accepts her help also. Lizzie realizes that solving this case would give her the chance to be hired by her father and maybe inherit Longbourn and Sons. Lizzie had more of an investigative way of going about things while Darcy thought that Mr. Bingley’s good reputation would save him. I loved following Lizzie around London and seeing how she would follow leads. I also liked how she was friends with Fred, someone who would get information for her. While Lizzie is out and about she’s avoiding her mother and sisters while they go on social calls. Lizzie’s mother is trying to marry her and her sisters off but Lizzie can think of better ways to spend her time. Lizzie did a great job following her gut and piecing things together, though some of her leads did get her into some trouble. I loved Lizzies relationships with her sister Jane, her father, and her friend Charlotte. This was a good mystery I wasn’t sure who the murderer actually was. The ending was great and just leaves you wanting more!

Overall

This was a book I could not put down! I found the characters funny, there was a great plot, and I honestly did not mind following Lizzie around. Lizzie is such a determined character but she also has her faults, its hard not to root for her! The ending just made me want more and I can’t wait to see what Lizzie’s next adventure has in store!

Ada’s life is a mess. She just caught her boyfriend cheating on her after a humiliating attempt at losing her virginity, and she’s had it up to here with her gorgeous older sister’s unsolicited advice.

But things really hit the fan during a family vacation in Hawaii, where Ada discovers her own mother is having an affair. Apparently, everyone is falling into bed with people they shouldn’t. Everyone except Ada. But when Ada decides she’s going to stop trying and start doing—sex, that is—her best laid plan overlooks an inconvenient truth:

Feelings, romantic or not, always get in the way.

Short and Sweet Review

Ada’s a sixteen year old and in her mind her life is a mess. She was about to go all the way with her boyfriend but changed her mind and then regretted changing her mind so she decides to surprise him. While going to surprise him Ada finds him with another girl. On the bright side her family is going to Hawaii for her mother’s work conference. But what should be a fun time turns into a nightmare when Ada finds her mom having an affair. Now Ada thinks that she should just forget her plans and go with the flow.

So the book starts off with Ada and her boyfriend Leo about to have sex, but Ada realizes that she’s not ready and Leo was understanding. After getting some advice from her older sister, Afton, Ada decides she’s ready to try again but she ends up finding Leo inviting another girl to his house. Ada doesn’t have too much time to dwell on it because she finds out her family is going to Hawaii, actually it’s just her mom, and her sisters Afton and Abby while her stepdad stays behind. Afton and Ada had a fight so they have some awful tension throughout the whole trip (but we’ll get into that later). The rest of the book consists of fun activities that Ada does while on the trip, dinners with her moms colleagues, Ada finding a rebound, and Ada trying to figure out how her mother could be having an affair.

I felt for Ada because she loves her family so finding out her mother is having an affair was like a shot to the heart. But that’s the only time I felt for Ada because over the course of the book I realized that Ada is not a likable character she lashed out, she’s dramatic, and she was always doing the most. Afton and Ada fighting throughout the whole book didn’t make things any better, at one point they would forgive each other and then the next they were fighting again. I honestly found it ridiculous and would roll my eyes every time they would have an interaction.

As for the romance aspect I don’t think there was much. During the trip Ada hangs out with Nick and decides that he’s the one she wants to have sex with, it was out of nowhere and I don’t think she knew what she actually wanted. Nick and Ada were better off being friends.

When I read the synopsis I thought, “Wow this is going to be a good book, and it’ll be deep and heartwarming.” I felt none of that while reading this book. It was just too much fighting between everyone, a main character I couldn’t relate to or stand, and a main character who was obsessed with trying to lose her virginity that she decides she’s going to bang a cute guy that she sees at the conference. I liked Abby and Pops but other than that there is nothing that is special about this book.

The last place you'd expect to find a team of criminals is at a prestigious Philadelphia prep school. But on a class trip to the U.S. Mint - which prints a million new coins every 30 minutes - an overlooked security flaw becomes far too tempting for a small group of students to ignore.
United by dire circumstances, these unlikely allies - the nerd, the slacker, the athlete, and the perfect student - band together to attempt the impossible: rob the U.S. Mint. This diverse crew is forced to confront their true beliefs about each other and themselves as they do the wrong thing for the right reasons.

Short and Sweet Review

Alice, Jason, Dakota, and Benny all go to the same prestigious prep school in Philadelphia, but none of them are really friends. After a trip to the mint Jason thinks it’s a good hypothetical idea to rob the mint, and he goes over this idea with Alice since she brought up how easy it would be to hack the mint. Over a few days Benny and Dakota are added to the group and now we have a group of students who are about to pull off a heist.

This isn’t the best group mainly because they’re not friends and some of them don’t like each other, there’s a lot of tension and snarky remarks. Each person has a reason to go through with the heist but Jason has the biggest reason of all. Jason’s dad was the headmaster but was recently arrested for embezzling money from the school, now the school is going under. So Jason is trying to fix his dads mistakes.

We get the POVs of all four characters and there wasn’t one I liked more than the other they were all pretty mundane. I liked seeing them plan out how they were going to pull of their heist. The ending was okay it wasn’t anything great. Overall this book was okay, it had a heist, and some characters who live vastly different lives who have to get along to pull off a job.

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her "glamour" to gain power. But who is Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story―a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Short and Sweet Review

I love the Lunar Chronicles so of course I wasn’t going to miss out on getting Fairest a story all about Queen Levana! It explained everything that happened before Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress came into her life. This book was crazy but it was good. Just learning about Levana was eye opening! The struggles she went through when she was younger helped explain her motives. We experience her childhood, teenage years, and some part of her adult life. I did feel bad for some of the things Levana experienced in life it seemed like things just wouldn’t get easier for her. I really liked reading from her point of view it really explains her motives in the other books. I loved this book and would recommend the whole Lunar Chronicles series to everyone.

MOXIE GIRLS FIGHT BACK!

Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with an administration at her high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes, hallway harassment, and gross comments from guys during class. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules.

Viv's mom was a tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Grrrl in the '90s, and now Viv takes a page from her mother's past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She's just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. As Viv forges friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.

Moxie is a book about high school life that will make you wanna riot!

Short and Sweet Review

Vivian Carter is a normal high school junior. She hang’s out with her friends, goes to the football games, and see’s her grandparents almost daily. But when a new girl in class tries to answer a question and a boy replies with a sexist remark Vivian realizes she’s fed up. She’s fed up with the administration doing nothing, the boys getting away with everything, the harassment, and the sexist dress code. Vivian decides to make Moxie, a feminist zine that she leaves in the girls bathrooms anonymously. Vivian didn’t think that Moxie would mean anything, but when other girls start to reply she starts to realize how important Moxie is.

I loved Vivian, she was grounded, passionate, and realistic about what she wanted. Vivian’s mom was a Riot Grrrl in the 90s and that leads to some of Vivians inspiration to start Moxie. I love how Vivian left Moxie anonymous and there wasn’t a leader, I felt like that aspect made it easier for other girls to contribute which I loved!

Vivian becomes friends with Lucy after the mishap in class. Lucy is a pretty strong feminist and she loved Moxie and how it was sticking it the the man. We also see that Claudia, Vivians best friend didn’t really understand the idea of Moxie but eventually comes around. Vivian also begins a relationship with Seth. I did like Seth he was all for the cause but sometimes he did have to be educated on why certain things weren’t okay.

I don’t go to East Rockport High School, but I was tired of the boys and the sexist things that they got away with and the administrations lack of discipline. I loved seeing more girls band together to fight for what was right! Vivian got different perspectives from girls at her school and I just think it inspired her more.

I loved this book! It was fast paced and it was great seeing how Moxie started off small but ended up with most of the girls in the school joining the movement! This book has an important take on feminism and should definitely be read!

Aubrey Cash learned the hard way not to rely on love. After all, Webster Casey, the new boy next door she''d been falling for all summer, stood her up at homecoming in front of everyone with no explanation. Proving her theory that love never lasts seems easy when she''s faced with parents whose marriage is falling apart and a best friend who thinks every boy she dates is "the one." But when sparks fly with a boy who turns out to be Webster''s cousin, and then Webster himself becomes her lab partner for the rest of senior year, Aubrey finds her theory—and her commitment to stay single—put to the test.

As she navigates the breakdown of her family, the consequences her cynicism has on her relationship with her best friend, and her own confusing but undeniable feelings for Webster, Aubrey has to ask herself: What really happened the night Webster stood her up? And if there are five ways to fall out of love…could there perhaps be even more ways to fall back in?

Short and Sweet

Aubrey doesn’t rely on love and she learned that the hard way after being stood up by Webster Casey on homecoming night. Aubrey’s parents have a marriage that is falling apart and Aubrey uses that as proof that love doesn’t last but things change after she meets Holland, who also ends up being Webster’s cousin, and now Aubrey’s stuck being Webster’s lab partner for the rest of the school year. Aubrey’s determined to stay single but will she last?

Characters

Aubrey: Aubrey is our main character and has become accustomed to her parents fighting which makes her wonder if love is even worth it. Aubrey focuses on making it through the rest of her senior year and avoiding anything to do with love.

Webster: Webster lives across the street from Aubrey. When he first moved in they spent a lot of time together and they were supposed to go to the homecoming dance together but he stood her up.

Holland: Holland is Webster’s cousin and he meets Aubrey at a party. Holland and Aubrey start going out.

Romance

Aubrey and Webster: Aubrey and Webster haven’t really talked since that night at homecoming so now that they’re lab partners its weird and there’s definitely some tension. I’m not really sure if I liked them together they were either okay or mad at each other and it was just back and forth.

Aubrey and Holland: I liked this relationship more than the one above but for some reason even though Holland treats Aubrey great she can’t stop thinking about Webster so that was the end of this duo.

My Thoughts

Aubrey has sworn off love especially since she got stood up at homecoming. I thought it would be a bigger mystery as to why Webster stood Aubrey up but we get the answer 40% of the way through the book, honestly everything that happened at homecoming could have been avoided if Webster just talked to Aubrey. I didn’t really like any of the characters, I didn’t connect with any of them. Aubrey was probably my least favorite, she was always such a pessimistic person. Aubrey’s best friend, Reese is always there for her but Aubrey for some reason thought it was a good idea to try to calculate how long it would take for Reese and her boyfriend to break up. It was things like that that made me dislike Aubrey. Aubrey just wouldn’t let herself be happy with Holland even though he was a great guy, she just kept thinking about Webster. I didn’t really like how the book ended and thought in general the whole thing could have been better.

Overall

I thought I would enjoy this book, because the synopsis sounded promising and in the end it just fell flat. I didn’t like the characters, the romance wasn’t good and its just not what I thought it would be.

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he's pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he's never met.

Short and Sweet Review

Simon isn’t out yet but he finds happiness sending emails back and forth with someone from school who is calling themselves Blue. But when a classmate, Martin, sees those emails he decides to blackmail Simon into becoming his wingman. Now Simon has to navigate being blackmailed and making sure his secret isn’t out before he’s ready.

Simon is obviously our main character, and he lives a pretty normal life, he’s in the school musical, has a good group of friends, but no one knows that he’s gay. Simon finds comfort emailing Blue someone who also isn’t out yet. Here’s where things get a little messy, after using the school computer Simon forgets to log out and his classmate Martin sees the emails between him and Blue and decides to use that against Simon. Now Simon has to try to help Martin get with his friend Abby. I thought Martin was the worst character and I was furious about what he did. Although Simon was put in a tough situation he tried to make decisions that he thought were right which in the end he learned weren’t. I really liked Simon’s friends and how supportive they were, I especially liked the emails between Simon and Blue! Simon learns to be comfortable with who he is and eventually meets Blue!

I thought this was a really cute book, it was a fast read and had an important message. I did cry a few times but I also laughed! Definitely read this book, the movie isn’t bad either!

Sometimes the past is better off buried.

Senior year is finally over. After all they've been through, Dan, Abby, and Jordan are excited to take one last road trip together, and they're just not going to think about what will happen when the summer ends. But on their way to visit Jordan's uncle in New Orleans, the three friends notice that they're being followed . . . and photographed. Then Dan starts receiving messages from someone he didn't expect to hear from again—someone who died last Halloween.

When the trio arrives in New Orleans and the strange occurrences only escalate, Dan is forced to accept that everything that has happened to him in the past year may not be a coincidence, but fate—a fate that ties Dan to a group called the Bone Artists, who have a sinister fascination with notorious killers of the past.

Now Dan's only hope is that he will make it out of his senior trip alive.

Short and Sweet Review

Senior year is over and Dan, Abby, and Jordan reconnect to go on a road trip before starting their first year in college. The group is on their way to New Orleans to visit Jordan’s uncle, but along the way they make a few stops and notice that someone is following them and taking pictures. Things only get worse in New Orleans when a group called the Bone Artists seem to have a connection to Brookline.

This is the last installment in this trilogy. I will admit that this wasn’t my favorite book. The first 25% where they kept stopping so that Abby could take pictures for her project was slow. Dan is getting messages from Micah that are sort of like a warning and one of those texts clues Dan in to the fact that the group is being followed. We also get more information about Dan’s birth parents which I liked. The group meets Oliver and Sabrina, Oliver was a friend of Micah’s and he’s also been getting text. Oliver thinks that Dan can help him repay his debt to the Bone Artists. Jordan and Abby don’t trust Oliver and Sabrina and they were really rude to them and spent most of the book being mad at Dan and blaming him for the things that were happening. Abby and Dan are still dating, but I don’t understand why because there doesn’t seem to be any chemistry between them. The ending was good but it also felt a little rushed.

Overall this was a good book but I think the first two books are the best. The plot is good and I liked the mystery surrounding Dan’s parents and how the Bone Artists had a connection to things that went on at Brookline.
