Welcome to Renaissance France, a place of poison and plots, of beauties and beasts, of mice and . . . queens?

Mary is the queen of Scotland and the jewel of the French court. Except when she’s a mouse. Yes, reader, Mary is an Eðian (shapeshifter) in a kingdom where Verities rule. It’s a secret that could cost her a head—or a tail.

Luckily, Mary has a confidant in her betrothed, Francis. But things at the gilded court take a treacherous turn after the king meets a suspicious end. Thrust onto the throne, Mary and Francis face a viper’s nest of conspiracies, traps, and treason. And if Mary’s secret is revealed, heads are bound to roll.

Short and Sweet Review

We’re in the time of the Renaissance France and Mary Queen of Scots has lived in France since she was a young girl. Mary has always known she was going to marry the Dauphin Francis, but Mary has a secret she’s an Eðian. This gives Mary the ability to change into her spirit animal which is a mouse and she uses this ability to learn things about the other royals living in the castle. Unfortunately there’s a lot of scheming going on and soon Mary and Francis are going to be thrust on the throne and even sooner someone is going to try to get them off.

There’s a lot of characters in this book we have Mary and Francis and we have Mary’s four ladies in waiting also all named Mary so they all go by nick names and we have Ari Nostradamus and Catherine De Medici and King Henry, oh and Mary’s uncles.

Anyway the book started off a little slow which I suppose was to build everything up and things did pick up halfway through the book after King Henry met his end. Catherine De Medici is up to no good and so are Mary’s uncles but they’re not working together so at some point Mary and Francis do end up splitting up and Mary goes to Scotland and Francis is in France dealing with his mother. Ari Nostradamus was an okay character she was hired by Catherine to spy on Mary and I feel like she started the ball rolling with the trouble that came to Mary after her and Francis’s marriage. I guess Ari was useful because she could make potions but some of the things she did were annoying. Mary was an a good character she didn’t want to believe that her uncles would plot against her and Francis felt the same about Catherine.

Overall this was a good book. It definitely got better during the second half when things started to pick up and more of the plots against Mary and Francis were revealed. I’m excited to see what the next installments in the Mary series will bring!

Can you follow your heart when it’s already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte. The Eastoffe family’s affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she’s found.

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch. The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king—but only with Hollis’s help.

Can a girl who’s lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?

Short and Sweet Review

The Betrayed picks up right where The Betrothed left off. Hollis is still dealing with the loss of Silas and her parents but she’s coping and knows that she still has the love and support of Silas’s mom and sister Scarlet. The family is on their way to Isolte and they know that the King has been up to no good but the Eastoffe family needs Hollis’s help to prove it.

Life in Isolte is not easy for Hollis especially when Silas’s cousin Etan is making it very clear how much he dislikes Hollis while everyone else is trying to make her feel welcome. The family is invited to the castle for the King’s sons wedding and the family knows that this is their chance to try to find proof that the king has been killing his people and unseat him from the throne. Over the course of the visit Hollis and Etan become closer I feel like this relationship was rushed considering the fact that Silas just died and that Etan is his cousin but I guess it was okay because she got the family’s blessing. Anyway in the castle there’s a lot of maneuvering and trying to get people to back the family and find proof against the King, we also see Valentina again. At the final battle we learn one shocking thing about what happened at Hollis and Sila’s wedding night and then were suddenly back on our way to Coroa, you following me? Anyway king Jameson is basically slime and when you live by the sword you die by the sword, or something like that.

Overall we get a basic Disney ending a happily ever after if you will so strange to have your rebound man be your dead husbands cousin but do you girl. It was a quick book to get through, Hollis was often lead more by her heart than her brain and I’m sure if this as written differently she would have faced some consequences but nonetheless it was an okay book.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.

Short and Sweet

In 1978, at Camp Wonder Falls four camp counselors were murdered and the case was never solved. In comes Stevie, the new owner invites Stevie to come to the camp to help him with his true crime podcast about the podcast, Stevie agrees to this as long as her friends can come along. Now Stevie is spending her summer with her friends and investigating a decades old murder. In a small town like Barlow Corners people know more than they’re sharing and Stevie is in for more than she bargained for.

Characters

Stevie: Our favorite mystery solver is back! I love Stevie, seeing her thought process is amazing I like seeing how she thinks of different pieces of the case. We see Stevie get stumped a few times but we also see her figure things out she’s like a modern day Nancy Drew.

My Thoughts

In 1978, four teen camp counselors went into the woods at night and didn’t come back out and the case was never solved. Stevie is recruited to come because she just recently solved the Ellingham case. I was so happy that she was able to bring Janelle and Nate, we also see David later on. Anyway we meet the townspeople and a few of the people who were actually at the camp when the murders happened so anyone of them could be the suspects but they all have alibis but the police investigation back then wasn’t so great. Stevie tries to do some interviews but some of the people aren’t happy she’s there so they aren’t really willing to talk and then out of nowhere one of the townsfolk is murdered so the plot thickens! Now Stevie knows for sure someone has something to hide and she’s getting closer to finding out what it is. Stevie being Stevie ended everything in a way only she could and I loved it.

Overall

I really enjoyed this book. The setting was great maybe because its summer right now so the camp vibes were perfect. I was hooked until the very last page trying to figure out what could of happened back in 1978 and I was not disappointed. I’m just so happy that I got to read this book and I would read it again. If you haven’t read this series, do it!

Double double, twins spell trouble…

Hunter and Mercy Goode are twin witches, direct descendants of the founder of their town of Goodeville. As their ancestors have done before them, it is now time for the twins to learn what it means to be Gatekeepers–the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds, ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and nightmares come to life.

When their mother becomes the first victim in a string of murders, the devastated sisters vow to avenge her death. But it will take more than magic to rein in the ancient mythological monsters who’ve infected their peaceful town.

Now Hunter and Mercy must come together and accept their destiny or risk being separated for good.

Short and Sweet Review

Mercy and Hunter Goode are descendants of Sarah Goode their town’s founder and like their ancestors have done before them its time for them to become gate keepers. Gate keepers are the protectors of gates to different underworlds where mythological creatures rule. During a ritual the girl’s mother becomes the first victim in a string of murders that begins to plague their town. The girls vow to avenge their mother, but they also have work together in order for the gates to close again.

The book starts off with Hunter and Mercy celebrating their birthday with their friends and later that night is when they go out to do their ceremony with their mom Abigail. During the ceremony in which the girls are supposed to become gate keepers something goes wrong and Abigail is attacked by a Fenrir that came from one of the gates and is unfortunately killed. The girls realize something is wrong with the gates and with the help of Xena their cat familiar who can conveniently transform into a human try to figure out a way to fix it and fast.

So there were a lot of things I didn’t like about this book starting right after their mother was killed was when things went right off a cliff.

cliff GIF

~ Xena was just weird but I guess if you’re a cat person it’s to be expected. she would groom the girls, call the characters kitten and hiss at people. You would think that for being around people for as long as she has she would know how to act as a human.

~ Mercy and Kirk were a mess and unfortunately I had to read about them. Everyone could tell that Kirk was a piece of trash except for Mercy, her friends warned her, her family warned her, but she just didn’t care. The authors for some reasons thought it would be pertinent to add a sex scene which added nothing to the book. All this scene did was make me cringe, apparently it’s romantic to call your girlfriend a witchy woman (yuck). And you’re probably thinking why are you mentioning this scene in your review? Well lovely reader, for some reason this is like a big moment for Mercy. So big in fact that Kirk goes around and tells everyone and I mean EVERYONE that they had sex but when Mercy finds out she doesn’t believe it because Kirk wouldn’t do such a thing. Anyway our smart main character decides to cast a spell so the entire school can hear just how much Kirk loves her and ends up getting embarrassed when he admits that he was playing her the whole time. This might have actually have been my favorite part because she was so sure of herself that she would disregard what everyone around her was saying, so sorry sis.

~ The writing felt weird, at some points I felt like I could have been reading a middle grade book if there wasn’t a sex scene and stuff. At other times it felt like a young adult but the characters were written for a bad 2000s movie. Do teens really talk like this? I’m going to say no. Especially Mercy! What the hell is up with her dialogue? She talks like she’s from Europe but she’s most definitely not so I don’t know you guys I don’t know, maybe she’s going through an identity crisis.

~ Also Mercy is annoying. Her best friend’s father dies and she doesn’t even give her time to grieve she’s just blowing up her phone like give her some breathing room. Mercy is pushy. Writing this point I feel like both Mercy and Hunter want to be right but when there’s push back from someone all hell breaks loose and they get so mad and stomp off and have a tantrum.

~ Speaking of getting mad more than 60% of this book is Mercy and Hunter being mad at each other. How are things supposed to get done when there’s so much tension between them? When the girls do there spells they’re supposed to think of the intention behind them but I feel like that’s hard to do when you’re thinking about how you’re mad at your sister.

~ Also there’s a prophecy that was written about why the gates are deteriorating, Mercy thinks its because Hunter chose a God and Hunter thinks that Mercy is wrong so Hunter in the end picks a Goddess but things still go to hell and that’s when we’re left with a dramatic cliffhanger and Hunter running off like the angsty teen she is.

So I honestly did not want to finish this book, but I did because I’m dedicated, and how else would I have gotten all the above bullet points? This book, the characters, the plot, the pacing, everything was a hot mess and I would not recommend it at all, save your time and your money!

Eva has never felt like she belonged . . . not in her own family or with her friends in New York City, and certainly not at a fancy boarding school like Hardwick Preparatory Academy. So, when she is invited to join the Fives, an elite secret society, she jumps at the opportunity to finally be a part of something.

But what if the Fives are about more than just having the best parties and receiving special privileges from the school? What if they are also responsible for keeping some of Hardwick’s biggest secrets buried?

1962:

There is only one reason why Connie would volunteer to be one of the six students to participate in testing Hardwick’s nuclear fallout shelter: Craig Allenby. While the thought of nuclear war sends her into a panic, she can’t pass up the opportunity to spend four days locked in with the school’s golden boy.

However, Connie and the other students quickly discover that there is more to this “test” than they previously thought. As they are forced to follow an escalating series of commands, Connie realizes that one wrong move could have dangerous consequences.

Separated by sixty years, Eva and Connie’s stories become inextricably intertwined as Eva unravels the mystery of how six students went into the fallout shelter all those years ago . . . but only five came out.

Short and Sweet Review

Present day: Eva doesn’t feel like she belongs not with her family or with her friends back at home, so she definitely doesn’t feel like she belongs at Hardwick Preparatory Academy. When Eva has the chance to join a secret society called the Fives she jumps at the chance to finally belong to something, but the Fives are hiding some of the school’s biggest secrets.

Past: It’s 1962 and one of the biggest worries is a possible nuclear war so when Hardwick makes a fallout shelter and gives six students the opportunity to stay in it for four days Connie volunteers. But the only reason Connie volunteers is Craig Allenby the schools golden boy. The fallout shelter isn’t what any of the students expected, it ends up being more of an experiment and six students went in but only five make it out.

Both of our main characters go to Hardwick Preparatory Academy but during different time periods. We see Connie during the 60s and Eva during the present day. Connie is more timid and the thought of a nuclear war freaks her out. Connie only agrees to volunteer to go in the fallout shelter because Craig Allenby is also planning to go and she likes him, problem is he has a girlfriend. While in the fallout shelter we see the students go through scenarios and drills that their teacher who is running the fallout shelter is making them go through. Over the course of the four days we see the students make questionable decisions which one student questions. In the end Connie starts wondering if she made the right decision signing up and how she’s going to make it out.

Eva is more sure of herself than Connie so when she gets an invite to join the Fives she’s all about it. After doing all the initiation stuff and being accepted Eva learns that the fallout shelter is an off limit topic. Eva also meets Erik during track and learns that one of the students who was in the fallout shelter that died was a relative of his and that sets of the mystery. While trying to avoid getting caught by Dean Allenby (yes that Allenby) and the fives, Erik and Eva sneak around and try to find as much information about the fallout shelter and the people in it as they can.

I liked how the two stories intertwined. I got a creepy feeling while reading this book and I loved it! I felt so bad about what happened in the fallout shelter it did seem like an unfortunate accident. The ending was great and I’m happy that everyone seemed to get some kind of closure.

Nothing will stop Madeline Moore from taking over her family’s independent bookstore after college. Nothing, that is—until a chain bookstore called Prologue opens across the street and threatens to shut them down.

Madeline sets out to demolish the competition, but the guy who works over at Prologue seems intent on ruining her life. Not only is he taking her customers, he has the unbelievable audacity to be… extremely cute.

But that doesn’t matter. Jasper is the enemy and he will be destroyed. After all—all’s fair in love and (book) war.

Short and Sweet Review

Madeline wants to take over her family’s bookstore after college, but she learns that her dreams may not come true after a chain bookstore across the street, Prologue opens and threatens to shut them down. Madeline is determined to take them down but Jasper over at Prologue seems to have the same idea by stealing customers and he has the audacity to be cute.

Madeline loves her family’s bookstore Books and Moore so when her aunt Astrid shares the news that bookstore is going to close Madeline feels like her world is falling apart. Madeline starts coming up with ideas to make more money to try to keep the bookstore open. I liked all of Madeline’s fundraising ideas from getting food trucks, pastries, an author to come by, her friend to make a YouTube video, and a go fund me.

We also see that Madeline’s mom comes back in her life and how that relationship affects things. Madeline and her brother Benny were raised by their aunt Astrid and Benny’s dad Sterling so to have their mom come back was an adjustment and there was a lot of tension.

The rivalry and romance between Madeline and Jasper was an interesting one to say the least. The two were in a prank war and would try to take customers from each others stores and at one point we see things go too far. When things go too far that’s when these two decide to get into a sort of relationship? I’m not even sure I should call it a relationship but whatever it was I didn’t really like it. I felt like they didn’t really have chemistry they had more of a hookup vibe going on and they didn’t really spend much time in the romance phase.

This book was okay I was all for saving the bookstore but towards the end of the book I found myself getting annoyed with Madeline. I loved that she wanted to save the bookstore but she just wouldn’t look at things realistically like everyone else would and it was annoying and so were her outbursts. Overall it just fell short of my expectations.

Lucy Clark has had it. After being bullied one too many times, Lucy retaliates. But when the fallout is far worse than she meant it to be, she gets sent to Manhattan to serve as a full-time companion to the eccentric Edith Fox.

Edith is glamorous and mysterious—nothing like Lucy expected. Though Edith’s world of hidden gardens and afternoon teas is beguiling, there’s one other thing about her that makes her unlike anyone Lucy has ever met...she thinks someone is trying to kill her.

And it’s up to Lucy to find out who it is.

Short and Sweet Review

Lucy Clark has had enough of the bullies at her boarding school and after an incident her headmistress decides it’ll be a good idea to send Lucy to New York. There, Lucy will stay with her cousin Nanette and be an assistant to Edith Fox. Once she arrives Lucy finds that Edith isn’t what she expected and that Edith believes that someone is trying to kill her. Now Lucy is trying to stop the weird accidents and find a killer.

Boarding School wasn’t a good experience for Lucy, so when she gets to go to New York its a chance to prove herself. Lucy is staying with her cousin Nanette who is barely around she’s usually off with her boyfriend Cyrus. Lucy’s parents aren’t really around they’re in Hawaii filming a tv show and honestly they aren’t great people. Anyway upon arriving in New York Lucy meets Edith and finds out she’s not a batty old lady but someone is making an attempt on her life. Lucy gets a list of suspects its not too many under 10 and gets help from Mimsy (Edith’s friend), Edith, and Dyna (Lucy’s friend from boarding school).

The mystery is surprisingly more complex than I thought it would be. Lucy had some weird detective strategies. Lucy also has a love interest named Jack and I didn’t like their interactions he was hot and cold sometimes he was nice and other times he wasn’t. I liked the mystery and some of the characters, the setting was great and I loved learning about all the plants and how much time Lucy spent in Mimsy’s garden.

Karina Ahmed has a plan. Keep her head down, get through high school without a fuss, and follow her parents’ rules—even if it means sacrificing her dreams. When her parents go abroad to Bangladesh for four weeks, Karina expects some peace and quiet. Instead, one simple lie unravels everything.

Karina is my girlfriend.

Tutoring the school’s resident bad boy was already crossing a line. Pretending to date him? Out of the question. But Ace Clyde does everything right—he brings her coffee in the mornings, impresses her friends without trying, and even promises to buy her a dozen books (a week) if she goes along with his fake-dating facade. Though Karina agrees, she can’t help but start counting down the days until her parents come back.

T-minus twenty-eight days until everything returns to normal—but what if Karina no longer wants it to?

Short and Sweet Review

Karina’s plan to get through high school is to keep her head down and follow her parent’s rules. But when her parents leave for four weeks Karina expects some peace, but instead she ends up tangled in a lie. Karina starts to tutor the schools resident bad boy, Ace, and eventually the two start to pretend date. Karina can’t wait until things go back to normal but as time starts to get closer to when her parents get back she wonders if she really wants it to go back to normal.

Karina is a 16-year-old Bangladeshi Muslim who loves to read and write poetry. She wants to study English, but her parents want her to study medicine. There isn’t a lot of room in her life for her to live it the way she wants so when her parents go to Bangladesh for a month, leaving Karina and her brother with their grandmother, Dadu, Karina finally feels free.

Karina is asked to tutor a boy in her English class, Ace, who is struggling in. Karina knows that her parents wouldn’t be to happy with her spending any time with a boy, but Karina agrees because her favorite teacher is asking and it’ll replace the grade for a project that counts for a large portion of her grade. The more Karina gets to know Ace the more her feelings for him begin to complicate. Ace starts to introduce Karina as his girlfriend even though they’re not dating, which makes everything start to fall apart.

During the time that her parents are gone Karina is shown love from the people around her, like her friends and Dadu.

The romance was beautiful and I liked that Ace and Karina were honest with each other and respected boundaries. Ace was everything someone would want in a boyfriend and I just loved their relationship.

The book pulls the reader in and I love how the characters were brought to life! Karina has a lot of love and support from those around her. Counting Down with You is beautiful and raw and it really shows you what it means to follow your own path in life. I highly recommend this book!

It's Senior Party Week, that magical in-between time after classes have ended but before graduation, chock-full of gimmicky theme parties, last-minute bonding, and family traditions. Olivia couldn't be more ready. Class salutatorian and confident in her future at LSU, she's poised to sail through to the next phase of her life. But when the tiny hiccup of an unsigned off-campus P.E. form puts Olivia in danger of not graduating at all, she has one week to set things straight without tipping off her very big and very nosy extended family. Volunteering to help at a local golf tournament should do it, but since Olivia's mom equipped her phone with a tracking app, there'll be no hiding the fact that she's at the golf course instead of all the graduation parties happening at the same time. Unless, that is, she can convince the Fab Four--her ride-or-die cousins and best friends Sophie, Charlie, and Wes--to trade phones with her as they go through the motions of playing Olivia for the week. Sure, Olivia's sudden ""passion"" for golf is met with some suspicion. And sure, her grasp of the rules is a little shaky. And yes, okay, a very cute, very off-limits boy keeps popping up in her orbit. But she is focused! She has a schedule and a plan! Nothing can possibly go wrong . . . right?

Short and Sweet Review

It’s Olivia’s senior year and because its almost graduation its a week filled with parties! Olivia is Salutatorian and ready for college except for one problem, she may not graduate because of an off-campus PE class. Now Olivia has to make up the PE credit and try to avoid anyone in her family finding out. With the help of her cousins and best friends, Charlie, Sophie and Wes, they spend the week trading phones, going to parties, and trying their best to avoid getting caught.

I fell in love with this book! Olivia has a big Italian family and its almost time for graduation and its a week of parties that Olivia is unfortunately missing. After finding out that she may not be graduating Olivia feels like her world is falling apart but after finding Coach Cantu and trying to figure out a way to get him to sign her form to graduate, she ends up making a deal with him and becomes his assistant for the golf tournament for the week. Knowing that her mom is keeping tabs on her every move Olivia plans to trade phones with her cousins and sends them to the parties while she works at the golf club. At the golf club Olivia also starts talking to Leo who’s in the tournament but who has also been staying with her aunt and cousins. I liked these two they mainly just talked and got to know each other but the chemistry was there. My favorite part was watching how Sophie, Charlie, and Wes would man the phone, especially when it came to dealing with Olivia’s mom.

This book was funny and heartfelt and I just fell in love with it! At some point I even found myself crying with Olivia. I just felt for her but this was a fun book and I loved following Olivia and the Fab Four and she just has a great family. Pick this book up, it’s just gets you ready for grad season!

Quinn keeps lists of everything—from the days she’s ugly cried, to “Things That I Would Never Admit Out Loud” and all the boys she’d like to kiss. Her lists keep her sane. By writing her fears on paper, she never has to face them in real life. That is, until her journal goes missing . . .

Then an anonymous account posts one of her lists on Instagram for the whole school to see and blackmails her into facing seven of her greatest fears, or else her entire journal will go public. Quinn doesn’t know who to trust. Desperate, she teams up with Carter Bennett—the last known person to have her journal—in a race against time to track down the blackmailer.

Together, they journey through everything Quinn’s been too afraid to face, and along the way, Quinn finds the courage to be honest, to live in the moment, and to fall in love.

Short and Sweet

Quinn has a journal that she writes lists that consists of general things to a list of boys she’d like to kiss. But when her journal is misplaced and an anonymous account is blackmailing her Quinn has no choice but to face her fears and complete the items on her things to do before graduation list otherwise her whole journal could be posted online. Quinn teams up with Carter the last person known to have her journal and together they try to track the blackmailer and help Quinn face some of her fears.

Characters

Quinn: Quinn is our main character and she’s in high school. Quinn is filled with hope and fear and she places most of those in her journal. The journal is basically her life, it’s almost as if she doesn’t know who to be without her journal to guide her. Quinn had a lot of growth over the course of the book she began to face her fears and break out of her comfort zone. I loved seeing her become more comfortable and I appreciated the people she started to surround herself with because they brought out the best in her.

Romance

Quinn and Carter: Quinn has had a crush on Carter since he moved to Austin, but after there first group study session she’s put off. After the whole journal debacle Quinn reluctantly teams up with Carter to find who has her journal. After all the time they spent together we can see that they do care for each other. I like how protective Carter is over Quinn and how much he genuinely cares about her feelings and takes her concerns seriously although sometimes he has to make her think logically.

Quotes

~ “I’m so mad. And when I get this mad, I cry. And if I let it get too far, I ugly cry.”

~ “That’s what the journal’s all about: getting all my feelings out so I never have to talk about them.”

My Thoughts

Quinn’s journal holds everything that’s important to her. Once her journal goes missing she feels like she’s lost a part of herself and understandably she’s freaking out. Quinn teams up with Carter the last person known to have her journal and together they begin to tackle things on Quinn’s list of things to do before graduation. Quinn is fearful but with the help of Carter, Auden, and Olivia she begins to cross things off her list. I love that Quinn made new friends, especially Olivia. Olivia is one of those ride or die friends. We follow Quinn as she figures out who she truly is and realizes she never needed the journal to tell her. I also loved seeing all the lists Quinn would write.

Overall

This book is heartfelt and funny and tackles a lot of issues. In the end I was just so happy with how much Quinn grew and how much she learned to face her fears and have more confidence in herself. This was a book I couldn’t put down I loved the characters and the journey of self discovery!
