Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. There’s only one problem: His conservative parents won’t accept that he’s transgender. And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won’t transition.

August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends.

But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?

Short and Sweet Review

*Trigger Warning: Dead naming, Misgendering, Suicidal thoughts

August is a transgender teenager who has just run away from his conservative parents home to stay in New York City with his more accepting aunt. August was accepted into the School of Performing arts and the only way he can stay is to promise his parents that he won’t transition.

August is our main character and I loved him. I also felt bad for him because he wasn’t able to be who he wanted to be. Whenever his parents called he had to act like a girl and at his new school he would play the cool guy.

August is in a new setting and he feels like he needs to play a role. I felt bad for August his parents weren’t supportive and they would keep referring to him as a she and using his dead name. I loved that August had his aunt who was supportive and welcomed him with open arms. August has a passion for acting so getting a spot in the School of Performing Arts was the best thing to happen for him. August met so many supportive people at school but he also had a problem because he put on the role of cool guy and some people saw through it and wanted the real August. We also see a lot of talk about transgender representation in broadway and August gets a starring role. The ending was great I love how August had a group of supportive people who loved him surrounding him during a time when he wasn’t sure of himself.

Act Cool was a an amazing book. August was a character that you felt for and wanted to be friends with!

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists...until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. Then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her.

After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

Short and Sweet Review

Before: Serena has had a crush on Sawyer for a long time, and once they do get into a relationship it’s complicated and messy. Eventually Sawyer leaves Florida without telling Reena, and he doesn’t know she’s pregnant.

After: Almost three years later Sawyer comes back, but Serena has been just fine without him. Now Serena has to figure out if she wants Sawyer back in her and Hannah’s lives.

How To Love alternates between the past and the present. We see what Serena’s life was like when she and Sawyer get together and the present shows us how Serena has been living life without Sawyer in her life and her parenting a toddler. I found Serena to be obnoxious, she just had awful judgement and the way she would talk to people was so rude and uncalled for. Sawyer in the past was carefree and didn’t care much about things and now that he’s back he’s trying to make an effort. The romance was toxic, Serena and Sawyer fought a lot, and it’s like who would want a relationship like this? I would say most scenes with Serena and Sawyer would end in an argument. It wasn’t cute and it wasn’t a relationship people should want. The book was boring and there was a side story of how Serena’s friend Allie died, Allie was dating Sawyer before Serena.

This is not a book I would read again and at the moment I can’t think of anything redeeming.

Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed this.

A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts.

Until now.

This time it's not an app, though—it's a game.

Truth or Dare.

Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark.

Then comes Maeve and she should know better—always choose the dare.

But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't count on the police for help. Or protection.

Simon's gone, but someone's determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And this time, there's a whole new set of rules.

Short and Sweet Review

After Simon’s death you would think things at Bayview would be okay, but a lot of copycat apps have popped up since then. Now someone has made a game, Truth or Dare. Phoebe, Knox, and Maeve are sent texts to play and so are a few of their classmates, and it’s always easier to choose dare, because the consequences of not playing is one of your secrets being revealed. Simon may be gone but someone wants to keep his legacy alive.

Phoebe is the first one targeted and unfortunately she chooses not to answer and one of her secrets is revealed to the entire school. I felt bad for Phoebe the amount of crap she got for it was awful. Phoebe’s home life is okay, things haven’t been the same since her father died and now it’s just Phoebe, her brother, sister, and mom. Things get tense between Phoebe and her sister Emma, and we can see the dynamic between the two is just awkward and you wouldn’t want to be in a room with them.

Maeve also choses not to reply and one of her secrets leak but it also affects her friend Knox. I really liked Maeve we saw her in the last book and I’m glad we got more of her. She’s a computer genius and I like how determined she was to find out who could be behind Truth or Dare. Maeve is also dealing with the possibility that her Leukemia might be back and she’s been keeping it a secret because she doesn’t want to go through all the treatments again. Maeve also has a little romance with Luis and I just thought it was so cute, I loved those two together.

Knox isn’t asked a Truth or Dare question but we do see that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Knox and Maeve are best friends but we see a little bit of a fallout after Maeve’s secret is revealed, but they do reconcile after they realize that their friendship is more important. Knox’s father also owns a construction company and that plays a big role in the book.

Someone at Bayview just made a new game with new rules. This is Truth or Dare to a new level. Phoebe is texted first but after not replying her secret is revealed and now people know this is the real deal. After what happened to Phoebe other students start to pick dare. Maeve is asked but she chooses not to reply and after her secret is revealed she tries to ignore the repercussions. One of the students decide to take the dare and that’s when things get ugly, he dies and that’s the same time Knox was in the wrong place. Knox, Phoebe, and Maeve know this is serious so they invest more time trying to figure out who could be behind Truth or Dare, by doing stakeouts, following people, and hacking computers. I did like that we saw characters from the last book, there was a lot of them because Addy’s sister was getting married so that was a subplot. I loved the ending I wasn’t sure who could have done it but once everything started getting revealed, I figured out who did it and what their motive was.

This book held my attention from the first page to the last. I love mysteries and One of Us is Next is better then One of Us is Lying. I just love how the stakes were raised and how Phoebe, Knox, and Maeve worked together. This book was hard to put down and it just makes me want to read another book by Karen M. McManus!

Valora Luck has two things: a ticket for the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, and a dream of leaving England behind and making a life for herself as a circus performer in New York. Much to her surprise though, she's turned away at the gangway; apparently, Chinese aren't allowed into America.

But Val has to get on that ship. Her twin brother Jamie, who has spent two long years at sea, is there, as is an influential circus owner, whom Val hopes to audition for. Thankfully, there's not much a trained acrobat like Val can't overcome when she puts her mind to it.

As a stowaway, Val should keep her head down and stay out of sight. But the clock is ticking and she has just seven days as the ship makes its way across the Atlantic to find Jamie, perform for the circus owner, and convince him to help get them both into America.

Then one night the unthinkable happens, and suddenly Val's dreams of a new life are crushed under the weight of the only thing that matters: survival.

Short and Sweet Review

The year is 1912 and Valora Luck has quit her job and is planning on smuggling her way onto the Titanic to find her brother and make a better life for them in America. A part owner of the Ringling Brothers Circus is on board and Valora wants to convince him to allow her and Jamie to become acrobats in the circus. Valora can only keep her ruse so long and she’s not even sure if Jamie wants the life she’s proposing. One night the unsinkable ship is dealt a fatal blow.

Luck of the Titanic starts off with us meeting Valora. She’s determined to get on the ship and reunite with her brother, they only have each other now that both of their parents are dead. Valora doesn’t really have a way on the ship since it was her employer who was the one who had the ticket. So now Valora smuggles her way on the ship, and is pretending to be her dead employer Mrs. Sloane and makes her way to first class. Valora finds her brother in third class with other Chinese laborers. While Valora thinks that her and Jamie should move to America and become acrobats in the circus Jamie is more reluctant and clearly shows he doesn’t like the idea.

This book was okay but not much happened. Valora goes between first and third class and tries not to get caught by the staff. Valora also spends a lot of time trying to convince Jamie to join the circus. There’s a subplot where an aspiring fashion designer, April Hart, wants Valora to wear her designs around the titanic. Anyway that’s all that happened in the book there was a romance, kind of, nothing really happened. I like how Valora was determined at first I felt sorry for her but then she became annoying. It’s like she couldn’t imagine that Jamie might not want the same thing she does. She would not leave Jamie alone even though he’s fine with the life he has now and the new friends he made, it’s almost like she couldn’t wrap her head around that and it was her way or the highway.

Everyone knows what happened on the Titanic and we also see that in the book but the ending was… it was something and I don’t have the right word for it. When the book ended I was relieved, the pacing was slow and when nothing’s happening it just makes for a boring time.

As the illegitimate daughter of Harry Houdini—or so her mother claims—gifted illusionist Anna Van Housen easily navigates the underground world of magicians and mediums in 1920s New York, though the real trick is keeping her true gifts secret from her opportunistic mother. But as Anna's powers intensify, she experiences frightening visions that lead her to explore the powers she's tried so long to hide.

Short and Sweet Review

It’s the 1920’s and Anna Van Housen is an illusionist but she’s more than that and when she’s discovered by a young man who realizes that she has more abilities Anna is introduced to members of a secret society in hopes to learn more about herself.

Anna Van Housen is an illusionist she has the ability to communicate with the dead, feel peoples emotions, and see the future, but around her mother she keeps these abilities under wraps. Marguerite Van Housen is the star of the show but she also doesn’t have any abilities of her own, but if it seems like Anna is in the spotlight Marguerite is not a happy woman, Marguerite will even go as far as to try to embarrass Anna in front of an audience at one of their shows just to let her know who’s boss.

Anna meets Cole and he seems to know about her abilities. Cole introduces Anna to a group of people who are members of a secret society. The members of the society are eager to help Anna learn more about her abilities and herself. Honestly I don’t feel like much happened in this book. I lost interest in it 30% through. It was a lot of Anna trying to find out more about her abilities and making sure she and her mother were safe. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters and the ending wasn’t something to talk about it was kind of abrupt. I will read the sequel just to see what happens but Born of Illusion was a book that had potential but just fell short of my expectations.

For as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember, the village of Oakvale has been surrounded by the dark wood—a forest filled with terrible monsters. A forest that light itself cannot penetrate.

Unlike her fellow villagers, Adele cannot avoid the dark wood.

Adele is one of a long line of guardians: women who secretly take on the form of a wolf, in order to protect their village.

But when accepting her fate means giving up the boy she loves, abandoning the future she imagined for herself, and breaking her own moral code, she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe.

Short and Sweet Review

Adele lives in the village of Oakvale, Oakvale is surrounded by the dark wood which is filled with monsters. Unlike the other villagers Adele can’t avoid the dark wood, she’s a guardian, she can transform into a wolf to protect the village from the dark wood. When Adele learns everything that comes with being a guardian she isn’t sure this is the life she wants.

Adele just recently turned 16 and when she goes to visit her grandmother in the dark wood she learns that she’s able to transform into a redwulf. Adele passed her trial and now she’s going to learn how to be a guardian and protect her village from the dark wood like her mother and grandmother have done before her. Adele learns that there’s sacrifices she has to make like giving up Grainger a boy she likes because he wouldn’t understand the life she’s going to live, she also learns that she already has someone she’s supposed to marry named Maxime.

There’s a lot of focus on Adele becoming a redwulf, the love triangle, and what could be terrorizing the village. Adele was an okay character I didn’t connect with her or agree with the decisions she made. She often thought she was right and would ask for advice and do the exact opposite. The love triangle was obnoxious, Adele has known Grainger longer so she prefers him, she was so rude to Maxime it was just awful. I’m surprised anyone wanted to be with her.

I liked the retelling aspect it was different from the normal Red Riding Hood we know. The ending was strange, I feel like things could have been avoided if Adele would have just listened but she ended up making a mess out of everything. With the way things ended I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a stand alone or a series.

Welcome to Renaissance France, a place of poison and plots, of beauties and beasts, of mice and . . . queens?

Mary is the queen of Scotland and the jewel of the French court. Except when she’s a mouse. Yes, reader, Mary is an Eðian (shapeshifter) in a kingdom where Verities rule. It’s a secret that could cost her a head—or a tail.

Luckily, Mary has a confidant in her betrothed, Francis. But things at the gilded court take a treacherous turn after the king meets a suspicious end. Thrust onto the throne, Mary and Francis face a viper’s nest of conspiracies, traps, and treason. And if Mary’s secret is revealed, heads are bound to roll.

Short and Sweet Review

We’re in the time of the Renaissance France and Mary Queen of Scots has lived in France since she was a young girl. Mary has always known she was going to marry the Dauphin Francis, but Mary has a secret she’s an Eðian. This gives Mary the ability to change into her spirit animal which is a mouse and she uses this ability to learn things about the other royals living in the castle. Unfortunately there’s a lot of scheming going on and soon Mary and Francis are going to be thrust on the throne and even sooner someone is going to try to get them off.

There’s a lot of characters in this book we have Mary and Francis and we have Mary’s four ladies in waiting also all named Mary so they all go by nick names and we have Ari Nostradamus and Catherine De Medici and King Henry, oh and Mary’s uncles.

Anyway the book started off a little slow which I suppose was to build everything up and things did pick up halfway through the book after King Henry met his end. Catherine De Medici is up to no good and so are Mary’s uncles but they’re not working together so at some point Mary and Francis do end up splitting up and Mary goes to Scotland and Francis is in France dealing with his mother. Ari Nostradamus was an okay character she was hired by Catherine to spy on Mary and I feel like she started the ball rolling with the trouble that came to Mary after her and Francis’s marriage. I guess Ari was useful because she could make potions but some of the things she did were annoying. Mary was an a good character she didn’t want to believe that her uncles would plot against her and Francis felt the same about Catherine.

Overall this was a good book. It definitely got better during the second half when things started to pick up and more of the plots against Mary and Francis were revealed. I’m excited to see what the next installments in the Mary series will bring!

Can you follow your heart when it’s already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte. The Eastoffe family’s affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she’s found.

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch. The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king—but only with Hollis’s help.

Can a girl who’s lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?

Short and Sweet Review

The Betrayed picks up right where The Betrothed left off. Hollis is still dealing with the loss of Silas and her parents but she’s coping and knows that she still has the love and support of Silas’s mom and sister Scarlet. The family is on their way to Isolte and they know that the King has been up to no good but the Eastoffe family needs Hollis’s help to prove it.

Life in Isolte is not easy for Hollis especially when Silas’s cousin Etan is making it very clear how much he dislikes Hollis while everyone else is trying to make her feel welcome. The family is invited to the castle for the King’s sons wedding and the family knows that this is their chance to try to find proof that the king has been killing his people and unseat him from the throne. Over the course of the visit Hollis and Etan become closer I feel like this relationship was rushed considering the fact that Silas just died and that Etan is his cousin but I guess it was okay because she got the family’s blessing. Anyway in the castle there’s a lot of maneuvering and trying to get people to back the family and find proof against the King, we also see Valentina again. At the final battle we learn one shocking thing about what happened at Hollis and Sila’s wedding night and then were suddenly back on our way to Coroa, you following me? Anyway king Jameson is basically slime and when you live by the sword you die by the sword, or something like that.

Overall we get a basic Disney ending a happily ever after if you will so strange to have your rebound man be your dead husbands cousin but do you girl. It was a quick book to get through, Hollis was often lead more by her heart than her brain and I’m sure if this as written differently she would have faced some consequences but nonetheless it was an okay book.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.

Short and Sweet

In 1978, at Camp Wonder Falls four camp counselors were murdered and the case was never solved. In comes Stevie, the new owner invites Stevie to come to the camp to help him with his true crime podcast about the podcast, Stevie agrees to this as long as her friends can come along. Now Stevie is spending her summer with her friends and investigating a decades old murder. In a small town like Barlow Corners people know more than they’re sharing and Stevie is in for more than she bargained for.

Characters

Stevie: Our favorite mystery solver is back! I love Stevie, seeing her thought process is amazing I like seeing how she thinks of different pieces of the case. We see Stevie get stumped a few times but we also see her figure things out she’s like a modern day Nancy Drew.

My Thoughts

In 1978, four teen camp counselors went into the woods at night and didn’t come back out and the case was never solved. Stevie is recruited to come because she just recently solved the Ellingham case. I was so happy that she was able to bring Janelle and Nate, we also see David later on. Anyway we meet the townspeople and a few of the people who were actually at the camp when the murders happened so anyone of them could be the suspects but they all have alibis but the police investigation back then wasn’t so great. Stevie tries to do some interviews but some of the people aren’t happy she’s there so they aren’t really willing to talk and then out of nowhere one of the townsfolk is murdered so the plot thickens! Now Stevie knows for sure someone has something to hide and she’s getting closer to finding out what it is. Stevie being Stevie ended everything in a way only she could and I loved it.

Overall

I really enjoyed this book. The setting was great maybe because its summer right now so the camp vibes were perfect. I was hooked until the very last page trying to figure out what could of happened back in 1978 and I was not disappointed. I’m just so happy that I got to read this book and I would read it again. If you haven’t read this series, do it!

Double double, twins spell trouble…

Hunter and Mercy Goode are twin witches, direct descendants of the founder of their town of Goodeville. As their ancestors have done before them, it is now time for the twins to learn what it means to be Gatekeepers–the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds, ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and nightmares come to life.

When their mother becomes the first victim in a string of murders, the devastated sisters vow to avenge her death. But it will take more than magic to rein in the ancient mythological monsters who’ve infected their peaceful town.

Now Hunter and Mercy must come together and accept their destiny or risk being separated for good.

Short and Sweet Review

Mercy and Hunter Goode are descendants of Sarah Goode their town’s founder and like their ancestors have done before them its time for them to become gate keepers. Gate keepers are the protectors of gates to different underworlds where mythological creatures rule. During a ritual the girl’s mother becomes the first victim in a string of murders that begins to plague their town. The girls vow to avenge their mother, but they also have work together in order for the gates to close again.

The book starts off with Hunter and Mercy celebrating their birthday with their friends and later that night is when they go out to do their ceremony with their mom Abigail. During the ceremony in which the girls are supposed to become gate keepers something goes wrong and Abigail is attacked by a Fenrir that came from one of the gates and is unfortunately killed. The girls realize something is wrong with the gates and with the help of Xena their cat familiar who can conveniently transform into a human try to figure out a way to fix it and fast.

So there were a lot of things I didn’t like about this book starting right after their mother was killed was when things went right off a cliff.

cliff GIF

~ Xena was just weird but I guess if you’re a cat person it’s to be expected. she would groom the girls, call the characters kitten and hiss at people. You would think that for being around people for as long as she has she would know how to act as a human.

~ Mercy and Kirk were a mess and unfortunately I had to read about them. Everyone could tell that Kirk was a piece of trash except for Mercy, her friends warned her, her family warned her, but she just didn’t care. The authors for some reasons thought it would be pertinent to add a sex scene which added nothing to the book. All this scene did was make me cringe, apparently it’s romantic to call your girlfriend a witchy woman (yuck). And you’re probably thinking why are you mentioning this scene in your review? Well lovely reader, for some reason this is like a big moment for Mercy. So big in fact that Kirk goes around and tells everyone and I mean EVERYONE that they had sex but when Mercy finds out she doesn’t believe it because Kirk wouldn’t do such a thing. Anyway our smart main character decides to cast a spell so the entire school can hear just how much Kirk loves her and ends up getting embarrassed when he admits that he was playing her the whole time. This might have actually have been my favorite part because she was so sure of herself that she would disregard what everyone around her was saying, so sorry sis.

~ The writing felt weird, at some points I felt like I could have been reading a middle grade book if there wasn’t a sex scene and stuff. At other times it felt like a young adult but the characters were written for a bad 2000s movie. Do teens really talk like this? I’m going to say no. Especially Mercy! What the hell is up with her dialogue? She talks like she’s from Europe but she’s most definitely not so I don’t know you guys I don’t know, maybe she’s going through an identity crisis.

~ Also Mercy is annoying. Her best friend’s father dies and she doesn’t even give her time to grieve she’s just blowing up her phone like give her some breathing room. Mercy is pushy. Writing this point I feel like both Mercy and Hunter want to be right but when there’s push back from someone all hell breaks loose and they get so mad and stomp off and have a tantrum.

~ Speaking of getting mad more than 60% of this book is Mercy and Hunter being mad at each other. How are things supposed to get done when there’s so much tension between them? When the girls do there spells they’re supposed to think of the intention behind them but I feel like that’s hard to do when you’re thinking about how you’re mad at your sister.

~ Also there’s a prophecy that was written about why the gates are deteriorating, Mercy thinks its because Hunter chose a God and Hunter thinks that Mercy is wrong so Hunter in the end picks a Goddess but things still go to hell and that’s when we’re left with a dramatic cliffhanger and Hunter running off like the angsty teen she is.

So I honestly did not want to finish this book, but I did because I’m dedicated, and how else would I have gotten all the above bullet points? This book, the characters, the plot, the pacing, everything was a hot mess and I would not recommend it at all, save your time and your money!
